Played like 15 hours the last 2 days. Didn't read much about the abilities and stuff; @ level 37 just finished Act II am wondering if my 3k health / ~400 dmg unbuffed is a bit low.
I'm using Direbats / splinters / garg / spirit dash / confuse and Soul Harvest. Am I missing on any cool abilities ? I see people here mentioning locusts a lot. I just want to rush it to level 60 asap. ( I spam poison darts after I go in and soul harvest, with a random dire bat here and there)
As passives i'm using the Health Globe one ( 10% mana and 10% int), 20% more dmg but 30% more mana cost and the Spirit walk cd reduction one.
TL;DR Spoonfeed me a build that can rush to 60. Don't have any trouble surviving, it's just that i feel my damage output could be a lot bigger if I'd use the right abilities.

Are you on nightmare? 3k is crazy low.... Whats your int at?
I'm having crazy crits with zombie wall with pile on rune ... I just dinged 60, bought a cheap 800 dps 2h from ah, and crit 184k on first boss act IV ( with 5x soul harvest, globe int bonus)... Is this normal?

the fun ends when you exit Hell and enter Inferno
just completed A1 Inferno
from my brief foray into A2, I don't have much room for error (basically no room) lol

You mean the fun starts,, right? xD
Or it ends, if you were using dogs and sacrifice =(
Mortar, jail, vortex + molten or plagued, chains, there are just way too many things that 1 hit you in inferno... I'm not sure having 40k hp or more will be enough, is it ?...
I really don't see myself holding the elites anymore. It was already a pain in the ass in act3/4 in hell but inferno ? Give me a break.

Yeah its fun, but I am going to guarantee you that you will change the Gylph to one of the ones that still keep the original Zombie wall intact.
The wall that it creates on the runes that don't change it entirely actually has collision and monsters can't cross--including elites and flying monsters, it is invaluable on Inferno and it rivals Spirit Walk in terms of survivability. It is pretty much like a Force Field.
I think I would have stopped playing D3 out of frustration after trying to get through ACT2 on Inferno if it weren't for Zombie wall lol.
But that is the really lame part about Inferno, all the CC skills have like 60%-80% reduction on Elites AND can get resisted, the only skills that really keep their effectiveness through each difficulty are Grasp of the Earth, Zombie Wall (minus Dead Rush/Pile On) and Horrify+Stalker Rune or Horrify+Armor rune...

Get more Resistance and Armor. Also pick up Jungle Fortitude as well.
What do you think is better?
45k HP 35% Damage reduction from Armor 25% damage reduction from Resistance
or
30k HP 55% Damage reduction from Armor 50% Damage reduction from Resistance

Perhaps as far as damage per mana goes (with the mana return glyph). I'm actually curious as to best single target dps and best single target damage per mana at 60 as well, maybe I'll do some math and report back.

I stack tons of thorns/life regen gear on my items, getting as much int as possible as well. With the perk Fierce Loyalty all my thorns/life regen is shared to my pets. When you have 8-10 fetishes that are running around with a 500 dmg thorns hit and life regen, they do alright.
They do even better vs mobs that have AOE, like plague/molten. I'm not sure if they get one shot by bossess, but they effectively surround and control the typical pack of minions in nightmare. I just started hell and I'll see how it fares there. With a group of friends I swap out the AOE slow for haunt or something with more damage.
500 damage (or even 1000 for that matter) is extremely miniscule in Inferno. It's like trying to tickle an elephant. At higher difficulties, pets basically function as a distraction, so you and the others can pile on the damage. Once your pets get raped, there's nothing between squishy you and the millions of mobs.
Well considering I'm only level 52, that ammount of damage isn't very miniscule and infact the number is growing very large with ever level I gain. I have a shield waiting for me at 56 that gives +356 thorns and a ton of armor/resist alone. I'm hoping I can get up to 5,000+ damage from thorns when I am level 60.
I did change my build slightly though, Using Snake to the Face and Kiss of death on my mouse instead.

no way, splinter poison darts do 180%WD and cost like 4 mana.

Yeah this, I didn't even bother with a follow up when I actually thought about it lol ><
@ Torte, what difficulty and level? Can give some tips. Apparently a lot of people have had issues getting their witch doctor off the ground, per se, and dislike the class because of it. Somewhat disappointing D:

Don't tell blizzard.
Once I got zombie bears I was having a blast. Spell is quite fun. Though I never used a build that had cooldowns long enough to really enjoy vision quest, I should rearrange a bit for that. Usually I'd just pop Spirit Walk with the mana regen rune and burn during that, the extra safety of phasing out is nice as well (defensive cooldowns as you mentioned)

This doesn't work beyond Act I inferno. It works in act III, but in Act IV and II (open-area Act II), the lack of range, how fast it drains your mana and the huge cooldowns on your CCs (Hex with Hedge/Fear with armor, Grasp of the Dead, Wall of Zombies, Spirit Walk + 3sec + passive, etc.) doesn't let you survive at all and continually shoot out DPS
