Also why BW is uniquely placed in how heavily maps play a role.

You also have to take into account balance issues. It's fun for viewers to watch one or two games where you can see unique strategies or units that have never been used, but it's not fair for players if such maps have 75/25 win ratio. If you keep that for long terms, then games on such maps will actually end up with one race cheesing the other to get the game end asap.

Multiple editions of a map can be made. Even deeper though, the issue with pros having so much say in these things is that they're often not there to have fun. Or rather, it doesn't seem like the highest priority. Historically, it's all about predictability and comfort zones. What feels good for a pro is ultimately pretty bad for casuals and spectators, or essentially people there to enjoy themselves. Some really great data will be had when pros actually quite like a weird map, bonus points if it isn't perfectly balanced. Then we can start to mine why that is and actually find some kind of equilibrium between what's fun and what the pros will accept. I personally have always found it quite frustrating how inflexible pros can be when it comes to this stuff, and would love to see it change. Of course, when the big tournament decrees that you must play on weird maps, it's a nice little dose of central planning that cuts out the middle man and all is well.
