If you've seen some of the Engrish out there, you'd hardly be surprised by this. Anyways, their extent of their research is probably just making sure that "nigger" means "black man". Even if someone told them it was offensive, it's hard to appreciate the degree of offensiveness in another language. If you told me a word in another language was a bad word, I'd have no idea if it's the equivalent of "crap" or "cunt". And while naming your store "black man" is still offensive to us in North America, in my experience Asian countries are more tolerant of racial stereotyping against minorities.

I think I've seen this shop in person! It's near a tourist area in Hong Kong. The sign in Chinese (黑人王) is literally translated as "black man king" or "king of the black people". I think the exact word choice was an accident; many of my Chinese friends don't think the n-word is offensive. They pick it up from music and the internet and usually think it's a friendly term. You' be surprised how many words leak into Asian languages without them actually absorbing the meaning behind it. As a Japanese speaker, there's no end of words in Japanese that are actually English words but don't mean even slightly the same thing. I'd imagine that's the case here. They heard it in a hip hop song or two, they figure it means black person in a "bro" type sense, call their store that.

no one should get butthurt over this, its just difference in culture. chinese people dont think of it as a bad word. i know a lot of people in my family point at things with their middle fingers all the time without realizing the western interpretation of it.

Well if a lot of your English came from american rap/pop music you probably wouldn't understand that the N word is not acceptable for a store name since they say it all the time!

Over here its called Darlie in english, while keeping the same chinese name. I guess calling it N-word toothpaste would be too much XD

That's the key word on so many levels. Especially in countries/areas/communities where people are more tolerant things like this aren't seen as offensive as in those where this isn't true.
Why? Because all involved parties share a laugh about it and get along happily. The only reason I see people being offended by this is because it touches their own feelings about the issue, I think it's pretty narrow minded and intolerant to keep pushing down our throats how horrible certain words are. Those are the people who insist on the negative context of those words and make the whole issue worse.

And Negro comes from the Latin word "Niger", which means black, and is actually much closer to the derogatory term "Nigger".
