Erm....I could see it as baked goods....but a vegetable? Seriously?
|
What..... The..... Fuckkk is going on..... My mind is blown now.
|
The thing is that public schools have to conform to standards about how many fruits/veggies/etc they serve per day, but they dont have the budget to buy real vegetables of quality that kids will actually consume. I'd rather have my tax dollars go to pizza for kids whose mothers are too lazy to pack a healthy lunch, than to lima beans that end up in the trash.
tricky situation
|
Pretty sure this is another case of the media running with the most ridiculous headline in order to drive up clicks/revenue. What they really said is "pizza has a serving of vegetables" not "pizza is a vegetable." Just like if I said "This soup has a serving of vegetables" it would be silly to say "are you crazy? soup isn't a vegetable, it's soup!"
|
well pizza is mostly cheese and bread so .............. hrm

After reading an article, the only change seems to be that instead of the tomato paste on pizza counting as half a serving of vegetables, it now counts as a whole serving.
|
This is completely false and misleading.
Pizza is not a vegetable.
What this new bill says is that two tablespoons of tomato paste is considered a vegetable. Currently it takes half a cup of tomato paste to count as a vegetable, which pizzas don't have.

WTF... if it doesn't grow it isn't a vegetable... WTFF WTFFF? Healthcare too expensive because of smokers, drinkers, and the obese... eat at list 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day... Eat at least 5 slices of pizza per day... healthcare too expensive because kids are fat... eat pizza more... soo fucking confused

If you ever wondered if lobbying was harming your country or if business has too much power over it, here's your answer.
This is retarded.

Sigh
Must be a really slow news day..

This is pretty much the interpretation to take.
There's a serious issue underlying (though definitely not news), about business interests buying congressional legislature through lobbying, but that doesn't make the headline in this case.
|
uhhhh. wat. pizza is a meal created out of many ingredients. Its like saying sushi is a meat.
|
pizza gets a bad rap. its really not THAT unhealthy (depending what you put on it). it does have some vegetables on it sometimes.
granted it itself is not a vegetable.
|
Didn't it have something to do with the amount of tomato on top of the pizza causing it to be qualified as good food or something, eitherway, if you follow the links around a bit you end up on this article which explains a bit better what's going on. Sadly it doesn't make it a less weird of a situation.
|
thats like saying a tomato is a fruit omfg
|
The article really has a ridiculous headline, but counting pizza as vegetables in a balanced meal because it has a little bit of tomato sauce is still ridiculous and makes no sense at all.
|
So in America, almost no one has vegetables in addition to their pizza. You don't have broccoli with your pizza. You might put some vegetables on as toppings, but you almost never see a side of veggies, except for occasionally a salad.
The law would have forced schools to serve vegies with pizza. Instead they are exempting pizza.
Basically this debate has less to do with whether pizza is a vegetable than it has to do with to what degree states or washington should be controlling what goes in school lunches.
Generally the North East and West Coast eat healthier diets (and vote for democrats) while the South in particular eats less healthy diets and vote republican, so what appears to be a partisan show down is more of a regional show down.
The southerners want the right to feed their children like southerners even if it is a little unhealthy.
|

This.
The background is that school lunches were supposed to have vegetables in them for health reasons, manufacturer's of frozen pizza feared loss of profits and successfully lobbied to make pizza count as vegetables.
(LOL at people rationalizing this)

I used to work in the US a could of years ago. When I asked if we could not go for something healthy instead of the usual grill and fries my coworkers suggested pizza. True story. Congress is just behind.
|
The bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. USDA had wanted to prevent that.
That would seem to be the crux of the bill.
To be quite honest, properly made tomato sauce is pretty healthy, and mostly consists of tomato.. Much of what is served on top of pizzas is made out of ridiculous amounts of sugar and various other additives, with relatively little tomato, and very very much not part of a healthy meal.
To me this screams of trying to save as much as possible on food, by using substandard ingredients and covering it up by adding sugar, fat and salt, etc.

Yeah, but nobody wants to read an article titled "Congress declares 2 tablespoons of tomato paste qualifies as a vegetable!"
|
If kids are wrong, don't tell them, just change the law(and the rules of the universe, while we're at it) so they're right.
But seriously?
I'm kind of disappointed by this... I mean, does that mean that Cheeze is now a vegetable? And Pepperoni?
If I ask for a vegetarian pizza in a restaurant, will they now tell me: All our pizzas are vegetarian now, you ignorant, what kind of pizza do you want?
...
Anyway, I guess I'll have a really easier time eating my 5 daily portions of vegetables, only need to eat 2-3pizza slices...
I mean, come on... -_-

And... you do understand that pizza and tomato sauce in pizza are full of salt, wich is pretty much the worst thing ever for your health and weight? Just saying...
And btw, even frozen pizza will now be counted as a serving of vegetables. You do understand how ridiculous this is, right?
|
This is actually pretty well unprecedented. Ronald Reagan already decided that ketchup was a vegetable. This is a natural progression which will culminate in the KFC doubledown sandwich being declared a fruit, and that eating 3-4 serving a day can prevent high blood pressure.
|
The amount of fats and cheese on pizza they serve in public school contradicts its vegetable classification. Unless the small amount of tomato sauce is qualifies as a healthy serving.
|
this is the least of our american cousins problems.....lol
|
Facepalming so hard right now.
How do I get a job as a lobbyist?
|
Who gives a shit?
How does this affect anyone in this thread enough to have any opinion on it?
|
Can a mod please just change title to read "US Congress declares pizza has a serving of vegetables"? What is the point of even having a thread if half of the posts are going to be based on a false premise... Any worthwhile discussion about lobbying influence or nutrition gets drowned out by 1000 posts of "lol they said pizza is a vegetable?"
|
America.. F*ck yeah!
Who are these ppl that declare such stuff? They cant be intelligent at all O.o How is it even possible that this is something politicians talk about?
|
Well, at least we got this settled instead of the other issues effecting the country. This was clearly a top priority.

For all the people wondering congress did this because the companies that provide school meals want them to. Tomato paste is much cheaper than actually serving vegetables that have to remain edible. It all about money they aren't stupid just greedy and bought.

99% of the vegetables are eaten by 1% of the school children
Occupy the healthy eaters (and feed them pizza)

Congress finally getting shit done!
@blackjack "Congress declares 2 tablespoons of tomato paste qualifies as a vegetable!"
Pretty sure this still qualifies as outrageous
|
Thanks American congress for this great info... OH wait are we so in debt its not even funny.. glad you can waste your time on making pizza a veggy... god I was always saying pizza must be a veggy ... as I sit with no food in the frig because I cant find a job... atleast we know pizza is a veggy tho SPEND that research money.. lol
|
well now you see why we have so many problems hajhahahah
|
is this real (life)?....
So funny.. wow.. truly amazing.
|
|
Didn't expect that many discussion already, as some people like blackjack stated the real issue there is how such a ridiculous and dangerous (it is dangerous for people who may not be as informed as others and will think that they don't need to eat tomatoes anymore if they eat a pizza instead) bill can be voted by the congress. It makes you wonder how many of such bills pass, be it in the USA or elsewhere, when it's so clear it was voted because of lobbies who don't give a **** about people's health, only about more money.

So when I have my 2 fruit and 5 veg I can now have pizza :D
|
Soup is always vegetables plus water, salt, some oil whatever so yeah soup is not a vegetable but it's 90% vegetables but of course you can make a fish or meat soup or even noodles for instance..
Pizza on the other hand is 80% cereal since the "bread" is the most important part of the pizza + cheese so it's not even a good health food.
|
u just got to adore those cutie pies from america <3
this seems more like an option in a parody of sim city or something.
"DECLARE PIZZA TO VEGETABLE" and somebody accidently clicked it and all school childrens get fat. damn.
I also love the reason: "significant amounts of potassium, vitamin a, c and fibre." yeah and like 70 grams of fat.
|
I think I'll order a small pizza slice, extra tomato sauce, and 2lb of wings for my lunch. Hey, I've got my serving of vegetables, if I get sick I'm going to sue the f*** out of everyone!

The point is neither is a vegetable and nobody has said either are a vegetable except for the idiots of the internet.

I think I'd make a great lobbyist. I can bullshit with some of the best. I'd just have a hard time living with myself for adding to the childhood obesity problem because I actually have a soul.
|
This time around, food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools, the salt industry and potato growers requested the changes and lobbied Congress.
Sometimes I don't understand how anything gets accomplished in America when lobbying is a legally accepted practice.
|
what the fuck
bread, cheese, and pepperoni are NOT vegetables.
So I guess Chicken Soup is a vegetable too since there's some other shit in there
|
Sounds ridiculous, but they probably mean one slice of pizza covers x amount of portion of your daily veggie intake. Something like that.
|

What's next? Z is pronounced "zee" and pretending they won the Vietnam War or War of 1812? Honestly, I'm not surprised. America is going to do what they want because they don't care about reality.

'Merican as fuck.
Only in this country would we put aside petty partisan differences to unite on not giving a fuck about health, and that is a glorious thing. Our waistlines are as big as our balls here. European countries would have dissolved their governments and started protesting by now

While I find this pretty funny. I don´t understand why the guy from the article was so outraged. Pizza is not unhealthy at all. Its basically Bread with tomato sauce. Just add a lot of vegetables, little meat, not much fatty cheese and its actually healthy and delicious.

Don't give a shit what law is passed, doesn't change the FACT that a pizza is NOT a vegetable.
I mean.. Nah, fuck it. It's just not a vegetable, no discussion required.

Your knowledge about healthy nutrition is very limited. (Frozen) pizza is fairly unhealthy when compared to the intended vegetable serving.

On November 18 2011 00:27 Diizzy wrote: thats like saying a tomato is a fruit omfg
You're kidding right? A tomato is a fruit, because it has seeds.
When I was in school, we just pretty much didn't classify pizza as any particular food group (or called it a "combination", like peanut butter and jelly), because it covered a little from a bunch of different food groups.
Pizza =/= vegetable. It's partially from the grains group (crust), partially from the fruit group (tomato sauce), and partially from the dairy group (cheese), but unless you have toppings, I don't see how any part of it is vegetable.

Can't get all your daily servings of healthy foods? Just re-classify everything so you can. Fuck yeah.
This just in:
We're also re-naming red M&Ms as grains, yellow M&Ms as dairy, blue M&Ms as fruit, green M&Ms as vegetables, and all other colored M&Ms as meat, because we fucking love meat.
In other words, one dollar a day at the local vending machine will keep you happy and healthy as can be!
+ Show Spoiler +Just don't go near those "doctor" people. They'll make up some story about your teeth rotting and your diet being terrible.

I thought pizza has always been classified as a vegetable because of the tomato sauce. Don't see why this is a big deal or shocking/upsetting. Lobbyists gonna lobby.
|
First, I thought I misunderstood the topic. So I started reading the article and thought after a few sentences "pizza lobby's force strong must be"
At any rate, you may still be wondering how it came to pass that Congress arrived at the conclusion that pizza could count as a serving of vegetables. Wonder no more! Congress was guided along this path by lobbyists. And lobbyists can do all sorts of things, by magic! (Except provide nutritious lunches for children.) And lol'd...
Common sense.. where are you? Well, actually it makes sense but considering pizza as vegetables.. really?.. -_-
