Agreed! This is really fun

One thing which would be pretty cool would be double elimination (losers bracket).. It would allow more better longevity and more importantly more games

What's more important than double elimination is making sure all 32 people show up for group stage. Solving that problem would almost double the amount of games played this season. Out of 8 groups, only group C and group G had all 4 people show up, whereas group B and group H, only 2 people showed up. That needs to be solved first and foremost.

My games vs Sentenal have been played.

+ Show Spoiler [Results/Synopsis] +

Sentenal 3 - 0 sGs.LMaster

Shitty games from my side. T_T

G1 - He went 4 gate, I went 2 gate reaver. Held the 4 gate okay, moved out, promptly got shuttle sniped. Then just generally played horrible from there. Pretty sure I lost like 3+ shuttle/reavers that game, just got a new mouse a few days ago after the old one died and just have no feel or micro. It was so bad I lost a reaver and shuttle to one cannon =(

G2 - I went core first, he went 2 gate. Beautifully managed to miss my second pylon by shift clicking and letting go of shift too soon. 1 Zealot v 5 doesnt work so well. \

G3 - Same situation as G2, only remember pylon. Still micro-ed like shit and quickly died.

A nasty combination of inability to micro + generally bad play = quick 3-0 in Sentenals favor.

I'm planning on casting this (Ro8) tomorrow, and I'll get it calendared and update when I have an official time.

Okay also time to start talking about next season:

I was thinking some changes:

Maps decided by polls again, seems better. I was thinking to have pre-decided maps for each stage of the tournament, not only group stages. I am trying to find a format that allows players to play more games. The problem with round robin is that if 1 player doesn' t show, only 3 games are played. If 2 don' t show, only 1 game is played; so its not so optimal.

So here is my idea: instead of sorting and seeding into groups directly, there will be a preliminary stage: based on your ELO D ranks points, from Birdie http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=368754 there will be a 5 game long swiss round with every 32 players in one group. what is swiss round? + Show Spoiler +
Players play against the player closest of rank to them. Meaning for example, if Shuruken, Babo, Prophecy and psyonic reaver sign up, the first first and second play each other and the third and fourth play each other. After that, the 2 players who won play each other and the losers play each other. Since there will be 32 players in one group, 16 will be tied at 1 win and 16 at 1 loss after the first round. ELO points again will determinate who plays vs who

The results of the swiss round will then put ALL the players into the group stages. This way it will be possible to cut througt people that don' t show and group stages will be fuller. Or it could be that the top players of the swiss round get seeded directly into the RO16. That would require proper planning to make it balanced as for the number of players being seeded. In any case i am open to new ideas.

This way people will play vs players of supposily their skill, the tournament will last longer (two months)

Thoughts?

The swiss round system seems confusing. I see there are different implementations, but you're saying that the matchmaking should be based only on elo, rather than wins? Wouldn't that punish high ranked players? For instance, let's say Psyonic Reaver gets to play Babo, Prophecy, Artanis, Obelisco and Essbee, and then ends up with a 2-3 score or something, while a lower ranked player would only play against other lower ranked players, and ends up with a 4-1 score.

Shouldn't you instead play the player who have the score that is the closest to yours? And only when several players have the same score, you go by elo rank.

I kind of like the round robin system though. It's definately better than the old 2-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-2 system, because you know who you're playing, so you can reschedule. Maybe you could make it into groups of 6 or 8 instead, if you want to extent the group stages. The advantage of the swiss round system seems to be that you don't really need a min/max amount of players. One major problem though is that if a match gets delayed, it will affect everybody, because all games needs to be played before the next round can be announced. How would you deal with that? Would you enforce some game deadline?

I'm in favor of predetermined map instead of loser pick system. OSL and MSL had predetermined map, and it should help people prepare more since they don't have to practice on all the maps in the pool.
I like the round robin system. I think it can work if you allow rescheduling

Yeah in fact that just occured to me. The reason why i made it losers pick in the first place was to give the upper hand to more feeble players. But then again if they win that match then the other guy picks. Anyway its nice to have a change.

@ninini you got exactly the point but missed the system. Maybe i explained myself poorly. IT would be players playing each other based on results. ONLY the first round to start off, would be based on the ELO points. The first match.

So yeah it basically works like you sugjested: you play the player who has the score that is the closest to yours And only when several players have the same score, you go by elo rank. So basically if obelisco wins vs babo, next round babo would probably face the loser of say psyonic reaver vs essbee. Because they would be both at 0-1 and probly have the highest ELO score. The guy who loses again that game, at that point, would play versus a another player near top rank, that has as him gone 0-2. If he loses again, he is 0-3, and would most defenetevly go vs a middle rank player.(the highest player with ELO ranking at 0-3).

So this system favores players near each others skill level to play.At least in the first 2, 3 rounds.

Another way to make it more variable and more of a gamble, is to have best of 3' s for example in each round.

Even more extreme could be to have each 1v1 be 3 games. So players could go for example 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-3. In this case it is even more of a gamble to know versus what skill level you will play. And also people could lose/drop a game if they Postpone their match, knowing the results of others. One way to deal with this would be not having results out until everybody played.

And if this system is used, good point ninini there has to be some deadline because matches need to be played. Yes i will enforce it. Even penalize it maybe, giving them not only no wins but even some losses maybe. Need to think this one out.

Keep them thoughts coming,
