I hate how widespread these practices are becoming, too. I was expecting (or at least hoping) Blizzard would stay out of that easy cash outlet out of some form of honor or respect for their customers, but as far as I can tell, they have every intention of going all in, selling personal information to whomever they please. Aren't they satisfied with the many hundreds of millions of dollars I'm sure they're getting out of WoW? I guess Activision is to blame for some, if not all, of this.

You do realize that when you make your battle.net account you put down your REAL NAME and e-mail address? So they could (and probably have) already executed your ingenious plan. So that concern is completely invalid. And how are you really going to blame Blizzard because some 14 year old posted idiotic drivel on their forums? The whole point of this move by Blizzard is to stop that type of stuff. What is a valid concern is that you don't want your name to appear a million times for battle.net forums when its googled.

Mr Brand said that one Blizzard employee posted his real name on the forums, saying that there was no risk to users, and the experiment went drastically wrong. "Within five minutes, users had got hold of his telephone number, home address, photographs of him and a ton of other information," said Mr Brand The post and topic has since been removed from the Blizzard forum.

If you have to answer to everything you write, you're going to think twice, which I think is great. Before you post, could you bother to at least read some of the thread? We already talked about accountability, it can be done without giving out your real information and putting you at risk, by say having moderators who can IP ban you or account ban you. (what an innovative idea, where have I seen it before?) If that is the only advantage posed by real-id then I will greatly take the "non-accountable" people (like say in this forum where we don't have to post our true name) over the risk I have to go through to be "accountable"

Yes every famous person on the planet complains about being harassed constantly, yes it blows no there simply isn't a way around it. You present your lives on a stage and sell your works, yes your going to get rabid fans who want to be just like you. Look at every single famous actor, athlete, or musician .. they all complain about this stuff.

Imagine if RL BECOMES the internet. That would be totally awesome. I can just imagine walking around seeing posters of cats everywhere and people going up to fast food joints saying "CAN I HAZ CHEEZEBURGER LOL". People rage quitting IRL throwing crap against walls. People randomly displaying videos of Rick Astley in random locations. Cmon guys tell me that wouldn't be totally awesome.

I dunno if this is all Activision, but who/whatever this comes from must be completely out of touch with reality.Optional facebook achievement integration, fine. Forced identity reveal & public email, totally f'ed up.

You are right, what you do in "the real world" has your name attached to it, but you'll notice that when you do something in the real world very few people get to see it, now if you post here probably hundreds will, if your real name is attached there are odds that there will be a psycho out there somewhere, also this wont encourage people to "act like decent human beings" it will encourage us not to post, so that potential employers can't stereotype us by simply making a quick google search Also you will notice famous people often have bodyguards, it guess that to protect themselves from "decent human beings" right? Giving out your name on the internet is almost as bright as writing your social security number on a bumper sticker and placing it on your car.

Wait till you piss off some psychopath and they find out your name and call an anonymous rape hotline or something worse. Its probably not gonna happen but if it does it can be a disaster, and anybody can be pissed at you for any reason at all (or even be pissed at someone else with the same name or handle or whatever). That cost versus Blizzard's economic gain. Which weighs more?

You present your lives on a stage and sell your works, yes your going to get rabid fans who want to be just like you. Look at every single famous actor, athlete, or musician .. they all complain about this stuff. Each place you go may require your name, and that's fine. Not many people here object to telling people their name. Here's the issue. If you read any of the thread you'd understand this. When you do that in real life each discrete packet of information or interaction is mostly separate. My friends know my name, but someone else who knows my name cannot listen to the conversations I had at the bar with those friends. My work knows my name, but others who know my name can't search through all my HR forms. The restaurant I just went to asked for my name on my reservation, but someone else can't search the restaurants books to find out when I was there. On the Internet, you can. These information sources are usually (and especially in the case of the Blizzard forums) public and therefore your name becomes a sort of decrypter ring. The more your name or any piece of personally identifiable information becomes attached to your transactions online, the easier it is for people to piece together larger and larger amounts of who you are. There are numerous harms that can come of that. Some are annoyances and minor, some are slightly more abusive, and some are extremely abusive. People aren't saying that sharing names = being murdered for BM. It's a possibility, but it's not likely. Some people just are not comfortable with the loss of privacy that's being needlessly put on users of the forum.
