Best Chinese team, best CIS team, Best Western EU team, and Best American team in the same group. ehome and lgd have both been better than vg

Even though I'm a Secret fan, with the results they've been showing at past tournaments they'll need the easier group just to get past the group stage lol

While we haven't seen much of either VG or Ehome in 6.86, the Chinese scene is currently:
Ehome > VG > LGD > Newbee. CDEC & CDEC.Youth are somewhere in the region of LGD to Newbee, but we've not seen a lot of CDEC either.
LGD did well in the group stage at Starladder, but a lot of that comes down to a very obvious lack of people preparing for them. (And EG screwing up a rosh fight badly.) LGD is a tier 1 team, but they aren't a Tournament Winning contender here. Not unless rOtk has a few new strategies worked out.

Best Chinese team, best CIS team, Best Western EU team, and Best American team in the same group. Lol, best Western EU team, heard about a former TI champion who just won 2 lans in a row? VG is clearly not the best Chinese team atm and Tspirit is just the usual goblak's stack, so far from being the best CIS team. But at least you spotted the correct American best team.

So Newbee, beating VG 2-1, who beat LGD 2-1, is the worst of the 3?

I don't believe Newbee is that weak with the quality of players they have. Having Chuan might be a motivating factor to play less RPGs too. =/
We are also seeing outdated playstyles from TI3 and before becoming more viable again, so Chinese teams might have a resurgence.

Can somebody fill me in on why Alliance isn't playing in this tournament? Did they fail to qualify?

I would assume invites were decided before the qualifiers, so they are basically based on the Frankfurt major. The only exception is China, but their qualifier was only a few days before the tournament so they had time to take into account LGD's WCA 2nd place for example when deciding to take them over CDEC.

Out of all the ti's Chinese teams had worst performance at ti3. Idk about resurgance due to old playstyles.

wish it would start right now :/

Part of me regrets missing this live, but it's also a chinese event held in a mall. I would be shocked if there weren't delays.

People forget that back in 2013, Alliance and Fly/Notail's team were practice partners and the two used a lot of the same strategies. It's just that Alliance were less emotional and threw less.

I believe with the offlane getting harder and mid stacks getting nerfed, we will see more 4p1 hard carry lineups with 4 space creators (traditional chinese / Navi), or dual core with offlane as carry and mid as tempo controller (Alliance). Alternatively, we might see more farm trickle down to pos 4 to compensate having more tempo cores (Liquid / old C9). Teams need someone other than the supports to set the early game tempo but offlane seems to be getting shut down way too hard sometimes.
The modern mid carry still work as long as it's a hero that doesn't rely on stacks that badly (dp, razor, invoker, etc). But then supports might have to choose whether to protect their mid or offlaner more.
I'm pretty happy supports have more decision making to do this meta though instead of just clustering around mid to protect runes and stacking mid jungles. Making every teams' playstyle viable is the best thing for us spectators.

That would probably explain why I was unaware there was even a qualifier.
I'm a stubborn old man, why do I have to do to a different site...grumble grumble.
