What I meant was that if cultural conservatism in Europe is increasing anywhere, it is in communities dominated by recent immigrants who have brought their more conservative cultural norms from home with them. I totally agree with everything else you said there. I must have. It sounded like you thought there was a slight shift to cultural conservatism due to immigration.

Most probably, most of those misses are just people trying to zoom in or shift the map or something. yeah yeah

Although yes Americans are bad at geography. I never once took a single geography class in all my years in NYC public schools. Shit one of the maps in my classrooms said USSR on it and one of my textbooks claimed that man had never gone to the moon.

Oh my, finally a post of yours I like and can agree with :p As to the results of the internet poll-- he does have a point that internet polls are extremely inaccurate. But at the same time Americans are extremely ignorant of global geography compared to other developed countries. I wouldn't be surprised if the number was 1 in 6. In defence of Americans, why should they know European geography so well? They have 50 states to remember, each being quite unique (the US is very much like a federation of states with each state having a lot of autonomy). That's their world- where they live, where they travel. I'd be curious to see what percentage of Europeans can point out NY state on a map. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a similar number. And to sum up, yes American's can be very dumb ![]()

Pointing out NY state would be like pointing out the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands on the map.

Americans don't see it that way but yes our education here just teaches us where the US is and doesn't really focus on what state is where.

Americans generally aren't taught anything about geography anymore. I remember once in high school, my honors history class (ie the supposedly smartest, best-educated kids) was asked to draw a map of the world on the first day of class. We weren't allowed to use any references during the exercise. The shit that was produced was too funny to believe. Most maps omitted entire continents.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/robinedds/its-thanksgiving-so-we-asked-some-brits-to-label-the-us-stat People usually don't remember what they learned in geography class when they were in 3rd grade that they never saw again that has zero impact on their personal lives or their employment as adults. People don't remember things that aren't important to them. Nobody running schools anywhere really thinks geography is that important, so almost nobody anywhere still remembers the 2 hours they spent on world geography when they were 8. But they are naive to the point of stupidity, participating in shit like this. No one asks you to pinpoint a country on a map unless they want to make fun of you for being stupid if you fail ![]() Also: http://www.geographyzone.com/new/index.php?t=1&b=2 Haha eat it Frenchies! And radiotren, my sincerest apologies on you living in a country apparently full of mouthbreathers. Meanwhile, my shame will never lessen after seeing... 135 North Korea 140 United States 145 France 159 Denmark (also if you try to take this geography zone challenge thing it is really stupid and easy to misclick and get a wrong answer and SHAME YOUR COUNTRY FOREVER so be careful!)
