I played / play on garena
Without a valid anti hacker , or some stats system, it's a lost cause unfortunately.
But creating games is really easy, i didn't thought that on icc is that hard without port forwarding .

now they are even corrupt? i bid you to show proof.

Well, technically i dont care, but i wont be playing on a new server until it is more frequently used then ICC. Which isnt gonna happen. TL is a rather small community BW wise. And many people worldwide still play ICC.

Corrupt may or may not be stretching it, but they are unprofessional (like they IP banned a whole city)

So which is easier? Sitting down with iccup people amd working things out, or setting up a new server and maintaining it for years to come?

I think I know the answer...

Starting a new server, if you didn't think that then you obviously havent joined the iccup team yet.

replace the power ranking with the top ladder people on teamliquid.

also being able to have a pre portforwarded sever would be a 1000 times better for the community and being able to let new people stick with the game instead of leaving it becouse they can't find games
The harder it becomes, the more you should focus on the basics.

The only way I see this ever getting of the ground is if teamliquid fully supported the server and would advertize it to the other two bigger communities. Proper marketing of the automated match-making system, a good lunch event, SC2 celebrities playing BW for fun on the new server for the launch event and proper marketing inside and outside of the community (Would it be so hard to get personalities like Day9 and Husky to do a little bit of promotion for a game that they used to be heavily invested in?)

Marketing to the casual side of the community and people who don't currently play BW or haven't played BW in some time is in reality the only way to make this work (with the backing of TL).

That would certainly help, but...

I think this would go a long way towards populating the server. A BW-server managed by TL would be the dream, but a BW-server endorsed by TL would be almost as good (and more realistic). I also believe this would make BW a lot more approachable to new players.
Currently, if someone new to the BW scene comes to TL and asks how to get started, they get an answer similar to this;
  1. Update BW to latest patch
  2. Install iccup-/w-/mini-launcher
  3. Download the correct map pack from the server you want to play on
  4. port forward
  5. If using Windows Vista/7/8, download colorfix
  6. Register an account on iccup/fish
  7. Double-check that your anti-hack and lan-latency work

If it's possible to remove a few items from that list, or to have them available in the same place, that would go a long way towards making BW easier to pick up. For example: imagine if you could log in with your (already created) teamliquid account? Or if you don't have to port forward?

Note that I'm not saying that teamliquid has to be in charge of running the proposed server, but if there's gonna be a new server, communication and cooperation with big BW communities such as TL and Defiler will be key. The closer fan communities and tournament organizers cooperate with the server admins, the better.

I agree with all this. If there was one file to dowload and double click that did all those things on the list, I'd switch immediatly.

would there be a way that the swbi would be able to help set this up??

if there would be a port forward it would mean that newer people exetly would stick and thus make it bigger in the end, besides i doubt there would be a huge split if this stuff will be done correctly.

There's a lot of issues with an idea like this. Just for starters, it's not as simple as developing and implementing the technology required to do the stuff on your list, but it's about maintainence. How are you going to deal with hackers, deal with disputes. You'll need lots of staff, clear rule sets and stuff like that, which is a hard thing to find. Volunteers by their nature are very unreliable, so you'd need a really good system to streamline their work or incentivise it. I just honestly am not sure how well this would work, even with iccup being stupid. At the end of the day, it's just me, sayle and stratos blacklisted, not really a huge deal imo (fish is better anyway).

I agree that in an ideal world, a server not run by iccup would be a great thing, but there are significant roadblocks in getting there, and even then trying to get enough people playing to make matchmaking work would be tough. If you are set on trying to do this, make sure you go in with a really well developed plan

I agree, people are too unreliable and lazy. The best thing would have been just to fix iccup like 2 years ago.
I don't need luck, luck is for noobs, good luck to you though

Guys about the port forwarding feature, it's exactly the same as my UPNP Forwarder Plugin so if you can't access your router because it's owned by someone else(work, school, neighbor, etc.) you can't host however the process is just simplified.
There is a possibility of having a host bot for ladder games though

Keep Brood War alive! I like this initiative. I'll even invest a lot more time in BW than I do in SC2 if this new server were to be implemented.
