You don't need to, and you would probably be better off making the shift to an AM3 motherboard and processor and then getting a new gfx card late considering how big of an architecture improvement the phenom II cards are.
|
I think a lot of you guys are overshooting the minimum requirements of SC2. Blizzard has had an amazing track record with keeping their games tight and playable on lower-end computers even if it means taking a graphics hit. WC3 and WoW have ridiculously low requirements for their release times.

Everything should be completely fine. I would upgrade the graphics card, but that's only because there is no room for improvement in any other department :p
however, I don't believe it is possible to upgrade a laptop gpu

It is possible to upgrade dedicated cards at a service center, and i'm sure there are some hardasses who know how to do it on their own, but the problem is that there is no where to buy a laptop gpu.

I was thinking about ordering the part from Dell and having it installed at Best Buy. There's also an IT guy where I work that may be able to install it.
According to the Dell website my laptop can upgrade to these: NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500M - 256MB [add $110] NVIDIA® GeForce® G210M – 512MB [add $135]
I'm guessing the G210M is the better buy. Thanks for help Frag/gherm

***NEED HELP***
Hey guys, im a bit stumped and hitting a crossroad... I feel my computer isn't quite "up to snuff" if I so eloquently put it that way...
My parents are giving me the grace of spending $800 to build a new computer... Was wondering if any of you could try to build the best rig for around that price as best as you could... Clearly to run games like sc2, d3, all next-gen games on higher quality... (if possible for the price range)...
Because I certainly dont exactly know what to get to be a said "GOOD" machine... umm if you do.. please email me the rig specs + price + website (preferably tigerdirect or NCIX) cuz I live in vancouver, canada..
**SIDE NOTE**: I do not need a beefy harddrive (anywhere between 150-300gigs [7200-10000rpm] is fine for me) id rather the extra money be spent on video card(s), processor, motherboard, ram... Same with it does not need to be a fancy computer chassis... Focus on vid card(s), processor, mobo, ram, and PSU...
**SIDE NOTE** A computer im somewhat looking at and want specs around is this (however im under the impression it's video card and mobo arent really worth it):
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5373970&Sku=H25-10028 CA
HP Pavilion Elite e9220f Desktop PC - AMD Phenom II X4 910 2.6GHz, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, DVDRW, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, ATI Radeon HD 4350 Graphics Card for $649.97
Would greatly appreciate anyone to help..

They are both terrible cards, but yes the 210M is the better buy

you should overclock that, i have a similar setup that i just recently overclocked and it made a huge difference. if you want to take some pictures of your bios screen i could walk you through it. it would help if you got an aftermarket cpu cooler tho. if the overclock works out then it might be benifitial, otherwise id save up for a new setup

you have the budget to get into a core i so i would do that, heres a build i just whipped up. its a little over budget with the 5850 but you could step down to the 5770 and be under 800 http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=16883268

There you go.

why do you recommend a thread about building a $600 PC when he has 800 to use?
that said his build is terrible. Buying a HAF 932 and putting that stuff in it? lol?
As for $800, you can squeeze an i5 and a 5770 into that without too much fuss, and you can go AMD with the P2 955 (though this option is a bit less appealing in the wake of the i5).

Because he doesn't have to follow it verbatim, but rather use it as a guideline?

Nonononononononon. The 210m is NOT THE BEST. It is the 45 nm rebrand on the 9400m. The 9500m has more SP and is faster. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-G-210M.17638.0.html
|
If it's the 9500 GS then yes, it would be superior to the 210, but if Dell doesn't specify, it is probably a 9500M G which is inferior
|
I was thinking of picking up a new graphics card with some of my annual bonus money. I'm a cheapskate at heart, so I want to spend as little as possible.
Is an ATI 5770 good enough or should I spend the extra $100 or so to get a 5850?
I'm buying ATI because they have open source linux graphics drivers.
EDIT: I already have an i5 750 CPU. I assume that's good enough, right?
|
a 5850 will probably save you money in the long run but you're still shelling out $320ish compared to $150ish. best to wait till nvidia releases their dx11 cards if you can hold out for a month or two.
also, what card you plan on purchasing depends a lot on what resolution you plan on playing at.
i5 750 should be more than enough
|
A 5850 is probably the best way to go right now, but as mahnini says, the best thing to do is wait until Nvidia rolls out with the dx11 cards. Though I think the 5770 can handle SC2 at most resolutions :p
i5 750 will be more than enough for anything that SC2 can throw at you.
