Hi,
My friend ( who is by the way registred at tl.net but can't post because of "10 day rule" ), can't install Starcraft : Brood War.
Anyway, he just bought original - clean and working CD's, but at the end of each installation he gets this error :
Setup was unable to create the following link: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Starcraft\Uninstall Starcraft.lnk Error 0x000036B7: The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context. (C:\Files\Installer\setup\LinkUndo.cpp:179)
We tried cleaning registry with Registry mechanic, we tryed to clean registry keys and reinstalling Starcraft for 10 times but that error just seems to be coming up.
Anyone has any tips on how to solve this one? Thanks!

Sounds like your computer is having issues with extensions...Starcraft.ink, would be the Shortcut for it. Maybe check to see if your file extensions got fubar somehow?

Is there an "Add Shortcuts to Startmenu" option in the SC-Setup which you can uncheck? Probably some part of COM is damged, which is something where a user probably cant do anything, except reinstalling Windows. You could copy a complete SC-Installation from another computer.

Yeah, I would defiantly just re-install Windows, you can just install Windows over itself and keep your data etc.

To get autorun to work, run regedit and set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Starcraft\InstallPath to the SC directory (c:\Starcraft\ or whatever).
It does sound like something is seriously screwy though, so reinstall Windows if you can.

You could try downloading the iso's off the internet incase the cd is malfunctional.
I did a google search, when you hit that error, ctrl+alt+del and kill the installer process. Up until that point everything should have installed properly and chances are you wont need uninstall.lnk.

I think he would need the real iso's to install from, that is just a mini iso to use as a no-cd.

Hey, I'm also having a problem with installing SC. I, too, can't start a thread because of the 10 day rule.
Im trying to install StarCraft on this PC, but it doesn't seem to work. At first, Install.exe or Setup.exe wouldn't even run. I turned off all antiviruses, and for some reason it worked. However, during the installation, it stops at StarDat.mpq. The top installation bar gets four squares, and the bottom one gets six - it dosen't go further. I thogutht hat maybe the computer is having trouble reading it, so I left it on overnight. It hasn't moved.
I would prefer not to go buy another copy, no matter how cheap it is.
What I know: - CD is not the problem - CD is clean - all antiviruses off help, but do not fix the problem - running it in windows 98/ME compatibility mode dosen't change anything
Any ideas?
I've been looking around for a while and it seems this problem is very common. Nobody ever gets an answer, though. I figured I'd ask here. If you guys don't know the answer - nobody will!

I've been looking around for a while and it seems this problem is very common. Nobody ever gets an answer, though. I figured I'd ask here. If you guys don't know the answer - nobody will! Only 10 different files are needed for BW running They are : + Show Spoiler +StarDat.mpq BrooDat.mpq Smackw32.dll Riched20.dll Local.dll
StarCraft.exe storm.dll patch_rt.mpq battle.snp
install.exe Just insure these files are already on your Starcraft folder
EDIT: and these are what install prog will copy to your SC path
IF U CANNT FINISH UR INSTALLING , Dload a tool called MPQMaster which will be used to load the INSTALL.EXE directly from ur CD look into it , get what u need ,then right click on the files Extract them
StarDat.mpq will be extracted from CD1 install.exe BrooDat.mpq Smackw32.dll Riched20.dll Local.dll from CD2 install.exe as well as StarCraft.exe storm.dll patch_rt.mpq battle.snp

Okay, but uhm... I can't install SC. At all. The first file it installs is StarDat.mpq, and it doesn't install completely. It just stops while instalilng it.

Put all these 10 together (install.exe from CD2 or download from other websites which can provide many diferent size sorts of it,most of it smaller than what from Cd2 )

I had this problem. Bought a new CD = fix. I'm sure there are torrents for .iso's, but why not support Blizzard by shelling out a few bucks for this great game? I've probably bought 5 copies of SC/BW total, just don't scratch them as often as I do. Besides, you live in Canada, isn't everything free there?
You say CD is not the problem, if that's the case, copy everything from the CD to your hard drive and install from the folder on your hard drive.

Okay, but even if I get all these files... how would I put my CD key in? I wouldn't be able to play on bnet...

Thanks very much. Its much appreciated. I've been trying to do this for quite some time.
Again, thanks a lot. :D
