Hi guys!
I've been following competitive StarCraft for a little bit (not very long! ^_^; and so far I'm enjoying the fandom, the analyses and other stuff. But sometimes when I read threads here I see you guys use the word 'hwaiting' and I'm not really sure what it means exactly.
From the context I think you guys are cheering for a specific team or player? Because I see stuff like "Flash hwaiting" or "SKT hwaiting" and things like that. Are you implying that they're waiting for something? Like is it meant to mean that they're waiting for their win or their next victim?
I also just assumed that the 'h' is added at the front because of some TL meme? I thought maybe an affluent member typed hwaiting instead of waiting and it became a meme?

I think it comes from "fighting", but I`m not quite sure.

Yes when Koreans say ”fighting” the ”f” sound often comes out sounding a bit like ”hw”.

it means fighting.
usually during the countdown before the game you can hear the fans at the studio go"3,2,1 x(player's real name) HWAITING!!"
Example:"3,2,1 Lee Young Ho(Flash) HWAITING!!!

i am clearly way too asian, because it's never even occured to me that hwaiting could be pronounced any other way than fighting without the f.

its a word that means gogogo or you can do it its encourgament comes from figthing but koreans have hard time pronunciating "f" so they HW (hwaiting) but its figthing :D

Up until about 2 weeks ago i though Hwaiting came from something Hwasin did. I´ve been following korean starcraft since 2006. True story.

I don't think I've ever come across a word that has been mis-pronounced by a culture because it's 'cool' to use english words, that is then taken in its new form and pronounced as such by practitioners of the original language, because it's 'cool'. Strange.

ps: why write it with a "a", it should be written "hwiting" or "hwaïting"

There's also paiting, which is exactly the same as hwaiting. It just comes from how koreans pronounce the "f".
So 화이팅+ 파이팅 = fighting.

please don't type the word "hwaiting" in a non-esports related, non-BW community like facebook or something. I see some people do that and it makes you look really really stupid.

ive never really given any thoughts about why they use the word "hwaiting" instead of " fighting" but for me its just wrong so im using fighting unless someone tells me some cute story about that ,

He's not talking about taking words from another language but the next step. One language taking a word from a foreign language because it sounds cool, mispronouncing it and then it gets taken back by the people who the original word came from, but they take it back in the mispronounced form because it sounds cool.
If you meant that: english has a lot of those? Do you have some examples?

It means fighting, the Korean fans say it; this usually happens at the start of games to show support for players.

The /f/ and /v/ sound do not exist in Korean hence the pronunciation seems to be missing.
