So which is easier? Sitting down with iccup people amd working things out, or setting up a new server and maintaining it for years to come?

I think I know the answer...

Sometimes the correct solution to a problem isn't always the easiest.

Guys about the port forwarding feature, it's exactly the same as my UPNP Forwarder Plugin so if you can't access your router because it's owned by someone else(work, school, neighbor, etc.) you can't host however the process is just simplified.
There is a possibility of having a host bot for ladder games though

Host bot would be clever. Seems like the machine power for it would be really expensive, though, since you might need a dedicated machine for each game.

I wonder if there is some way to hack UDP hole punching (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UDP_hole_punching) into BW.

This is something i sincerely think nothing but good can come from. Adding such features would amp up the convenience and fun factor by a milestone. But we don't need a completely new server for it either, i think it would be pretty neat if it was worked in conjunction with iccup, considering it already has the biggest player base outside of Korea, you wouldnt have to worry about attracting users. Also it might cause a divide which may lead to that the few we have already become on iccup gets split up between 2 servers.

Im just very hopefull that iccup might want to test these things out a bit. T_T_T please..

That would be nice, but they're not interested. Myself and others have approached them before, and tried hard to get them to change stuff/let us change stuff, but they're not interested.

This sounds very promising. Though I'm not sure about the dividing effects it will arise from this. Mostly concerned about growing apart from the russian community.

Anyways, the changes proposed are more than welcome, and if the only possible solution to having them implemented is making a new server from scratch, well let it be then. Please, the AMM should not deprive you from searching for other games while its looking for opponents, and give a Yes/No message before jumping you to the lobby. I strongly disagree on the achievements feature though. BW is no the game for that. Instead why not replays being able to be hosted without password?

There's a lot of people on Iccup that likes to ob 1v1 matches. People could download replays from the rep section, make public and watch it along with another people and comment about the game, have fun and all that. Or newbies could ask for help, instead of making the thread about their replay here on tl, their game could be analyzed by experienced players on the same server, real-time feedback.

I can see myself doing the switch, if the features are better and the playerbase steady.

I agree with other posters that it needs to be officially supported or at least advertised by TL, and all the tournaments need to make the switch for this to be feasible. And it should be rather fleshed out before launch to avoid making a bad first impression.
And while we are making our Christmas wishlists I would like to add a "disable F1 key" option similar to the disable windows key option to mine.

You should just do what i did and just take out the F1 key all together from your keyboard.

Or simply have 1 hostbot and let everyone wait in a queue. Hosting a game should take less than 15 seconds each, given the fact that a player will have to wait a certain amount of time to even find an opponent first with the amm and the possible chance that one of the two people are able to host, it might work out.

To add to possible features(expecting this to be at the bottom of the list though ._.), a Mac version of any(at least some) features would be awesome to have if possible. This is one thing iCCup never did that imo it should have.

Auto matchmaking and lan latency requires hacking into starcraft so i doubt it will make it to mac.

I seriously doubt something like this would create a long term division of the BW players. A short term, yes, but the gains in the long run(more features etc) would definitely cause the total amount of BW players to increase.

Automatchmaking should be the main goal of a possible new server. It will attract many SC2 newcomers who are used with the system and we might retain some players to the scene.

And what do you mean by Achievements? If it is something like SC2 Achievements I think that's pretty dumb and useless.

as a hardcore sc2 fan I will say the main thing bad about bw is the fact that it takes too much work and firewall reconfiging to even play a game

I would be all about switching to another server, provided it had the coding and the administration to really give it legs. I think if you really hype auto-matchmaking, that would be an enormous selling point. Imagine if you could get 1% of the SC2 players to give it a try. Then if half of that 1% started playing BW regularly, you've got a big increase in the BW population.

Is there any sort of "how to" create one of those bots somewhere?

Well an easy, straightforward way is to send keys and mouse clicks to Starcraft.

Huh, I figured that when a host left during the game, that BW's networking would try to re-host on one of the other players (which could require the ports to be forwarded?). Was I wrong about that?
