Really cool lineup of maps.
Also one general note: the least amount of FS/Vermeer type of maps in the whole set in quite awhile, sign that they're trying to avoid another disaster (a TvT finals).
I think they just kept Dark Origin because it seemed like Protoss was doing good on it against both the two races, which is rare in modern BW for any map.

Crossing fingers for Champion, mainly because it was featured heavily in the remake map contest.

this is actually a newer version of Champion, it got pro-tested and updated based on their feedback

because he's the tournament director, but no doubt he has input from production staff etc

You say not a good one but he got a progamer license. That makes him at the time better than most of the Terran players in Korea and the rest of the world. Getting a progamer license was super difficult lol

It may come as a shock, but being the best tournament player does not necessarily make you the best in every facet of the game nor the activities surrounding it, including the creation/interpretation of maps, coaching, strategy development, etc.

I agree with this on Apocalypse, it feels kinda messy as is (looks like they tried to copy Ascension). Woulda been a nicer map if it was bot left vs bot right, just gotta move expos/overall layout around a bit.
Champion looks by far like the best map to me atm (main factors being design/balance), the other maps still need to be refined imo.
That said a lot of these maps have potential but there's some big design/balance issues, Campanella for example looks interesting but it has big spawn disadvantages. For example if u spawn bot left u have an easy path to drop behind bot right's nat or 3rd base (same for top right vs top left), i also don't think the inbase 3rds should be right behind the highgrounds.
For maps like Campanella the layout is interesting but balance-wise it's very hard to get these maps right as 4p maps, it woulda been much easier to balance as a 2p map (or 3p but that would also be hard most likely, way more do-able tho). Most of the other maps just look way too cramped, a lot of reverse ramps too..

Champion looks like they tooked the Polypoid/Vermeer/Allegro type of map and turn it into a 2p map. So it's nice. Since Dark Origin is confirmed, they will remove either Champion or Invader. I guess it'll be Invader because Dark Origin is already the weird 2p map and Champion looks more standard.
ASL always has at least four 4p maps and never more than one 3p map, so I dont know why Apocalypse is in contention since Sylphid is already confirmed.
So there we have it already, the official map pool of ASL16: - Neo Dark Origin (2p) - Champion (2p) - Neo Sylphid (3p) - Retro (4p) - Tempest (4p) - La Campanella (4p) - Shooting Brake (4p)
The good news is they finally ditched Vermeer, the most imbalanced 'standard' map in recent memory and it seems like Retro has taken its position. Retro is virtually 50% for all races now, so it could be the best map of the modern era actually.

TBH I'd like they surprise me and remove Tempest and replace it with a vintage map or a crazy map (we don't have one this season).
Tempest looks to me like a shit map which only looks aesthetically pleasing but units can't move properly and Tanks can hit you from anywhere and you dont even know where it comes from.

ASL is for audience, we + 4 strongest players (gosu) in last season should choose map for this league.
Step 1: 910 will pick 15 maps Step 2: Gosu veto 4 maps Step 3: Gosu pick 4 maps Step 4: Audience pick 3 maps
My map pool for ASL 16:
1 old map 1 crazy map 2 semi island/island map 3 standard map
ASL 16 should be PvP in the final!
