Hey there,

Lately I discoverd that with low speed you can micro a lot more (well duh!), wich i have been doing now for some time against 2 pc's (i'm really bad, like E-minus on abyss). I was wondering if other people (noobs like me) want to play games on lower speed?

I think it's only normal to play on lower speed when you have less skill: that way you can do all the fun things -- wich i feel deprived of in normal (fastest) games. In normal games i dont have time to micro, it's like i'm only playing 20% of scbw, cause i dont have time for the other 80%.

Anyone up to it? Reply here or pm me.

i don't think the best way to get better is to play on a slower speed and gradually turn the speed up, somehow. it can be fun to handicap things to make them easier to do sometimes, but if you find the right mindstate it can be just as fun not to be able to do things but to die trying.
that's what starcraft is all about, hard to learn, and you have to learn to have fun in some kind of modest sense or something acceptant of your lack of skill. not like some other games where as a newb you can get the sense that you're accomplishing something well enough, even if it could be done alot better, but much of the only fun is in trying to do certain things which at a certain level you likely fail at completely.
could be fun i guess but bad habbit.

first year or maybe even 2 years of starcraft i played more on fast speed than on fastest

used more fun units those 2 years than in any other period of the game.. so if you're patient (these days it would be impossible for me to enjoy playing on any other speed) and you find someone else who wants to play on fast or whatever, you'll probably have just as much if not more fun than on fastest.

when 2 gosus play on slowest , game may take ~1hour but the gameplay in replay (watched on fastest ++) seems to be ideal, and avg apm is 800-1000 ;]

in wc2 they variate gamespeeds like variating maps actually. which is cool. in that game though micro can be pretty hard somehow on fastest speed. something to do with the lag, which is much of why they variate. but it's like they'll have a tournament with first round fastest garden of war resources high and second round fast resources medium on high seas combat. that game is really nice in some ways.

The thing I strongly disagree with is that playing on slow speed can somehow make you better. You have to adjust to the pace of the game from start.

IMO playing on slower speeds is great for learning how BO's work though. It would be easier to time things without having crazy multitask.
I need a signature so I'm using this one.

i doubt playing on slower speeds helps you that much, since the sense of timing in adjusting to faster speeds is going to take you some time

look at it this way. for those that play guitar hero: sure, it's fun and easy to keep playing on easy, or medium. but once you switch to expert, even though it's painful to begin with, going back to easy and medium is a total joke. it's like practicing swinging with heavier bats in baseball

That's an apt comparison. I played on Fast and Faster for a long time in 2v2s. Some players would accept it and play along, others would question "why Fast/Faster?", and still others would complain or mistake the slower speed for lag. Performing impressive feats of micro is much easier on Fast/Faster, but playing on those speeds is good practice for the Fastest speed setting. On Fast/Faster, you can learn the fundamentals of advanced micro (such as momentum firing, dancing, drop-popping, and cloning) and eventually learn to perform them on Fastest with regular success. After that, Fast/Faster may seem agonizingly slow or "newbish" but they're merely there for novice or average players as stepping stones.

I think if you really want to learn, it's better to start on fastest. Then when you get use to that speed, you can play on one of the slower settings to get a more thorough understanding of micro / BO/ whatever. Playing constantly at lower speeds will result in you getting use to that speed, and makes the transition harder. It's more noticeable to go from faster to slower and you'll notice your 'micro improve' (in relation to in game timing anyways, honestly, your real time APM will stay the same, but you'll play with a more 'pro-ish strategy' at those speeds). Going from slower to fastest, obviously makes your micro slower, and encourages you to stay at those settings instead, rather then improving you, in my opinion.

I want to play custom games at the fastest speed. Last time I played Starcraft was before brood war. Now the competition thing is insane.

I know I can change the speed manually. But every time when I restart my custom game I have to reset it. I need to practice how to get my probes to mine perfectly at fastest speed.

So I need to set it to fastest at default. Is there a file I can edit? Can I patch/mod the game? How about a command line thingy?

I don't think you should play at any slower speed under any circumstance other then watching replays, because you will only be handicapping yourself.

I disagree. I very much like playing on slowest speed. The game is completely different. You can move the mele units arround carefully and micro them. Zerg units can heal if they live. Protoss can recharge. Terrans and run a rearguard action and a rolling defense, or flanking and enveloping actions with medics. It's a whole different game. I have 2 other guys who I play with regularly and they agree with me. In fact we are looking for another person to play with us reguarly. if anyone is interested send me an email. Thanks,

-G
