Whats up with the SD version in starcraft remaster

I played a bit one of the old broodwar version of the game, and it has water animations and looks a lot better, than the SD version of remastered...

I get that the SD version is basicly a inferior version of Broodwar, be it for whatever reason, even putting it into window mode in a similar configuration to the orginal doesnt seem to get you the same quality...

Is it something about my settings or are there really no water animations in SD version of remastered ?

As many have suspected, blizzard made the standard graphics worse than what the old 1.16 version had to increase sales. I agree that it is worse, especially when I watch something from the first ASL which is very good quality.

Its insane how much worse they made the old graphics look in remastered. Only reason I even use new graphics.
Only thing they added when people complained was a slider, which makes everything look super blurry...

At release there was also some terrible optimization that would basically max out your cpu (or GPU, can't remember) in certain conditions

When i switched from 1.16 to Remaster my old PC couldnt support HD.
BOY was i pissed ^^

You probably have the option turned off. Check "Enable Color Cycling" (under the 'Game' options, for god knows what reason, since this only pertains to a graphical effect). That's how water animations were implemented in BW: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_cycling

It seems the problem with SD image quality comes from software anti-aliasing introduced in SC:R. Whereas 1.16 forced monitor to change resolution mode to 640x480, thus monitor's hardware anti-aliasing means were used.
The issue is that even if monitor resolution is already 640x480, SC:R still applies anti-aliasing for no reason! I hope Rust code in ShieldBattery will address this issue at some point.

PS.
The best visual experience is by far with an old CRT monitor with fake progressive scan (by only drawing even or odd lines) and natural scaling without a need for anti-aliasing on the CRT tube (be it software or hardware).

thx, yeah seems tough to get the Broodwar + Remastered experience with 16 aspect ration full screen without weird stretching. Bad that, i got rid of our farvouriteCRT Monitor some years ago...
I mean even if you get the pixelated look, the buildings still have this special look to them from the original.
Not even talking about the different colors between SCR and broodwar. One more real, gritty,disgusting, while the other more like bright colors, baby cartoon...

Still looks daft if you use an old CRT and put it on 640x480 in windows btw.

Another thing I noticed is that the Mac Version of remastered still looks fine in sd. So I suppose whatever Blizzard fucked up has something to do with upgrading to a newer directx version for the Windows version of remastered.

It is worth it for the widescreen support alone, Yeah it would be nice if the old graphics were how they were in 1.16.1 but they'd still be in 4:3.
