[FIX Starleague] Bisu "I feel like I've repaid a small portion of debt to my fans"

"As a progamer, and even after retirement, the fans continued to love and support me. There was no way for me to properly repay that debt and I feel winning FIX Starleague was a small step in repaying the fans."

The first thing Bisu referenced after winning FIX Starleague was the fan's love. During Bisu's almost 10 year long progaming career, he dominated many individual leagues and brought his team to the top in proleague. However, he was unable to win an individual since 2008 and he felt deeply regretful.

On 2014 March 15th Bisu prepared for a new term in his life. Bisu playe as an ex-pro in the FIX Starleague [T/N: they say more like regular person but I just used ex-pro] and reached the top. He was able to pay back a small portion of the debt he owed to the fans for their love and support.

Bisu stated he would not be participating in the next league. "I put so much energy into preparing for FIX Starleague and it was incredibly tiring" said Bisu. "I don't plan to play in the next league."

The following is a QnA with Bisu.

Q. Your thoughts on winning.
A. It was my first time playing in FIX Starleague and I was able to win. It was the first time in 6 years I was able to win an individual league and it was very sentimental for me. Truthfully, I thought of this as my last win as I prepared for the finals. The games didn't go the way I planned but the games turned out to be very entertaining and I'm completely exhausted.

Q. In game 1, you suffered greatly to overlord drops.
A. I played too aggressively in game 1 and lost. If I played more defensively, I think I could've reduced the amount of damage I took to drop plays. If I defended and massed up an army to attack I would've been ahead. After getting some worker kills with my Shuttle-Reaver I got a bit greedy and and fell victim to the multi-pronged drops.

Q. Your feelings after game 1.
A. The game just didn't go the way I wanted it to. I thought I would win Mist and start off with a win but losing made me lose some confidence. While practicing, the map I had the best winrate on was Mist.

Q. Your choice to play a more defensive style in game 2, 3, 4. Was it because of game 1.
A. Losing game 1 was partially the reason but Hero is an opponent who is very hard to harass. So while practicing I focused on polishing up my management skills. As I was taking expansions in game 2, I was thinking "let's take this to a hand-to-hand fight." I was confident I would not lose in the full unit composition fight.

Q. Hero played mostly with Lair units.
A. I didn't even have time to check if the opponent was Lair of Hive. I focused on what I had to do. After blocking [the initial attack] I wanted to end it in one blow.

Q. Your mind must've blanked after losing game 4.
A. I made a fatal error in that game, thinking that I had already won. After blocking the hydra rush and as I was cutting down the overlord count in my head I was thinking "I win." That's the moment I lost. Mistakenly thinking the game was already won, I went overboard with the corsairs and lost them and there was no way for me to block the drops. At that timing, a lurker drop was the only way I could possibly lose.

Q. In game 5 you did a 2 gate. Was it an all-in.
A. It was a planned management play. Using the 2 gate zealot rush I planned to force [Hero] to make many sunken colonies or zerglings but Hero blocked it really well. The attack into 11 was what brought me the comeback win. If at that timing Lurkers were ready, the zealots would've been unable to do anything and I would've lost. Before he could do that I cut down the overlord count to block his supply and slowly brought the game in my favor. Instead of assuming I won though, I continued to be cautious and aware of potential drops and focused. I was able to win because of that.

Q. Was there an emergency card planned for finals.
A. in the round of 4, I felt I needed to show something so I planned a specific build. But playing aggressive [against Hero] I thought I would be countered. I had planned to win the 200/200 fight and management plays.

Q. Your thoughts on participating in Sonic Starleague.
A. There a lot of tough opponents this league. I was in the group of death starting from the round of 32. I won but up to finals there were really no easy opponent. I guess you can call it luck that I met a Zerg but they were truly tough opponents. PvT was actually easier.

Q, Your plans for the future?
A. I really went all-in for this FIX Starleague. I practiced hard and looked forward only. I thought I could play relaxed in Sonic Starleague but it was incredibly tough and I would like some rest.

Q. Thinks you would like to say.
A. To the fans who came out to Kwangwoon University thank you so much. A lot of people I know came out too. Zero helped me [with practice] quite a lot. I won't say this is the end. I promise we will meet again [the fans and I]. I'm relieved I was able to show good form to my fans. Please give lots of love for civilian [T/N: again this means more along the lines of regular person but I just used the word civilian] Kim Taek Yong.

Thanks a lot for the translation! Bisu fighting! I don't think it's a bad idea if he takes a break seeing as he took it seriously but I also wonder if this will affect SSL10 and such. People keep talking about the hardest competition and rightly so but if he's not playing, will that mean that whoever wins SSL10 isn't going to be as recognized due to that? It does mean Sea has a better chance of winning though lol.

Meh, don't like that at all. If you win something, you gotta defend it! Not doing so just makes the following season debatable, and the following champion won't get as much glory.

Oh well, Bisu can do what he likes anyway. He's not on any KesPA team.

Thanks for the translation. I've been waiting for this.

But I don't understand why Bisu doesn't want to participate in SSL 10. He should be defending his title, isn't he seeded? But well, if he's exhausted then that's fine. Health is more important anyway but I really want to see him play more bw games . May be his exhaustion is also the reason why he doesn't participate in the other leagues.

no one knows what bisu going to do we will just have to see what he decides to do. he might go to army maybe? its a possibility but I mean after such a great run in SSL9 it would be awesome if he changed his mind and played in ssl10 too.

You guys all know that Bisu was quite behind when he did that timing attack? The only reason it worked was, because if you look at the mini map, Hero was out of position with half his army near his third (so I guess he didn't see the attack coming?)

At the time; Hero had overlord speed, full hydra upgrades, lurker aspect (some morphing) and 5hatcheries. Bisu only sent 7zlots and a goon (+1 just finished before he engaged) he then had the 5 gates, a stargate and leg speed just finished (no high templar). Bisu didnt reinforce right away either, so assuming Hero deflected it, Bisu has no robotics or storm to defend Hero's counter and will be contained for probably the remainder of the game or just die to hydra lurk.

edit: the 2gw build didn't do much and put him behind, it was also predictable as he did some 1 base vs Larva in the semi finals, and the follow up wasn't that great (did he really even have a plan for this BO?)

Hero was expecting the attack not at the main but at the 3rd, he had moved his hydra army from his nat to his third after pushing out for map control; also the sairs were harassing at the bottom and he hadn't built his spore yet, so he had weak air defenses, and probably expected a zealot+sair attack there.

Bisu's play on this map is a 2gate with lots to more zealot pressure on the nat/3rd depending on how well the first attack went, and threatening either a speed and/or a +1 timing attack with his composition, while he expands and builds a sair fleet behind it. It relies on forcing either sunks or lots of lings from the opponent (which both happened) to keep him even on the ground. On this specific game, he was already building towards a reaver (IIRC Support Bay was already warping in during that attack) when he launched it, fully expecting that IF he didn't face hero's army at the main (where his lots get wiped), he'd have a reaver w/ shuttle out by the time they hit his natural, counting on his micro to keep both alive and break any contain.

Bisu "A. It was an planned management play. Using the 2 gate zealot rush I planned to force [Hero] to make many sunken colonies or zerglings but Hero blocked it really well. The attack into 11 was what brought me the comeback win. If at that timing Lurkers were ready, the zealots would've been unable to do anything and I would've lost."

...even Bisu himself agrees with my analysis, you were wrong.

edit: sad that he is done for now though despite continuing to stream on Afreeca.

Sad if he doesn't participate in SSL 10. But cool, in a way.

Imagine ten years from now: "remember that time we watched Bisu win SSL and cry on the stage live before he retreated into the shadows?"

Just saying that he's taking a break -_-

SSL10's announcement might not happen for weeks.

Weeks = A lavish break imo.

EDIT: If anything he is complimenting on the level of talents we have at our hands.

Thank you Bisu, you never had any debts to your fans. You left professional BW with a bang, beating Flash in the ace match of the Proleague Grand Finals, right in front of me. I raised fists of victory and cried of joy. For that I will forever be grateful.

lol, the 2 gate wasn't planned, Bisu was just freaked out because of Game 4 because he thought he won the series and then there was a chance he could lose it all. There is no way he prepared for weeks in advance and said "Game 5 is Sniper Ridge. I think I'll practice 2 gate for that map."

Bisu will be OK. He doesn't have to worry about carrying SKT in proleague anymore. He can watch hot girls talk and eat on Afreeca, browse FOMOS care free, and make say "bwingbwing!!" to fans, all pressure-free. But his competitive spirit will rise once again and he will defend his title.

Honestly with a game like BW where the better player would almost always win, I don't think a bo7 would ever be justified or needed for that matter.

Well unless you're Sea and up against Kwanro :p

Thanks for the interview.
I've waited so long for Bisu to win an individual title and when he did I was buzzing for days, it's like closure and I can finally move on.
You deserve a rest Bisu <3 although the next SSL will now be less hyped. Wonder what the sponsors will think, although we will get snow and iris so that probably evens it out.

the day after he won at night he was exhibiting like maniac the framed fix poster of him winning or something
and everytime he would do so, hundreds of dollars would fall x_x

it's a shame he doesn't want to compete in the next ssl

Would be a real shame not to see him in SSL10, but I guess I understand where he's coming from. I sure hope he'll at least take part in the leagues that happen after that The more good players are playing the better.

lol, the 2 gate wasn't planned, Bisu was just freaked out because of Game 4 because he thought he won the series and then there was a chance he could lose it all. There is no way he prepared for weeks in advance and said "Game 5 is Sniper Ridge. I think I'll practice 2 gate for that map."

He obviously does not feel comfortable Forge Expanding on that map. He 1 gated on that map vs. Larva in the previous round. (Also many Protoss players during the Kespa period, often went gateway first on Sniper Ridge - it was a general strategic adaptation, after finding that FFE may not produce the best results)(also e.g. if he was producing the best results in practice, using gateway first builds 1/2 - then it would be entirely plausible). So it is reasonably likely that 1 gate and/or 2 gate could have been preferred/planned for in the game vs. Hero (there is nothing that would necessarily preclude a 2 gate opening from being extensively prepared for anyways - Stork once prepared a gateways first opening for 2 years to use against Jaedong - if it's the best build for the situation, you prepare that build - whether it's 2 gate or something else) . Typically if players are "freaking out" or if it is an important game, the tendency drifts towards playing more safely as opposed to more riskily. In any case, Bisu is not necessarily a player who performs best in pressure filled Individual League situations, however, he has never really shown a tendency to "freak out". Considering how the game went, and all the surrounding contextual factors, it does not seem likely that the 2 gate build was not prepared in advance.

I think both of you guys are putting WAY too much emotional investment into that game -_-

no Bisu in SSL10?

Maybe it's just a buffering for an epic SSL11, Bisu and Jaedong finals finally!

You misunderstand completely. Emotion wasn't really a primary factor in any component of my post. Regarding the game itself, I actually did not find it that compelling...there were many more interesting games in that series, and in the tournament besides.

Thanks for the translation.

Hopefully KTY will change his mind about the next individual league, though there's no doubt he would've been under a lot of pressure to win that one.

I doubt there is one since they usually only interview the winner. Would've liked to see hero's thoughts on that final game though.

I disagree, primarily because in almost all the SOSPA games leading up to that protoss had been opening with some sort of one base opening. I suspect it has something to do with having to face contains with that ridge, but to be honest I'm not sure; but given the trend I have no problem accepting that Bisu was planning to one base on sniper the entire time.

I don't think it's accurate to say that Protosses/Bisu have been 1 basing on that map. They are just deciding to get gateway/s, before they get the forge, and using earlier zealots + relatively later cannons to get a relatively fast expansion (instead of a standard FFE).
