They look identical from the screenshot, except the newer version looks like it has slightly darker lighting.

Playing the map it feels like a mixture of shakuras and lost temple with the best of both. Something that's immediately obvious is, that the natural in the back of your base is literally free, you get it on a silver plate. Nevertheless this expo is ridiculously exposed to air harass from basicly everywhere, in PvZ my phoenix-harass was really effective there. The next thing that you notice when playing the map is, that the 3rd and 4th have rocks on it - especially in the PvZs this was pretty annoying to deal with, because even if the rocks at the 3rd are no problem at all, you kinda "never" feel safe enough to go and destroy the rocks at the 4th. It mostly feels better to just expand in one of the other mains while keeping the pressure up. The 3rd itself is also quite easy to defend, even if there are two entrances, you can position your army in the middle and be fine. Nevertheless everything beyond that becomes ridiculously difficult to deal with and requires precise decisionmaking. Otherwise the newly aquired expos will just die. This whole set-up makes the openings highly macro and harassment-based, all-ins are extremely hard in comparison to, say, Xel Naga. Nevertheless, since everything beyond the 3rd becomes a nightmare to defend, the game doesn't evolve into a "static" campfest, like you have it sometimes on blistering sands when the map is split.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that (obviously I thought it was just a coincidence that I never got cross position when playing on it). Do you know why this is the case? Did the developers fear the map would have gotten "too big" and too much of a camp-fest? Because the running-distances don't really differ that much, the biggest difference is air harass/flying distance.

Interestingly although the map is huge close positions are still quite close. the enormousness of it could only be realized in a later game where its split down the middle

Btw trying out iCCup maps would be a huge slap to the face. They are renowned as the organization that allowed alternate/private servers for BW/WC3, much to the chagrin of blizzard. I doubt Blizzard/Gom will ever try out GSL maps just for political ramifications.
