I'm looking to get a bunch of my friends together to play Starcraft: Brood War. We'd like to sit at tables near each other and play a few 8 player Free For All games. I have a bunch of questions since I've never done this before.
* Do we need to use iccup/gameranger/hamachi/something else?
* Will a downloaded copy work with someone who has a legit copy of the game?
* Will any old router work or do we need a "switch" that has 8 ethernet slots?
* What multiplayer options should we use? (lan, direct ip connection)
* What 8 player maps should we be playing?
* Any other Starcraft lan/general lan tips?
---
While I'm at it, what are my options for playing with my friend who has a legit copy of the game? I'd be downloading the game from the /r/broodwar sidebar. Do we need to use something like ICCup or can we direct ip connection or something?
(This was originally posted on /r/broodwar.)

* Do we need to use iccup/gameranger/hamachi/something else?+ Use LAN Connection instead, will be much easier to handle instead of running BW online for 8 PCs behind the same IP (if not impossible).
* Will a downloaded copy work with someone who has a legit copy of the game? You can just type in any serial you want, if you are not connected to Internet while installing, afaik. Cannot join BNet though. Or use ICCUP's BW Version, should also work.
* Will any old router work or do we need a "switch" that has 8 ethernet slots? If your router has 8 LAN Ports, it will work. Otherwise you ll need a simple switch (9+ ports though) as you already wrote yourself. (f.e. http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-SF1016D-16-Port-100Mbps-Desktop/dp/B000N79VQO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1446224467&sr=8-4&keywords=ethernet 16 port)
* What multiplayer options should we use? (lan, direct ip connection) LAN UDP Connection works the best. (TCP/IP is worse for more people and unless you use older OS not really better)
* What 8 player maps should we be playing? Hunters, BGH, Fastest, 4on4 Zero Clutter are the only real 8 Player Maps I know. But you can use any Blizzard map, as 8-player map tend to be trash anyway, so you can also use Blizz maps.
* Any other Starcraft lan/general lan tips? Have a lot of fun. I'd love to be on a BW LAN.

I would highly recommend Primeval Isles and Killing Fields for 8 player maps.
Oh and Neo Abattoir.

For maps, you could play on the huge maps there are in the game. 512x512 or 256x256, can't remember. If you are 8 players I think those maps should be quite fun^^ But yeah Hunters man... Probably can find more good 8 players custom maps out there on some sites.

I was beaten to it...
Assuming you're not the "FPM 24/7" kinda guys, I'd also add: Rise and Ruin to the list
Or one of these for some 2v2v2v2 games: Joint Venture Citadel
These have less than 8 spawns, but maybe if some one needs a break: Thanatos Sixth Sense Sympathia Tectonic Ridge Paradigm
Some of these are obviously yet in various states of incompletion. But I am always happy to finish a map when there's some actual interest in it.
Some not at all positionally balanced maps would be: Seven Sins Isles of Shakuras
I am not at all a fan of 256² sized maps, it's just too big and no mapper can actually be bothered to make one that is not actually a bloody void wasteland because of all the space there is to fill, so you'd be hard-pressed to even find a halfway decent one.... Maybe these ones qualify: The Suns Star Red Clover Dominion Portal Starcraft
They are still really oversized for what is on them, and everything is really oversized to "compensate", but it's the best I could find...

* Any other Starcraft lan/general lan tips?
Play co-operative use map settings games. It's great for when it's 2 in the morning and every one is tired and / or drunk. I can email you a few great ones if you are interested. PM me.

BGH is always a blast, and even playing phantom mode is fun for lan parties. Personally I would direct connect with switch / router, doesn't matter which one, we personally use a switch with enough ports. You shouldn't need a unique version for each person, as long as you are not on battle.net you should be fine

Any wifi router will work, if some of them are wireless and some are wired makes no difference especially on lan, for fun, with no money at stake.

Sounds fun, keeping the dream alive

Phantom BGH would be a great map for your LAN party, OP.

do 2v2v2v2's instead as the main game. there's a bit more control and you guys can plan other stuff around BW. like BBQ + 4v4, 1v1, or random draw 2v2 tournament as people are still eating and helping themselves. i find BW lans breed a bit of ego even amongst friends, which is fine since i'm assuming you guys haven't played for a long time or are newer group. better to just keep it a light atmosphere and churn out games rather than have long downtime as people are dead (in the case of 8-for-all's) and stuff like that.
some people just rather play than to watch other people playing while talking shit and such. and at the very least a team environment is good to alleviate that.

You can always play some 1v1/2v2 while being dead...

gl hf! if only I had 8 friends who still play BW haha

I don't have any friends who still play Brood War. I do have a ton of friends who used to play Brood War though and are nostalgic about it. All I had to do was set something up and invite them.

You got most of the good advises already. The only other thing we had it happen quite often when we made this kind of a party is that we would discover that we did not all have the same version of the game so some could not join the game. And it would cause some down time until we had the same version installed on all of the PC.
So make sure you have the same version on all of them. . Enjoy .
I had a lot of good times having lan parties with my friends playing Brood war. It was awesome.

lol these maps are pretty cool
