I was curious about the same thing. I've seen a lot of pro players not use it, when I had thought for awhile it was just a standard thing to do... But only used for certain situations?

from my experience, using the extractor trick during a 12 hatch 11 pool build is about the same thing as not using it. your 10th drone pops a little bit faster, but at the loss of ~10 minerals or so? it evens out i think, at least for that build.

at the cost of 13 minerals i think, so if the 10th drone manages to mine twice before your 11th drone finishes you made a profit of 3 minerals, and if it only returns once then you made a loss of 5 minerals -_- i only really do the trick if i 9 pool or hatch before overlord

I always use extractor trick if I'm going 9 pool 3 hatch.

It doesn't delay any zergling timing, and generally, it's much more useful.

Only if 9 hatch or 9 pool without fast gas for speedlings. If you're doing it after 9 overlord in a 12 pool or 12 hatch build you're losing minerals.

In the no gas 9 pool build, the extractor trick is useful.
9 pool
8 drone
9 extractor trick
10/9 overlord

Also, there are tons of variations of 10 hat 9 pool or 10 hat 10 pool that use the extractor trick

Don't bother with the extractor trick if you're not going to do a 10/9 build or a 9 pool - the overlord is only 4 mins less and that's assuming you do it PERFECTLY. The lost mining time on your trick drone evens it out. 9 ol 12 pool or 9 ol 12 hat is better without the trick.

And by that Midian means to say that the marginal difference that it technically makes is virtually nil. Do it if you want to look cool.

Virtually nil in the same sense as splitting your workers badly, a few minerals slower than the optimal way. I think you have to add at least one trip for the worker who made the extractor too, making the difference 13 minerals. Not exactly gamebreaking and why bother?

In the situations where you're making an overlord late because of 9 pool or 9 hatch it makes sense. There you actually gain a drone that will be mining all game that you wouldn't otherwise have had because you would have lost that larva. With 12 hatch or 12 pool you're just getting that drone a tiny bit faster in exchange for 2-3 trips worth of minerals which he won't make back in time ^^;

one of my favorite builds in ZvP

extractor trick on 9
overlord on 10
pool on 10
drone to 11
expo on 11
3 sets of lings and ling away

(my preferred variation from here on out)
gas around 15-17 and lair once you have 100 gas

this is most effective on really close maps such as Requiem or paranoid androide where 2 gate zealot rushes are very threatening vs early expansion. This build provides enough lings to hold this off, lings quickly enough to put pressure on an early expand, and the option for extremely quick mutalisks (oftentimes very effective if a protoss has made too many zealots)

(other than that i almost never do it)

I just did a little experiment. It's not wholly conclusive, since I only did each version once.
I did this on Gaia.

With Extractor Trick:
9 Extractor Trick
10 Pool - 1:17
9 Extractor Trick
10 Hatch - 1:56
9 Overlord - 2:03
9 Zerglings - 2:30

Without Extractor Trick:
9 Overlord - 1:00
9 Pool - 1:23
9 Hatch - 2:01
8 Zerglings - 2:15

I think for anything conclusive a few people would have to do both on few maps, as well as different and same start locations on those maps. Then we could see if there really is much difference in terms of speed. Also, there are obvious variations in drone count, and order of execution, I'm sure that could have an effect as well.

You also need to factor in the loss of the Drone's mining time when you pull him from minerals to morph and cancel an Extractor.

The Extractor Trick generally isn't profitable mineral-wise. However, in builds where you don't plan on getting a second Hatchery for a while, or when you plan to delay your overlord significantly, you've got larva spawn to consider. It's best not to have your Hatchery sitting at 3 larva because that's like an unglowing CC, so in certain builds doing the trick can be like slipping some fraction of a Drone in for free.

Oh, and before anybody mentions it, I'll say that Extractor + Creep Colony trick for two extra drones is most definitely not worth it ever. But it did look pretty damn fancy 4 years ago.

One helluva point for the extractor trick is that it heals your drone!

Extractor trick to heal a drone is actually useful to chase an SCV away when you want to place a Hatchery in a far-away corner of the map.

You usually have to do it twice though because SCV attack cooldown is so superior.

Thats what i want to see in the next pimpest plays, someone taking like 4 drones in terrans base very early game for harrassment, and continues to extractor heal and takes out most of the base, and some how takes out marines while healing. That would be pretty cool. Drone rushed. probably would never happen and it would have to be before 1 or 2 marines pop out.

Pimpest plays are supposed to be GOOD games, not retarded ideas that should be stopped by the terran placing a refinery and/or playing semi-decently.

WRONG... pimpest plays is about pimp plays, period

for example like how the protoss built gates in terrans base.. then terran floated over to protoss base and sealed exit for the win!
