But honestly, I'm still really proud of Best. That first game, the nigga didn't even have a forge done when the lings were out. Yet he still made a game of it. If he didn't get the 3rd gate+extra zeal, the cyber/cannon timing matches and July is stopped for the game. It hurt me so bad when I knew the spire was too fast. Ugh.
2nd game... Whatever, that cannon was so soooooo sosososososososososososososososo...
... sososososososososososososososososo close to done. FUCK.
3rd game... Whatever, fuck what people say, Andromeda is gonna become a Zerg map. -_-;;
And the more I think about it... July's preparation for the finals was sooooo sick. I would bet my life that no protoss was ever gonna beat July this final. There is a reason why the guy never lost a bo5 to toss.
FUCKN.. PVZ IMBA.
You can't deny July his moment =( Best ran soooooooo disgustingly bad. It's ok though. Fuck people crying about "in-form" Bisu being best PvZ etc... Best is gonna become the best PvP PvT PvZ that has ever existed. Truth.
Are you talking about the cannon on top by the gas/min. He could have defended it if he predicted july's movements. The reason he had late rection was cus july faked gateway surround. That was so sexy.

I'm a Julyzerg fan boy and all that, but I can't be the only person who thought both players played below their level.
July's drone drill in g2 was nice, but in each game it seemed like he could've done more, at least decision making wise, and ended the game earlier. Maybe we've just been spoiled by Jaedong, but I thought the games were kinda lame.
Neither player played like a top 3 ZvP/PvZ imo.

if you play zerg, you'll get goose bump seeing the whole serie.

What is with everyone in this thread? Goose bumps?
I felt sick after watching July's guardians shooting dragoons while Best stupidly lead his army with 4 Templars. Or the mini stock piles of idle drones. Or the lings failing to end the game in 5 minutes. Somebody else had to be yelling "GET THE FORGE, MOTHERFUCKER" in g1.
We're supposed to get goose bumps because Best leads a full army without observers (when the Observatory was completed for quite a while) and gets roadblocked by 3 lurkers? Man, I wish I knew how to do that!
Or the completely pointless early ling/hydra play in g3? His ling sees Best's cannon setup and then he decides to suicide a few hydras against the exact same defense, no changes at all. Best's corsair control was closer to 1987 Bisu than 2007 Bisu, but if it were there July would've been in trouble at that point. I've never seen a P lose midgame air control after having 5 corsairs until today.
I know you all love nostalgia, but be honest with yourselves. Best played like Rock and July made it through because he owns the fuck outta Rock. It was not the stuff of legends.

That bisu snapshop was too priceless.

Flash cheesing Bisu -> Everybody went apeshit.
July fucking us out of a good final -> He is a genius.
What gets me the most is that he showed in game 3 that it could have been one epic fucking final instead of this bullcrap.
Congratz on the golden mouse though!

Agreed. There was nothing legendary about these games, which is very disappointing considering it's the finals of the most prestigious (IMO) tournament in SK. 5pool isn't an ingenious BoxeR like strategy... It's the type of strategy you'd expect from someone lacking confidence because they didn't have enough time to practice, or because they thought their opponent was better than them and they needed to get lucky. It wasn't the case here, but it was disappointing to see any game with this much on the line end so quickly and straight forwardly. If positions had screwed July it would have been equally painful to watch.
That's not to say it wasn't entertaining at all, I'm just saying it's not even close to the best StarCraft I've ever seen played. For finals, I like epic games, with back and forth lead changes that make it look like both players actually deserve to be there, and have earned the right to call themselves the best of the best. I like gutsy and original strategies, and I like to see them pushed to their limit. What I got was a 3-0 sweep where July barely broke a sweat.

5 pool on Set 1 of a Bo5 indicates that a player has an alternate strategy prepared should the match go to 5 games. July most likely did not wish to reveal his strategy for the last set and prepped a cheese.
So when Boxer cheesed Yellow 3 times in a row, he lacked confidence?

You'll here more about my opinions on the finals within the coming day but this was a legendary final. July played like a champ, and Best played like he was still in the round of 16. July's preparation was perfect and spot on, and he knew what he needed to do to win. The andromeda game was amazing. Sure there were fuckups along the way, but there are things like that which are forgivable in a final. July strategy that game is perhaps the first new ZvP thing i've seen in years. I've seen a shitload of Sair/Reaver ZvP but i've never seen scourge/hydra -> guardian/hydra/ling to counter it. It was brilliant, and will be the birth of a new anti-sair/reaver im sure.

To put it shortly, it's because BeSt sucked vs. July.
On to your other points, though -- why are people saying that 5pool is not a legitimate strategy? July said himself during an interview that a lot of the game has to do with nerves and that was why he prepared such strategies, not because he lacked confidence.
"Disappointing to see any game with this much on the line end so quickly" -- what are you expecting, some sort of "no rush 20 minutes" in which both players take half the map without major battles and drag on the game for 2 hours just to appease people who want more action?
"Oh wait, don't attack me yet, I need to pull off 5 simultaneous storms on your carefully positioned guardians."
"Oh shoot, I took the lead for too long -- here take some free drone kills."
Players play to win, not to show off their muta-stacking control or macro-prowess. The only epic games you'll get are the ones played by great players. July was great -- BeSt was not, hence the perhaps lackluster games 1 and 2.
Oh, and I agree 200% with those of you saying that July and BeSt sucked ass. July should have totally gone straight for the unguarded forge at BeSt's nat in order to give time for the couple of cannons to go up in his main. Everyone knows that without a forge, a warping cannon becomes disabled!
And the ling/hydra play in g3 -- July was totally not trying to fake an attack into BeSt's nat and forcing him to bring his corsairs and reavers back.

lol, funny analogy, but still incorrect
With so much on the line, I would play my best hand, not necessarily the one that drags on the game and produces "epic" (i.e. by your definition "no rush 20 minutes") games.

If you want to say someone took a good final away from us it was Best. He defended the rush in the first game and still lost in the next 5 minutes. July did exactly what should be done, he tried to win the games by any means necessary(short of cheating). You aren't granted a mid/late game simply for showing up, theres a reason you don't start the game with 10 workers and 1000 minerals.

I seriously couldn't LOL harder at haxxorized right now, omg...
You guys should have been in IRC like 2 hours before the games if you weren't there, hahaha Wizard knows this.
About the games: OMG. July was freaking fantastic. Unreal game-sense, absolutely astonishing. Julyzerg is seriously the most successful player of all time in my book. To win titles across a span of years is so amazing, to have a skill level that transcends time. His unique style of play was showcased here, but more than that, his timing is impossible to copy. He knows all the right times to move in and did so flawlessly.
I seriously thought he was going down for a couple of moments in Game 3, but sure enough, he pulls through. His micro, macro, timing, sense, are straight-up PERFECT versus Protoss. There is no arguing now, no debate. July's PvZ is unstoppable and the stars definitely aligned for him this OSL, giving him all the Protoss McDonald's Zerg could munch, freaking Pac-Man 2008
I'm so happy right now
|
My last point:
I'm glad July showed the new generation that good micro and early game sense DOMINATE macro-based play.
Game 3 was a remarkable ending to a great final. July had the answer to modern day PvZ, he is the cross-generational ZvP god.
