when zerglings attempt a run-by by focusing on the blocking probe, my probe will run away if attacked. How do I keep him from doing this and staying still? sucks to lose like that

Select the probe and a zealot (or any other unit) at the same time, and the probe will use the zealot’s hold position command. You can move the zealot immediately after, and the probe will stay there. If you don’t have a zealot yet you just have to block without hold position by telling it to attack, spamming s, or right clicking.

*whistle* my mind is blown. I didn't know that would give the command to the probe. amazing!! thank you.

What do you guys do to get in the habit of constantly checking the mini map? Any tips on how you got better at mini map awareness? Just wondering what your approach was because I am having a hard time building maps awareness even after hundreds of games. Thanks.

literally nothing else to it but trying to look more often. if youre unable to look at the minimap then it simply means youre too focused on trying to do everything else. its easier to start focusing on the minimap when everything else youre doing can be done like second nature so just focus on getting your basics down and being able to do it "in your sleep"

it wasn't a deliberate method of practicing for me, but I played without sound for a pretty long period of time during the early years of bw and noticed that it really helped quite a bit - I've always had good minimap awareness after that.

Play more zerg, it requires constants map awareness (when flying around with mutas, when getting dropships/shuttles, when leaving single lings all over the map). In general, zerg units die very fast when left unnoticed so you quickly get punished for not looking at the minimap.

I just watched the nony vs jaeyun analysis by day 9 and I saw a bunch of reavers die. To be effective with reavers so they don't all shoot the same target, do you guys manually control each one?

Also, is there a sure fire way to keep reavers from going in range of lurkers and sunkens? Because no matter what I do (a move or right click) the damn reaver goes in range. Please assist.

Edit : another question. If I go forge fe versus zerg and I make a cannon, but he did hatch first and I'm in no danger,is it okay to cancel the cannon and go nexus? Or do I take too much of a mineral hit by canceling?

Pre ling speed, what is the ratio of ling to marines needed to fend off a marine attack [no medic]? I know sunkens would be preferable, but just for kicks.

Depends on the number of marines, more marines need a higher ratio. 6 lings should kill 4 marines, but 12 lings probably won't kill 8 marines.

Exactly, all depends on positioning of marines and lings. I would say 12 lings can kill 8 lings same as 24 lings can kill 16 marines - as long as the flank is perfect and all lings attack at the same time. But on the other hand, 12 marines on the ramp is probably enough to kill 40 lings.. So there is basically no rule.

I was asking in a general way in order to get an idea of how many lings should keep me in my base at x marine count, obviously circumstances change but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to convey an answer. I’m asking for a heuristic.

6-12 lings is max before your initial 11 mutas.

it's been a while since I played/watched bw, so I forgot why zerg needs fewer drones per base than terran or protoss. Can anyone explain why?

The answer to this can be extrapolated from the conversation above the question, actually. Kind of ironic.

The cost of 6 Zerglings is 150 minerals, and the cost of 4 Marines is 200 minerals. (Ignoring the factor of upgrades obviously.)

Zerg are not required to build as many buildings compared to Terran and Protoss, as well. The Hatchery acts as the only production building. So think about that, then think about Terran having to build 6 Barracks, a Starport, switching to "mech" army comp and then having to build just as many (or more) factories.

I read it, but it doesn't exactly answer my question. Yes, Zerg needs fewer structures, etc. But why is it that they can have fewer workers per base and still have the same level of economy as Protoss or Terran? If they had more drones per base, wouldn't their economy be even better?

My best guess is that Zerg has more bases, so having the same number of drones but spread out is more efficient than having a lot in one base (due to diminishing returns). If that's the case, then I may have remembered correctly. If not, then what is it?

its like you said in your second paragraph. Yes if they had more drones per base ofc their economy would be even better. The thing is that a hatchery costing 300mineral, is also the only production building that Z can make, and produce at max rate of "1 drone building time = +1 larva". They have to include any building they make and overlords too in the production line of these hatches. So it costs quite a bit for Z to produce, that's why they can't make so many drones so easily (without having too weak defense or offense) and rather would add bases while economy grows and spread drones..

1. Is there a technique to keep reavers out of the range of sunkens and lurkers? A-click and A-move does not keep me at max range. My reavers get far too close. Does right click work better or is it all the same?

2. If I go forge fe versus zerg and I make a cannon, but he did hatch first and lings are a long way off, is it okay to cancel the cannon and go nexus? The penalty for canceling is worth paying right?

3. Playing with mini-map blacked out to only show the enemy, does this help with map awareness? Is there a situation you turn this on or do you just get along fine with the normal setting?

1) In one of the translated Stork vods he says something about bottom right causing reavers to bugout (in the context of proxy reaver vs 12 nex -> cannons pvp), so maybe it has something to do with the angle of attack? I'd be interested in the bwapi people trying to figure this out.

2) Yes

3) Some people like it, but it's all personal preference. I'd recommend shift+tab for teal/red colors though since reds usually more visible on the minimap for most people.
