Does it actually just get money pumped into it, or is there still significant third-party support? There is WCS, which is like free ad dollars for Blizzard, who spends millions on marketing anyways. Then there is Proleague and all the EU events like dreamhack. There will be money in SC2 for a bunch of years. The stat of the game is only sad for people who wanted it to be Esports Jesus.

But that's not counting in any production / employee cost. Don't know how much GOMexp (ex GOMTV) and ESL helps out but yeah. Blizzard pays most of that cost. They obviously get some form of return, but nowhere near to it paying off.
There are still a lot of other tournaments like DH, IEM, Pro-league and whatnot though.

I think it is a cheap way for them to market their other games to players with similar interests. The venn diagram for SC2 fans, Diablo and hearthstone likely has a lot of cross over. And I know GOM and ESL do other stuff beyond SC2, so I wouldn't be shocked if WCS is a very tiny part of Blizzard's marketing budget.

People have been blowing the "SC2 DED GAEM" horn literally for years. I still play it and still get inspired to play it upon occasion. It doesn't follow the timesink precedent MMOs or Mobas set, but it's far from a bad game and far from a dead game. When it takes me 5 minutes to find a 3v3 match because there aren't enough players, I'll start believing the negativity.
Until then, I'm with Plansix on the "The state of the game is only sad for people who wanted it to be Esports Jesus.

I still like and follow SC2. Most people who know me knows I am decently close friend to Leenock. So as long as he still plays I will continue to watch.
I just think Blizzards moneypump into sc2 is not paying off at all. And if they ever stop, then it will be hard for other tournaments to fill it's void since it will be a huge hole.

Which is honestly pretty generous for the SC2 guys, because it;s gonna take Blizzard quite a while until they fully launch HotS probably.
They're not going to do a WCS for HOTS for a very long time. They're going to do what they do with Hearthstone.

Just wish they never made WCS, i really liked it with GSL being the big tournament everyone cared about and everything else was just kinda there for entertainment in between

I don't think they're going to exactly carbon-copy the WCS model for HotS, but I tihnk they're going to start supporting the pro scene directly around a year after the launch of the game. But they might start doing that right away, seeing the Hearthstone example.

I've played 7 games as Drow, and only won twice. Both wins are as support drow, one because of a bad random, the other because of a terrible draft. Both times I've been like "Okay this is gonna be trolly" but both times we fucking stomped.
Now that I think about it, she's actually got the tools to be a decent support. Am I stupid, or could support drow actually be a reasonably legit thing?

Also, it is good to keep in mind that marketing is one of the most expensive parts of making anything. The movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World cost 60 million to make and over half of that was in marketing and it was an extremely small movie. It is expensive on a level we can't With the amount of eyeballs that WCS gets it is likely a good deal for them in just pure marketing dollars.

I just can't see how many people will actually give Blizzard $40 for Starcraft 2 after watching some WCS at this point... I get it with free to play games, you make more people play your game and some of them will spend the money. But with SC2's business model? And it seems like a pretty damn convoluted plan to promote their other games, it would make much ore sense to promote the other games directly, wouldn't it?

In pubs most supports don't do anything because carries don't want to do anything, most anything can be an ok support, ive done support medusa and its suprisingly ok, arcanes mek and you are really tanky, and your nuke is pretty decent in a teamfight, as long as you can offer something you can be ok. I remember when invokers cold snap did 60/30/30 level 1, and i went quas wex invoker support and did alot of work. Most non traditional supports that kinda work are ranged heroes so you can atleast zone out offlaners and stuff like that.

Your assuming the established audience would just swap over to watch whatever Blizzard decided to use that marketing money for. The hard part about advertising: getting people to look at your advertising.

SC2 still has Legacy of the Void yet to come out and iron out a few things (hopefully), and WCS is still around until then.
Tried out Techies vs. bots today. Still don't want to do all pick just yet.

I don't get how legacy can fix problems people have with the game. Can't a balance patch do the same thing? Like all I can think of an expansion pack doing is adding more units.

it needs some decent units that are exciting
only exciting thing in this game were old widow mines and marine splits
