I completely agree with hitler about this situation, although I will not be canceling my preorder.

not to mention it ignores about a dozen or so other well made points in this thread the one regarding gender in particular is very hard to debate

I seriously doubt that official forums tech support are going to be a place where would-be rapists start their hunt. Or would-be phone call harassers. Or would-be anythings. It's absurd.

I find it odd that you guys dont remember (or know) about the time when Manifesto went missing and Rekrul called on teamliquid to find him. The result was a perfect example for why people would rather have their online and offline lives separate without the "scare mongering" that some people have been speaking of.

oh wow it didn't happen(as far as you know) on something awful. Clearly what has happened in the past with a small sample of girls on something awful represents what can possibly happen in the entirety of the future on blizzard's forums.
you are right though, it won't happen on blizzard's forums. because very very few girls are going to bother posting there anymore.

Sure, but it's not just rape, there's plenty of lesser ways people can harrass someone and make their life miserable. It's screwy that that's the the world we live in but that's the world we live in - as a woman if you're a gamer you stand out; and I don't think it's unreasonable to want the protection of an internet identity as some kind of a screen against that. Or at least to want the option.

The Manifesto thread, its actually somewhat touching that the community worried that much over a missing member.
A summary of what happened + Show Spoiler + one of Manifestos friends in rl (Rakrul) was concerned that he couldn't get in contact with Manifesto, who had recently moved to Japan, he suspected something had gone wrong, the community listened to his plea and found Manifesto, who it turned out was just swamped with work (kept him from posting for months) I think manifesto eventualy left TL because of his workload

The Canadian consulate was called.

Hey guys,
I've been reading your forums for a while now, without posting. But I decided to create an account to respond to this thread.
My real name is unique. There's noone else in this world that has my name. I can actually trace my family name back to the 1600s when it was first taken up.
A simple google search of my name can provide details of my email address, facebook account, universities of attendance, etc etc etc. All it takes is a disagreement on a forum, or some disturbed person with a mental disorder and a bad day to lead to a barrage of harassment that I simply will not be able to avoid.
I will never post under my real name on a blizzard forum. Similarly, although I have already preordered SC2, there's a good chance I will never purchase a blizzard game again, if they go through with this.

Anyway, nobody is being forced to do anything. If this experiment never takes place, the world doesn't have any answers...

yeah clearly things can't work as they are i mean look at TL. clearly this site is FUCKED and can't possibly make it!
(and this site doesn't even require you to have paid money to make an account, which bnet's forums do)

(and this site doesn't even require you to have paid money to make an account, which bnet's forums do) Yeah, TL has a large staff of people who apparently are ok spending a lot of their free-time surfing the forums, unpaid. This is hard for a company to pull off. Moreover, certain things are permissible on TL that would not be on the forums of a respectable for-profit gaming company (which caters to many, many people) --- swearing, Hitler videos, etc. Also, how do you think the hits on TL compare to the hits Blizzard gets? They release some of the most popular games in the world! Their forums get zilllllions of hits. Compare that explosive WoW thread to this one, and imagine how many more people read it than post in it...
Imagine modding all those posts!
You don't experiment with people's lives. LOL, melodramatically stated.
I think there is enough precedent to HYPOTHESIZE that this will not spell the end of any lives, physically, socially, emotionally, or otherwise. Look at alllllll the people who are already known by name on the Internet, in places both "safe" (TL?) and "dangerous" (Blizzard forums, apparently...).

A company that puts me in a position where my privacy is at risk doesn't deserve any money from me. Buying their products supports their actions and gives them the mandate to continue with it.
