You could always take a four player map and play Team Melee 1v1v1v1. (That's where two people control the same units/ buildings.)
I'm a big fan of 2v2v2v2's though. I think you get much more interesting multi-front wars.
There's not a lot of team maps with shared entrances, so I tried making a few of my own, but as I'm not a great mapmaker, your mileage may vary, but this is the latest version of the map we used in that 3v2v2 LAN blog I did 2 years ago.

btw does anyone know whats the name of that ums that was a race in a square where you had to run for multiple laps and each lap you had a new unit. I think many people here on TL would disagree with your first statement.
Starcraft/maps/scenario/(5)Race of Death.scm

In the one i am talking about everyone gets a new unit every lap and you try to slow down your opponents while you go on. Sometimes you get a slow unit, sometimes a fast one. Super fun game.

Is there anyway to work a mac into this?

Not sure about problems with newer Mac OSs, but shouldn't BW generally run on Macs? Anyway, you could always just use any old Windows PC/laptop any one has lying around to run the game... When in doubt, some dusty old piece of junk with something like win95 on it would actually be the least-worries solution...

Play a 4 on 4 on Octopus (original map) and enjoy the ridiculousness. :D

It took us an hour to get all of our setup issues resolved but we were eventually able to play 8 player brood war for hours. We got the computers (macs included) connected to the wifi and used an ethernet for our no-wireless-card desktop. We played a few 4v4s, a 2v2v2v2 (on Friends?) and an 8 player free for all (on Wheel of War). We just randomly chose 8 player maps and they generally all turned out to be fine. One map was really low econ and one map only had a few vulnerable expansions. After the first game we had a much better idea of how to balance teams and games were much more even after that. Thanks for all of your help everyone. We'll definitely be doing this again.
