Today I am proud to be announcing Ribbon's Mirror Tournaments, a conglomeration of appropriately titled niche tours of which I was given the opportunity to host by the sponsor of the most viewed exclusively foreign event since TSL2, or possibly in history. I must say, they possess a unique element and format individually, but I do encourage all to not only watch and enjoy these tournaments, but pay attention to them as they progress. Spoiler? Possibly.
The first up is very simple, yet provides intricate possibilities. What if I told you that ZvZ didn't have to contain mutalisks? Think about how the entire BW metagame would be altered far more drastically than raising the cost of spawning pools by 50 minerals as I explain the format, players whom you'll be privied in watching, and particular aesthetics such as casters.
* No Spires * 16 Players * Single Elimination * Best of 3 Rounds * Best of 5 Semi-Finals * Best of 3 Third and Fourth Placement Match * Best of 7 Finals
All games will be played starting Saturday, September 8th at 19CET on Fish server. The cast will take place Sunday, Setember 9th beginning at 17CET at Hacklebeast's channel
There are currently 9 invitations, with an additional player who makes a total of 10, whom is on reserve. With that, we thought it would be the best idea to not only let the community interact with the players they get to praise and watch regularly in the game they love to play, but to offer an element of surprise and shock. That means that there are12 available slots of registration open to the public. Seven of those will be directly thrown into the mix, and five will be put on a reserve list with the one reserved invited player. The selection of registrants will be randomized to see who will be guaranteed an opportunity. However, do not be discouraged, there will always be a no show or two, or three and the list of reserves will be put to good use upon attendance of the event.
To register, you must be a naturalized or past Zerg player. Simply send an e-mail to RibbonsMirror@gmail.com with a list of your two most known aliases and the country you represent.

* Do not build a spire. Actually, if you decide to, just don't let it finish. You'll automatically lose the game since it will put you so far behind anyway.

* All games must be played on Fish Server using Mini-Launcher or ChaosLauncher.

* WalkOvers for entire sets will be based on a 7 minute timer. For a best of 3, 21 minutes. Best of 5, 35 minutes, etc.

I encourage all those whom wish to participate to register as soon as possible in order to have all merits awarded with ample time before the play date.
Oh wow, very interesting tournament and thought behind this, I will be very interested to see how it goes, I would love to play ZvZ with no spire actually and my Zerg was max rank of like C but I in no way compare to these Zergs, and it says to be a naturalized or past zerg player so....GL to all the awesome zergies, really interested to see how Szisky plays without a spire, and I think michael will show some interesting strategies because he tends to do so, gl hf !

I was going to say that in a perfect world we'd see Baku vs Pike, Sziky vs Michael, and the winner of the previous vs trutaCz. However, those are all primed mutalisk involved ZvZ players. I couldn't predict a winner of this tournament if I tried, hence the open registration.

The rules make zerglings a lot stronger than they normally are, and sziky is participating. It's certainly a volatile format, but I don't see how sziky playing as zerg isn't the favorite in any foreigner competition.

Have you ever seen Michael hydra bust or TechnicS turtle?
Out of town. Any gosu Zerg player you see missing was most likely previously going to play this tournament. I had to postpone it contingent on real life hindrances and these are the re-confirmed players. Only one player who didn't re-confirm didn't respond, the rest had valid reasons for not participating, from traveling to family weddings.
pretty sure I've seen Michael hydra bust zvz, certainly seen Technics turtle. Again, it's not a forgone conclusion. But given the option between sziky lings and X, where X is a thing in starcraft, i'm taking those damn lings.

Here's a question though: "No Spire" is a solid constraint, its quite clear and people can follow that. But it prevents you from getting air armour (for Ovies and Queens), plus Guardians and Devourers. I can see the reason for no Guardians (eat Hydras alive).
Not that I have much experience in these matters, but wouldn't it be ~a bad thing~ to ban air armour?

I disagree, if someone makes 1 lurker, Sziky lings is a moot point.

I agree. There will be a lot of lurkers and pre-lurker timings
I think Greater Spire should be allowed or, as quirinus said, only ban mutas. Guardians and Devourers should be allowed ^^ So if you make mutas, you're not allowed to attack with them until you morph them into Guardians or Devourers.
But regardless of that, I'm pretty sure it will still be a super fun tournament!

I don't think this will work. Your opponent can fly overlords into the mutas to make them attack, and you will be disqualified. If you say you mustn't deliberately make your opponent's mutas attack, then there will be drama about whether that guy was deliberately attacking that overlord, or whether that overlord was accidentally flying into the hidden mutas, or if he deliberately did it. Also, "no spire" is catchier.

Semi-agree.
Don't want to go back and quote the posts about greater spire or anything, but this is what the sponsor wanted and it's a very solid concept, as were his other tournaments.
Edit: What I mean is, it's definitely something to think about in the future.

Reason it's Game, all the Reason for playing Games on Fish have been awesomed-to-death, and always lead to angry sidetracks of threads, on topics that don't need to be revisited since they're unfruitful and explosive.
I'm really excited about this tourney. If there was ever an offrace matchup I picked, it was always ZvZ, with the sole intent of perfecting my +1 attack timing bust before muta. Sadly, it was an auto-loss to hatch-first, or players who were better than me, but I'm still excited to see it happen.
Is this a good venue to suggest and theorycraft wacky ZvZ builds? Oh, please!

No Tanks, No Dragoons.
lol better yet, no factory TvT.
EDIT: well you can build one but you can't make units out of it
I was going to make it a secret, but I guess it's honestly pretty obvious. Only one factory at a time, and I'm leaning towards allowing you to use the one factory. The PvP one I'm kind of vacillating on.
PvP no forge? Also, find a way to favour Shied Battery XD
Theorycrafting time! I was discussing this a bit with Blind, and my two cents are:
Actually I think it'll be played like post-mutas ZvT, with Lurkers to hold ramps and rushing to Dark Swarm for Ultra Ling. Mass hydra armies will be quite strong, but Dark Swarm (both offensive and defensive) nullify them, hence mele. Not to mention how a Plague + Ensnare combo would wreck Hydra clumps. Get ready to see sick Stop Lurkers! Pity Guardians won't be available, meaning the only thing to break Lurker entrenchments would be mass Broodling. Better start practicing Queen Cloning ^^
Are scourge allowed? Without, Ovies would be safer, but Queens could run away forever.

No spire means no spire. Rather difficult to get scourge without one.

Everybody should just use fold's ZvZ hydra build!
Also for TvT and PvP:
TvT: Bio Only TvT -Facs can be built but no unit -Only dropships can be built from starports
PvP: No Goons -No goons -Would be amazing because of mass zealots slashing and awesome robo/templar battles
The cast time has been officially changed to Sunday, September 9th beginning at 16CET. We'd like to give you guys something great to watch as individual parties, but also the gosu players while they wait to play their Gambit's Cup matches.

So yeah, what's so good about Fish server and why are people playing there?

Indeed, it's just a better place to play in general. There is no community, as those develop on their own and can't be implemented by the server.

Sorry to play with anyone's emotions, but we're changing it again. Now that hacklebeast is available to cast at a more primed hour after his release of obligations to Gambit's Cup, the cast will now begin one the same day, Sunday, September 9th at 17CET.

Bio is good against wraiths (and battlecruisers, although they have high armor), but no one uses it because it dies to tanks.
I actually wonder if bio is good vs bcs. I imagine they are a lot like ultras with the armor upgrade already bought. The have more health, can't be irradiated, have range, stack better and can't be blocked by medics. But on the other hand a lot more expediencies, and a lot slower so you can't get them out of a bad situation, or defend harass very well. Would be interesting.

Irradiate/dmatrix an scv and send it over bio while the other bc's shoot at the bio. OHMUHGAH

Seriously though, without Tanks and mines, mass bio+lockdown would really work! Anyone who says different, don't do so witout challenging me to a bo9 TvT to let me prove my point (or that I just really want a TvT practice partner). Also, optical flare on the Science Vessels, then sneak the ghosts in under the BCs < :

If factory is banned, you pretty much have to go bio because there would be no other way to spend your minerals. That would mean that you could spend your gas on: ghosts, battlecruisers/wraiths, or science vessels (I'm excluding special-purpose units).
If you want to be boring and have low apm you'd probably be best off with medic+marine and bcs/wraiths.
If your opponent has a lot of bio or ghosts you could go vessels, since EMP and irradiate are strong. You could defense matrix one of their medics (which your units won't target automatically) and irradiate it. They can't kill the medic because it's defense matrixed so they would have to split their army and try to move it away. To counter this, your opponent could either use restoration or have a dropship next to their bio army to pick up irradiated units (to save some research costs). You could also defense matrix and irradiate one of your flying units and use it to eraser the marines but that seems like it wouldn't work.
If you're fighting BCs with marines, defense matrix seems like it would be strong. Since the D-matrixed marine is usually in front, you don't have to worry as much about irradiate being used on it.
Ghosts have higher range than range-upgraded marines, so they might be useful in a large bio army. Also, your opponent might not notice cloaked ghosts in a marine army so they should be pretty durable. If you have no army and your opponent has BCs, you could go mass ghosts + nukes, lock down thier army, and nuke it. Normally you would need wraiths to kill locked down BCs; I'm not sure if bio has enough DPS.
Optical flare wouldn't really do much to vessels because Terran still has scan.
Also, if one terran transitions from bio to bcs, they probably won't have 3/3 air upgrades yet (whereas their bio should be 3/3 assuming they didn't go mass wraiths early) so that would create a timing where bio is good against bcs.
I would like to appeal a decision that was made to today concerning my matches against Technics, which I won 2-1, but was walked over for. Technics repeatedly paused our games during the matches, and in between games, was very bad manner towards me personally. While I don't mind the bad manner, I do mind this decision, which I feel should be reversed because there are no official rules concerning in-game pauses. Also, all of the pauses were done at important moments in the match, which made it difficult for me to concentrate. I sincerely hope you do the right and fair thing, and give me the win over Technics 2-1. P.S.: He paused the game with no pp beforehand. Just paused the game.
