As a terran player, miss-hitting i for mines or o for siege would most likely determine the fate of battle, that split second you are wondering why your tanks didnt siege and found out you were pressing i all along and have to look at the keyboard might cost yout the game Pressing the wrong key on the piano is equally fatal. Hell, having all the hotkeys on one side of the map doesn't solve this problem anyways.

That's a terrible analogy because a chair isn't even necessary to study, whereas the keyboard is completely necessary to play StarCraft against people. Additionally, remapping the keyboard means nothing to a casual gamer or a beginner because they don't understand how important the keyboard is while playing unless they have some prior experience with another RTS like SC2 or WC3. However, for the millions and millions of people who have played StarCraft, I don't think the fundamentals of control reduce the accessibility of the game, or will significantly alter the overall skill of any particular player.

Remapping the keyboard via 3rd party is ok, while it is a horrible idea to include this feature into some kind of launcher to make it easier for newcomers to get going? We are still discussing about a new server that has a lot of good features to attract many people, meaning the foreigner community will not split, right? Given the amount of controversy over changing it, I can pretty much guarantee it won't be in the launcher. If you want to remap your hotkeys you can do that yourself.

IMO, there's only an insignificant amount of people that still plays BW without checking TL. The possible features however are much much better than what Iccup has to offer.

Considering how many people from Peru I've played on Iccup recently and even more from Russia and considering that at least several of them didn't seem to be know any English beyond the very basics, I'd say there is a good chance that there are still significant bw communities that do not visit TL.

But SOME people prefer not to make changes to their registry every single time just so they can have an easier time playing broodwar You could always make a batch file that does it.

I just don't get it. Remapping the keyboard via 3rd party is ok, while it is a horrible idea to include this feature into some kind of launcher to make it easier for newcomers to get going? I don't follow the logic. How does remapping the keyboard make it easier for newcomers? It just adds another thing you have to think carefully about before you can start playing if you want to practice what you will end up using when you get better. The way it is by default, the hotkeys are the first or second letter of the unit you want to build, which is easier for new players to learn. For veteran players, it'll just be really annoying to have to retrain your muscle memory to a more optimal setup. The only person it appeals to is the person who doesn't like one or two hotkeys and wants to change them, but even for that person it won't be satisfying because now it will become standard to have to think about all sub-optimal hotkeys, including the ones you were okay with. It just feels like lose-lose all around for something that is totally meta. Having standardized controls for all users across all servers (even if different languages of StarCraft have different keys), makes things way easier. None of the keys are really obnoxious to hit, you will have to learn the muscle memory whether you remap the key or not, so you might as well learn keys you can use anywhere.
