So for shits and giggles i've decided i'm going to write a proper article with proper math about how horribly messed up item scaling is in wow, and about how Blizzard screwed up the stat squish. As a template for character power i'll just use single target dps during a single target, low-ish mobility raid encounter (without any external buffs/debuffs that boost damage), it seems like the closest thing to actually quantify damage reliably. The closest to Patchwerk the better. However, i wasn't active during a few raid tiers and i'm not sure which fights to look at for the others. The tiers i that im unsure of are:

1) Ulduar/t8: Kologarn or Auriaya i guess? Hodir had a dps boost iirc, on Mimiron you were running all the time, XT had a dps boost during the heart phase, Vexaz had the mana regen stuff, Freya had adds (i cant recall how much aoe though), not sure about Ignis (i think adds got increased damage?).
2) TotC/t9: no good single target fights in this tier imo
3) t11-t15, t18: i wasnt raiding at the time so idk how these fights work

Got any suggestions? I'm thinking of skipping t9 entirely. Also i will completely skip Vanilla, game was too big of a clusterfuck back then.

Lord Jaraxxus i would use in TotC or you could use VoA bosses too in that tier
Tier 11 Take your pick, raids are Blackwing Descent - Throne of the 4 winds - The Bastion of Twilight
I would suggest To4W and pick Al'Akir
Tier 12 is Firelands, Baleroc i would choose here
Tier 13 is Dragon Soul, use Ultraxion here
Tier 14 these the first 3 raids of MoP , could use the 2nd boss in Mogu'Shan Vaults Feng the Accursed
Tier 15 Throne of Thunder here i am actually struggling, because im not sure there was a tank and spank fight which involved just the boss and no external factors ala buffs to dps or nerfs to it. Struggling here
Tier 18 Hellfire - Use Fel Lord Zakuun here

t8: Kologarn had adds and the arms, could screw numbers. Auriaya had the 9 lives cat tho you could ignore it.
Freya had a decent amount of aoe.
Ignis the cooled down adds had 50% increase crit chance and would die if they took a 5k hit. Should be able to find people who didnt hit them for a benchmark.

T9. Best bet might be checking part of the first encounter. The magnataur and the worms had no damage increase

T11: Chimaeron
T12: normal mode Majordomo. Heroic Shannox (tho you would have to check they didnt 'cheat' on the adds)
T13: Ultraxion
T14: Feng the Accursed
T15: Ra-den is probably the closest? It had a regular add tho.

And oh right i thought Al'Akir wasn't that prominent with the add. When i did this raid it was the easiest thing i have ever done lol that is all i remember.

@Gorsameth, i wasnt around for Firelands, what do you mean cheat on the adds?

I'm fine with just one add you need to switch to or a little movement (not durumu tho); for icc i'll use marrowgar, saurfang and festergut probably (or rotface? cant remember which one of the two was the patchwerk boss), the more data points i have the better. As long as there are no massive breaks in a fight (like illidan) or aoe phases like Solarian it should be ok.

My idea to estimate dps was just to look at first kills of famous guilds, take the top however many dps i can see on recount and average those numbers, it's probably not ideal but it's better than looking at more recent videos with buffs/nerfs to bosses and whatnot. Character performance should also be closer to ideal. I'm not sure about single target council fights though.

For the other tiers im thinking:

t4 Gruul. Kara was 10 man so less buffs, i could possibly add Maulgar. Magtheridon was a clusterfuck so i'll skip that.
t5 Loot Reaver and Leotheras, maybe Karathress. Solarian had adds, Al'ar had down time, Kael'thas is has breaks and aoe, Hydross has adds, Lurker Below had downtime, Tidewalker has adds, Vashj has breaks.
t6 Winterchill and Najentus, possibly Supremus. Unfortunately later on in Black Temple fights are more complex. Also will add Brutallus and cry when i can't see a single mage on recount
t7 Patchwer, duh. I dont think i need anything else from this tier
t10 Marrowgar, Saurfang, Festergut or Rotface whichever of the two is the right one. Later on it becomes messy
t16 Malkorok obviously. Maybe Heroic Jugg too.
t17 Butcher, Gruul

Also the way things like crit/armorpen/haste get exponentially better as more is got (crit in particular) - be it just one or all of them - makes item and spell interaction retarded for both pve and pvp. Any one remember s8 wizards? I had a .4 second fear, gl interrupting on au ping.

Including add fights makes sense as well, at least having a seperate category for similar ones. They are more common then patchwerk.

The one thing people don't mention though is how they changed spellpower coefficients. For reference, Fireball used to be a super hard hitting slow nuke in Wotlk, when it had a ~3 second cast (pre haste) and a 115% (i think?) SP coefficient. Now it's a 2.25 second cast with a 135% coeff and it hits like a fucking wet noodle.

Yeah in ICC use the boss after the ship i forget its name xD that was just one boss right and u tank spank it to forever land. But yeah icc had a few.

Yeah i agree bo1b but also if gear isn't improving and scaling upwards to an extent it isn't very fun to get new pieces. The biggest annoyance i have with gear is "proc" based shit, i hate waiting for RNGesus to do x or y for me, wtf is fun in that.

Depends on the procs, rppm i think is messier than an icd because on some fights you get 8 procs and on others you get like 1. I remember randomly getting a top 99% heroic Gruul parse at BRF release or something stupid like that and going WTF AM I THAT GOOD, then it turned out i just had my legendary ring proc up for most of the fight xD At least icd procs are more consistent, they are basically a trinket that presses itself rather than being tied to a cd macro

The only way they're going to fix it is by gutting the spell power/attack power scaling on skills and increasing the base damage amount. So if (I have no idea about percentages and numbers for the skill indicated) fireball did 1000+ 120% spell power currently, and was changed to do 10000 + 20% instead the scaling would be dramatically better, and have some serious improvements overall to the game. Any one remember when skill was the determining factor in dps between reasonably competent players?

That's fine, kids these days aren't reasonably competent so if you played during the good old days you still outdps them. I haven't met a single mage that can beat my dps since wotlk /humblebrag

also bo1b thanks for that post. I thought i was the only one that realizes that coefficients are a huge fucking issue.

That's because the skills are so out of control that cheap thrills are necessary to keep people playing. This problem only really came about in late cata because the ilvls were so low on previous expansions that content was the main driving factor of raiding, not bigger numbers.

Actually, I'd be interested in whether or not ilvls are increasing more and more per expansion as well. I think mop had almost 200? ilvl increase in total from start to finish. At the end of wrath I believe that shadowmourne was 277 (maybe 288). Makes a pretty big difference.

Ironically, basic item levels aren't that big of a deal, it's how that item level interacts with character power that fucks thigns up. During Wrath you went from 187 to 213 gear going from heroics to naxx25, which is a 12% increase in ilvl. During WoD we went from 630 to ~685 gear, which is only an 8% increase. Yet a BRF geared character does what, twice the dps of someone in heroic gear on single target? More? Compare that to ~50% ish that we had in Wrath...I remember doing ~5k dps in icc gear and ~1.5k ish (i think) in heroic gera during wrath; that's inflated for sure, but that difference is across an entire expansion rather than a single tier like in wod.
