Huh. Didn't know this was happening. Looks like an adventure. Personally I don't see any benefit in the Republicans doing this - Comey gave them all but an indiction to work with. It's not his problem that Trump is just that bad.

Also, I just found out that Comey is 6 ft 8 in. Holy shit he's huge.

Comey deservers to get grilled for a lot of shit (Mr. "System-backdoors-but-only-for-good-guys" and "Encryption should be illegal"), but naturally government officials are only held up for things no one cares about.

Intelligence officials want easier access to data. In other news water is wet.

Intelligence officials should also want to keep access to data away from everyone else and generally know what they're talking about.

I wouldn't blame a general for wanting better weapons. I'd call him a giant moron if he started demanding nuclear weapons that couldn't kill Americans.

This is one of those reasons I say that I'm always suspicious of military/intelligence/law officials taking a position of elected office, especially the presidency. It's a valid concern, but I offer a lot of leeway to them if they stay within their area of expertise.

Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, okay, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, okay, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it’s true! — but when you're a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are (nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right — who would have thought?), but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it’s four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.

House and Senate leaders on Wednesday morning were putting the finishing touches on a deal to avert a government shutdown, fund the government into mid-December and leave town to focus on Election Day.

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) huddled twice Tuesday to iron out a dispute over what to do about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Democrats had demanded money to address the lead contamination issue be added to the short-term stop gap measure — called a continuing resolution, or CR — but Republicans say Flint should be dealt with in another bill.

The two worked out an agreement Tuesday evening that involves an amendment to authorize $170 million in water legislation that is expected to pass the House as early as Wednesday. That move appeared to satisfy Democrats seeking assurances that the beleaguered Michigan city would receive federal aid.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Senate Democrats were prepared to accept the bipartisan House deal on Flint and said he expected speedy action on the CR to follow.

“I am convinced that there is going to be help for Flint in the lame duck,” Reid said. “They’ve been waiting for help, they deserve help. I am very happy it is going to come.”

Reid said today would be “a good day for the Senate,” and that though there were a couple other outstanding issues on the CR, he expected them to be resolved.

Republican leaders likewise sounded confident they could avert a government shutdown.

“You don’t see a lot of talk about a government shutdown right now,” Ryan said at the Economic Club of Washington Wednesday morning. “Why? Because we’re not going to have one…We’re basically having a low-drama moment here because we’ve taken the sting out of the room.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Wednesday that senators should be prepared for votes later Wednesday on the short-term funding measure.

I'm fine with the main government being lawyers. They write laws, and well written laws are important. But they need to defer to experts to figure out what laws need to be passed, and the repercussions of those laws.

The FBI in general also does an amazing job antagonizing any tech experts that could possibly want to work for them, either by treating them as enemies, or by expecting magical solutions that only CSI can deliver (I believe "nerd harder" was the Clinton quote for it).

Also Donald Trump is now claiming that he won and that everyone says he won but also the reason he lost is because he deliberately held back so although he lost he lost on purpose so really he won and also he won so he doesn't know why anyone even thinks he lost but if he did lose that means he won.

I mean for fucks sake, even most of his allies are admitting he lost and rationalizing it instead of pretending he won.

It depends upon how you judge the debate. If you're judging the debate by traditional, political standards, then yes, Trump lost. But Trump's campaign clearly is running on the theory that traditional, political standards don't really apply to him. All you have to do is look at the post-debate comments by Trump's inner circle to see what his campaign actually cares about. Sure, I have no doubt that Trump's campaign is disappointed by Trump's performance when gauged by the traditional, political standards, and that it is expected that he'll do better in the future.

And why would anyone expect Trump to admit that he lost the debate? He has pretty much never done this before, and the tactic has served him well. Admitting defeat would do nothing to further his cause.

That criticism, I can definitely agree with you on. I will add on a further criticism of the intelligence wing of the US, including the FBI: its willingness to take a "principled" stance on decidedly corporate issues like illegal downloading. It's not the job of the intelligence wing to side with corporate profits, their job is to ensure the security of the country. In the aftermath of 9/11, the US intelligence/security branch found that they had a lot of incompetence because a poorly developed security clearance process disqualified a lot of talented and valuable people who could have been working for them.

Even real lawyers wouldn’t try this stuff because the Judge plays referee on this like this. If an attorney are clearly wasting the witness’s time and is poorly prepared, they could get slapped around by the judge. Congress doesn’t have such features, sadly. It is to bad we can’t have the notorious RBG drive down and slap the congress member for not understanding how pleading the 5th works.

I truly think many of these people have simply taken the perspective of "Hilary can not be president" and are just doing whatever they can to help. I think they know what is happening but think the stakes are too high.

I am now convinced that he's actually this person. If he was actually well calculated, he would have appeared as normal as possible. I think from here, support crystallizes and Clinton sweeps.

Clinton taking full responsibility for emails and saying she wouldn't do it again just makes any more questions besting a dead horse. What a relief.

She should be in jail then.

You're welcome to send a letter to the Department of Justice so that they can be made aware of their mistake.

Justice is only available for the weak.
But thanks to remind us the total impudence of the elite.

Justice is only a option for the weak????? So the strong don't get justice????

Being responsible for a mistake doesn't make it criminal.

You guys are very distrusting of the government when it comes to lack of prosecution of police officers because of bias or corruption in the system, but very quick to agree with an FBI director who's boss and who's future boss are relevant to his recommendation to or not to prosecute, all under extremely suspect and unique circumstances.
Question.?

Alright, I'm done. I wanted to watch in case something good happened, but these are complete lightweights. They don't even research what they are talking about. Comey is constantly correcting them for being just so unbelievably wrong. What a sad, sad mess.

Yeah this is a trainwreck. I, too, am done - I have more important things to do than watch an obvious farce of a questioning session. The expression on Comey's face suggests he is thinking, "fucking morons wasting my time."

It's internet lawyers versus the director of the FBI

Even real lawyers wouldn’t try this stuff because the Judge plays referee on this like this. If an attorney are clearly wasting the witness’s time and is poorly prepared, they could get slapped around by the judge. Congress doesn’t have such features, sadly. It is to bad we can’t have the notorious RBG drive down and slap the congress member for not understanding how pleading the 5th works.

Sad thing is a lot of these people are actual lawyers and they should know better.

Being an attorney only proves you passed the BAR and didn't get your license taken away. We had an attorney challenge a part of our case recently because we "couldn't prove the mail was delivered by the US post office". He wanted us to prove something was mailed and that we couldn't satisfy the "chain of evidence" as used in criminal cases. About half way through the argument the judge figured out he was talking about a chain of evidence for mail, the lost his shit and told the entire the entire legal system could break down if we couldn't trust mail was delivered.

The same attorney is trying the argument again in front of another court. He thinks he has a winner.

Many of the member of congress remind me of this attorney. They have a law degree, but have not felt the pain of being wrong in a public setting and getting slapped for it.

I truly think many of these people have simply taken the perspective of "Hilary can not be president" and are just doing whatever they can to help. I think they know what is happening but think the stakes are too high.

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you why the "Trump cannot be president no matter what" approach is short-sighted, with this example as evidence.

I don't take the perspective that Trump can't be president. I take the perspective that a Clinton presidency would have a non-zero benefit over a Trump presidency. So long as one side is better than the other, everything else is irrelevant to me, so long as only 2 options exist.
