Lions can't have enough TEs that don't catch or block.

Cam Newton doesn't understand why the Saints weren't called for a personal foul on a potential late hit during the Panthers' 27-22 win Sunday. And he really doesn't understand the explanation he got from official Ed Hochuli after the play. Every game, all season "The response I got was: 'Cam you're not old enough to get that call.' . . . I didn't think you had to have seniority to get a personal foul or anything like that," Newton said in his post-game press conference. Newton added that he was "ticked off" at the explanation. He went on to say that everyone has to be accountable, and pointed out that a personal foul on a similar play was called in favor of Saints quarterback Luke McCown earlier in the game. NFL spokesman Michael Signora defended the call. "The officials make decisions based upon the play on the field, and no other factors. On the play in question, there is no roughing the passer because the quarterback is out of the pocket and a runner, and no unnecessary roughness because the contact is not late," Signora said in a statement. NFL VP of officiating Dean Blandino echoed that stance Monday on NFL HQ. "Cam was outside the pocket and he threw the ball on the run," he told NFL Network, adding that Hochuli told him he didn't say anything of the sort to Cam. "There's different protections for a quarterback that is running outside the pocket versus inside the pocket. Outside the pocket, you don't get the two step protection. When you look at the play, Cam threw on the run. There was some contact; it wasn't late and it wasn't a foul." Whether it was a bad call or not, Newton said the explanation bothered him more than anything. "Heaven forbid (Hochuli) get any rookies," Newton said. "They are going to have a long day, man." http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000540502/article/cam-hochuli-said-youre-not-old-enough-to-get-call Ed Hoculli needs to be fired immediately. Props to Cam for exposing the refs for what they really are.

It's not exactly quiet out there, and mishearing somebody seems quite probable, if not likely. Hoculli's defense seems pretty reasonable, saying he merely told him "you were running," or something to that effect. Sure, this doesn't mean Cam is lying. He did seem authentic. It doesn't rule out him mishearing it though.

1. Cardinals - 126 points 2. Patriots - 119 points 3. Bills - 100 points So who saw the Cardinals as the only team to outscore the Patriots over the first 3 games? If I had to guess before the season, I'd say they would reach 126 points by week 7-8. The Bills are in third place led by noted offensive juggernaut Tyrod Taylor. And I'm going to win in fantasy this week because of Devonta Freeman. Such is life in a 2 QB league with Brees and Romo. Even my kicker got food poisoning.

aaaaand im definitely trusting hochuli over newton at the moment. newton has gotten more mature but he's very very far from "if he said it, it must be true" status. but where is the all 22 film for that play? i wanna see it for myself. when cam is outside the pocket, he's a runner, and runners can still get shoved late without a flag, although they're cracking down on that too this season. a QB with the ball out of his hands, standing in the pocket, can still get hit hard legally if it's done fast enough. outside of the pocket and running, there's more leeway. and if a collision is unavoidable due to momentum, momentum which you wouldnt ever stop because you know cam can run, then it's a matter of judging whether the defender still lays on a hard hit or pulls up and minimizes the impact. and even if hochuli did say it, it doesn't mean it's true. watching the way players behave, they're often a bunch of children out there. when they're not letting their emotions control them, they're purposely being as deceptive as possible, often outright lying to refs to try to get a call or bank some sympathy to try to get a call in their favor later. the babysitting and management the refs have to do gets downright comical for a neutral observer and so i think they deserve some leeway on what they say and what tactics they have to employ to deal with players, who themselves could act professional in the first place and massively increase the chances of being treated professionally by the refs. a player alleging a ref said something isn't exposing anything. an analysis of all the calls refs make that concludes they're biased has always been possible and would be the only thing that'd actually expose a flaw in their calls. i'm sure some people who trust newton are already looking through film of hochuli's games, trying to find proof of bias. if a good study concludes that he's biased, i'll be interested

And don't think the other refs are going to forget that Cam turned on Hochuli. Hochuli is the closest thing professional sports have to a celebrity official.

Arizona has been the beneficiary of being excellent passing team and playing three terrible pass defenses. Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco, are surely among the 8 worst pass defenses in the league. Two other member of this club are Atlanta and Oakland. I think Miami just might fall into this group of ignomy, as well. Arizona dominating these bad teams is very impressive, and those two Colin Kaepernick gifts sure helped them outscore the Patriots.

but I agree with Nony: I like Cam, but in my mind, that's not someone I automatically believe about something like that.

This is the best start in Patriots team history in terms of points scored over the first three games. This is not the regular kind of luck that happens every season but more of a once in a generation fluke. Yeah, the sample size is small but Arizona's start is the second best in league history and most people did not expect them to be an offensive juggernaut. Only the 2013 Broncos had a better start, by 1 point. The DST tds helped, sure, but remove those and the performance is still impressive considering the team involved.
