6 month minimum time period. Alpha test server is up but we want to develop everything else too, which takes time.

It makes the game really easy for zerg. You can't balance mbs and automining with how zerg works in bw.

Good point, zerg would benefit more than other races.

All I ever wanted from Sc2 in Broodwar was setting your own hotkeys. If there was a server that could make it possible for me without a big effort I would come back to this game. Maybe it would also be a good idea to add all necessary tech-addons (fixing the graphic bug for example) in an automatic launcher update.

I do know those really dedicated to bw work around this issues but casuals like me who only played the game in lans before would really appreciate this stuff a lot. And I think everybody knows that an easy way in will create many long time followers.

People have been attempting this in BW for years, with some workable solutions. Usually you'll have to manually edit the game mpq or use a general remapping program... in essence, modifying the actual game files and using external programs to affect the gaming experience. Such practices have been deemed problematic and are not allowed in official offline competitions such as professional or semiprofessional competitions in Korea. iCCup also bans custom hotkeying.

The issue is probably still at the liberty of an individual server's administration, but the place for discussing the pros and cons of it would be another thread.

I am sorry if I went too off topic, but the posts before mine where heading in this direction.

Doesn't MBS help Terran & Protoss more than Zerg? Zerg tends to have fewer Hatcheries than T/P have Barracks/Gateways, so MBS helps less.

Not really sure about that. The 3 larva mechanic means that you have a bit of leeway in building time for Z units.

toss and terran build their production in a central place. it's easier for them to hotkey and rerally, compared to zerg having to jump all over the map past 3 bases. they also aren't forced to rally their drones to the same place as their army, so it's easier for TP to get their economy going faster in the midgame.

also being able to go 5sz and make 24 zerglings in one go is a lot easier than doing 5mmmmmm for 5 marines.

also TP also have to tab between different buildings

I think having custom hotkeys is just fine; it's not like they make too much of a big difference, besides it will attract more players.

What can NEVER happen is to implement bullshit mechanics like automining, multiple building selection and unlimited control groups.

hahah yesterday i was just thinking how much more time will have to controll armies and do battles if bw had an automining and multiple building selection :D
Now seriously, guys look at modern RTS games, new players will expect to play a game up to the modern standarts and these two will DEFINITELY be of big help for attracting newbies. I introduced BW to not a small number of people, they seem to like it but in the end most of them are like "nah man this is too hardcore for me". Friends with who i was playing at my childhood, also dont want to return cuz they have to put so much effort to build good mechanics for decent play.
At first(when sc2 was out) i was stubborn just like you, but now i think this will be good for BW.

please leave bw alone. we dont need to change the game at all. we just need a super server!

question:

will the server be located in the USA? I wonder how our latency will be if we are in Asia.

More importantly, it wouldn't be Brood War, just a mildly interesting custom map. Brood War doesn't need it's mechanics changed to attract new players, it needs to be playable without having to fuck with your router settings and registry.

I agree, I don't think these changes should be made. I was trying to argue that adding these features wouldn't lead to a greater prevalence of deathballs, because some people seemed to think so.

It will only affect your ping to the servers, not other players.

I suspect with the changing-hotkeys thing, it's the kind of thing that people would dislike when first put in but after a while no one would care because it doesn't make a big enough difference in play to matter, whereas MBS and so on do make a massive difference in play.
I aint playing on any server with hotkey changing. Manipulation of broodwar is bullshit. Play the game and get at *the game*, dont modify it to placate your whims. Doing that shit leads to the abomination that is its sequel. Changing hotkeys makes the game easier, which is something we should strive to avoid.
