TeamLiquid staff had a brief chance to talk to Rain and Last after their showmatch at BlizzCon concluded. Due to time constraints, only several questions were asked, but some of the answers will keep you wondering what we might see the next time these two players play on stage.
Rain:
Q: How is transitioning back from SC2 to SC1, and how is playing on stage again in front of a crowd at BlizzCon? A: I started off as a SC1 player and moved to SC2. I was sad because I didn’t win in SC1, but now that I won and played at BlizzCon, it means a lot to me.
Q: With the recent success with Zerg in the PvZ matchup, and the absence of Bisu, how will Protoss try to even out the matchup again? A: It depends on the maps. Even on some maps where Protoss isn’t favored, if there is a little space that Protoss players can work with, it’s doable.
Q: What do you think of the longevity of Starcraft: Remastered? How long will professional play continue to last for? A: So SCR is still popular in Korea so it will go on for a while. My concern right now is that most of the current players are the same age and most will go to military soon, so this will be a critical time.
Q: Any words to your foreign fans that continue to support you for this long? A: Thank you for supporting through SC1 and 2. I will do my best to try to pay back the fans support.
Last:
Q: With EffOrt showing some holes in the 1-1-1 that you used so effectively against Jaedong in the KSL, do you think Terrans need to innovate another new build now? A: The 111 strategy is traditionally strong against Zerg, but EffOrt showed that you can overcome it. But watching EffOrt have a counter play against the 1-1-1 gave me ideas on how to counter his strategies.
Q: With most Terrans having so much trouble against Protoss except you and Flash, how do you think Terrans will adapt to best move the matchup more in favor of Terran? A: Traditionally, Protoss is strong against Terran so even I have difficulty in the matchup. The only way I can grow is to stack experience and play more, and see what works.
Q: You had a small period where you did not perform in offline tournaments. How does it feel to be once again considered as a top-tier player? A: Every time I was eliminated early on, I was very disappointed in myself. The KSL system where you have to play your opponents multiple times played to my favor. I will try my best to maintain my top form.
Q: Do you have any words to say to your foreign fans that still support you? A: I wasn’t really aware that there were foreign SC1 fans. But now that I know there are fans out there that support me, I will try my best to make up for their support.

Was he not aware that there are casters besides the korean ones? Does he not watch streams and see english signs in the crowd? crazy
enjoyed the deeper questions about the MU's, wish there had been more time so they could share more on it

Like no joke I've seen this far too often. Koreans really have no idea that people outside of Korea like StarCraft.

As for Last not being aware, maybe it's more that he thought it was a smaller crowd of foreign fans, rather than what he saw at Blizzcon. TL interviewed him in the past, so my guess is that he's just forgotten and never realized the size.

is there any chance last may have a different understanding about what it means to be a "fan" due to some cultural difference?

as a SC2 fan who follows SC1 only from a distance, i really enjoyed both players' reaction to perceived balance issues - they seem to focus on their own training rather than making toxic comments or victimizing themselves. i think SC2 pros could learn to conduct themselves more in that manner for interviews.

Apologies for the short interview. They told us only 10 minutes for the interview so I tried to think of a good 3 questions for each player (and obviously a 4th question just to thank their foreign fans). Obviously, none of these players want to reveal too much in their preparations and ideas of match-up but I wanted to go with more in-depth questions that could possibly generate more interesting answers than just "oh Rain, you won, how does it feel to represent ASL in this showmatch" as an example, because the answer is going to be a very predictable "feels great, blah blah blah" answer.
Couldn't get a hold of Tastosis unfortunately, would've loved to get their reactions from a foreigner/caster perspective, especially since their interview would've most likely been much longer. I hope every can enjoy this short but sweet interview, thanks again to Plexa and Bigfan for sending me out to Blizzcon to get to meet these players!
Also shoutouts to Jaeyun, Qikz, Rapid, EsportsJohn for hanging out with me during the showmatch. Was a lot of fun talking about the games live.

I don't know how he can say that. At one point (1.5 years ago maybe), he was on twitch and he was routinely getting english questions and answering some of them with the help of some translator.

Sometimes they forget about us when they're so focused on playing well and catering to their Korean base. I'm not too surprised by the answers they gave us. Obviously would've been nice for them to remember but it's not necessary.

If he went back to Afreeca and streamed solely there, he'll be getting only questions from Koreans and with Last being so much on KSL/ASL recently, he's probably even forgotten he has fans haha

No need to apologize for the interview being short. I'd actually like to say: good job for bringing us a piece of good content!

As my wife tells me all the time; "I love it, even if it's short!" :D Good stuff!
