Okay, my evaluation of the changes in 1.04. I'm using a WD with 60k dps, and testing in the Fields of Slaughter. I compared spells to the usual splinters/bats/bears build.
Flaming dart: Pretty much the same as splinters.. Spiders: Not bad dps, but still extremely clunky. Poison darts are still better. Spider queen: Sucks so bad. Poison frogs: Don't like them. Firebomb: Actually pretty good; you get decent damage with AoE. Roll the bones still the best rune; the others are crap. Pyrogeist might be useful against bosses like Ghom, but that's it.
Grasp of the dead: 80% slow rune still the best. Hungry bats: Sucks, you need to stand still to spam them when you should be kiting. Also, single target. Acid cloud: Improvements are nice, but bats/bears are still better. Of all the runes, the increased radius one is probably the most useful (although slow burn has nice dps against targets that aren't chasing you). Zombie charger: Bears still best. Wall of zombies: Holy shit that's a massive dps increase. Plonk one in front of your enemies and watch them drop like flies.
Spirit walk: Jaunt still best. Soul harvest: I don't like going into close range..
Gargantuan: Still dies pretty fast... Zombie dogs: They die fast to big packs but otherwise tank better than the gargantuan..
TLDR: Firebomb (roll the bones) is a good replacement to splinters, although you have to keep most of the "standard" spells. Dire bats and bears are still the best sources of burst AoE damage, acid cloud is still inferior. Pets may seem good now, but they still roll over and die to large mobs. And holy crap zombie wall does a ton of damage. Use it.
My build is something like this: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/witch-doctor#SZUkXY!aeW!ZaaZbc Still stuck with mass CC, but your CC actually does decent damage. I'm using the dogs to tank elites more than anything else. Your base mana regen is so high, you don't actually need SA or VQ..

Gargantuan with 1k resist (not hard to get in a group with barbs) just wont fucking die. Its awesome.
Im running splinters, garg, soul harvest, acid cloud, totem and spirit walk with jungle fort, pierce the veil and gruesome. 95-200k dps depending on stacks and gargantuan tanking like a boss.
|
@Heh_ what about health globe/dogs rune on GotD? Seems good on paper, specially with Gruesome Feast (and you dont need to waste skill slot for summon dogs)
You probably have low armor/resists, a lot of ppl are saying that gargs are invincible. Also you should switch your wall of zombies rune for wider wall (they cannot pass the wall anyways) No Soul Harvest? Not taking 20-25% damage boost always seemed 'bad' IMO.
What about spirit barrage phantasm for aoe? Or firebomb as main + sb for single?

Been doing awesome with a pet build in Act 3 WITH 352% mf with valor and lvl 3 paragon.
35k dps / 27k life / ~350 all res
1. rain of toads left mouse (when mana runs dry) 2. direbats right mouse 3. zombie dogs with leeching beasts 4. garg with bruiser 5. spirit walk with jaunt 6. big bad voodoo with rain dance (for spamming bats)
passives: zombie handler, jungle fortitude, spirit vessel
Coming from a VQ firebats build so this is very far from tweaked to be the best it could be but I can farm Act 3 very nicely now so I'm happy!

Changed my build from the above to dogs over totem and its even more retarded. While some mobs (specially teleporters) will swap aggro at random you basically take no damage and just spam that acid cloud like there's no tomorrow.
The only mob that destroyed my pets were the charging dudes in icefall cave, I think the force armor from pets is not working for those.

Damn, got shutdown by Cydea...I hadn't killed her since the patch buffing her spiders TT holy shit that's hard

yeah garg pretty much never dies now. zombie dogs last for a long time as well. i have 750 resists.
sacrifice with the pride rune is quite interesting with bears. it instantly restores all your mana.

(EU WD here) I love the 80% slow from the unrelenting grasp rune. Mobs caught in the area move at half the speed compared to 50% slow.. They basically become sitting ducks so you can throw a ton of stuff at them. The 60% slow also isn't really effective on elites compared to 80%.
I have about 300 allres so maybe that's why the garg didn't feel effective to me. Also, I tested it against an elite blood clan warrior. For normal mobs, the garg is pretty invincible but I prefer the facetanking potential of zombie dogs.
Spirit barrage for single target dps isn't really good because it deals a bit more damage compared to splinters but drinks up your mana pool (your base regen is sufficient to maintain casting constantly if you don't have high mana cost spammables). Phantasm isn't really good because it deals a measly 45% damage per second, which is the same as GotD but in a smaller AoE and no slow. Pre 1.04, I tried a mass AoE build with acid cloud, GotD and phantasm... the last skill was the most useless one. After the slight damage buff, it's still ppretty useless.
Firebomb is really good imo. It might seem like it deals little damage, but it's really comparable to the wizard's piercing orb rune. It's good against most things except bosses; you take forever to kill them.
After playing for a few hours, I've made a few changes. Zombie dogs are good at facetanking even though I'm a glass cannon, that I have no need for horrify as an additional CC. I replaced it with splinters for single target dps against bosses. It deals good sustained dps without sucking my mana dry..

1. fire bomb (bounce or last one) 2. wall (width) 3. grasp (10% for globes and zombie dogs[but dogs are bugged{they dont have force armor}]) hope they fix it soon 4. spirit walk (healing) 5. soul harvest (time) 6. garg (bruiser or the frenzy one) [maybe switch for dogs?]
pass: PtV, SV, Gruesome Feast
I have no idea what to do with mana though, I tried Spirit barrage for single target dps but I don't like it. I don't feel like taking another aoe damage mana damp, cause firebomb 3 hits normal monsters and bonus from grasp+globes pretty much makes it better than firebats or something.
Clearing A3 slighly faster than pre patch.

With a proper build Gargs/Dogs are pretty much invincible to a vast majority of the mobs. With minimal gear you can farm Act 3 pretty easily just through sheer attrition.
|
I am new to diablo3 i am playing WD, and i would like to know if LoH works with Poison Dart skill?
|
I've been wondering about Firebomb. Does the extra 30% from Ghost Bomb affect the primary target too? If so, isn't Ghost Bomb better than Roll the bones?

How exactly would you kills Act 3 mobs through "sheer attrition". Please elaborate!

Yes. Is it better? No idea, but I use it more than Roll

with 600 allres, 50k hp and 3800 armor my garg rarely dies, dogs die more often but usually you have cooldown ready so they have like 80-90% uptime (zero passives for pets/survivability)

I've been having good farming success with http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/witch-doctor#WRUQTY!Xda!bacYcc It has really mobile dps and can clear rooms in seconds. With just a tiny bit of lifesteal, you don't die easily. My pets can die but I can almost always resummon them right away.
No legendaries yet T_T
EDIT: Another good build is this: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/witch-doctor#SfUdTQ!aYW!acaYZb
You just need a tiny bit of pick up radius so that you can pick up the health orbs. With soul harvest and gruesome feast, my firebomb can kill elites in less than ten seconds. The bears are really just there in case of horde or illusion elites. I am thinking of adding the zombie dogs passive in, although I heard that the passive is bugged so the dogs have no force armor.
|
Does anyone know if someome has tried a thorns build with the new pet tankability. There is a passive that makes the pets share your thorns value. If you can get high thorns, int, vit, crit you could do a lot of damage while your pets do even more damage.
|
I don't think anyone has tried it because even if it is effective it would still be boring. You need to invest in thorns/life regen(probably not necessary anymore) gear and pick up the fierce loyalty passive. It's not versatile, if you invest in that gear, you must always use pets/fierce loyalty, and if your pets survive against everything and deal the hurt(thorns) then you won't want to pick up sacrifice. Maybe there should be some WD legendary armor to complete this build where your primary and off-hand are pom-poms.
