[esFORCE] The Successive #1 KeSPA Ranking

<SlayerS_`BoxeR` is at the top with continuous 17 months, [ReD]NaDa with continuous 16 months>

The KeSPA ranking that started on November 2001 will end with the month of January, 2006. Starting February, there will be a new system with a different ranking that will not only incorporate the individual games, but the group games as well.

Though there was a problem in the past in the ranking, KeSPA had only actively collected data from watching the individual leagues. Because it had only calculated the individual leagues, it was possible to see which players were at the top, and which players had fallen.

One can especially see how much the first place KeSPA ranking means to the players by looking at those that had swept the first place consecutively. There have only been four players so far that had risen to first place, and at the time they were the top, showing the greatest force.

[image loading]

<The Most #1 KeSPA ranking is SlayerS_`BoxeR`>

The most consecutive first place KeSPA ranking was found to be SlayerS_`BoxeR`. Boxer had held first place in the KeSPA ranking for a consecutive 17 months, from November 2001 to March 2003. At the time, Boxer had received his second Starleague title, one second-place Starleague, two WCG titles, and was showing superb plays, and rose to the greatest rank as a star.

The one that pushed out the 17-month first place Boxer was the Pantech&Curitel [ReD]NaDa. Winning the January 2003, 2nd KPGA Tour 2002, and the February Panasonic Starleague, he changed the “Empire of Boxer.” At the time, it was also partly due to the change in the KeSPA ranking computations, limiting to just the recent one year.

Afterwards, Nada won the GameTV Starleague, and achieved the “Grand Slam.” Though Nada maintained first place for 16 months, he was short by one month from Boxer’s record.

<Generation Shift in KeSPA ranking>

The one that blocked Nada’s solo performance was iloveoov.

Oov won the November 2003 MSL, April 2004 Hanafos-Cengame MSL, and the August SPRIS MSL, rising to first place on the KeSPA ranking. Collecting the points by rising to third place for the Gillette Starleague, Oov pushed Nada out. In particular, eliminating Nada from the Hanafos-Cengame MSL greatly helped him.

Oov’s solo performance continued for 8 months. After winning the November 2004 EVER Starleague, he continued to hold first place until March 2005.

The one to block Oov was the “God of Fighters” JulyZerg. Winning second on the March 2005 IOPS Starleague, he rose to first on the KeSPA ranking on April 2005. He had previously won the Gillette Starleague and the KT-KTF Premier League, and he continued to win the EVER2005 Starleague, holding first place until January, a total of ten months.

[image loading]

2001.11~2003.3: SlayerS_`BoxeR` (17 months)
2003.4~2004.7: [ReD]NaDa (16 months)
2004.8~2005.3: Iloveoov (8 months)
2005.4~2006.1: JulyZerg (10 months)

<Regrettable 2nd Places>

There were many regrettable second place holders.

TheMarine, [NC]..Yellow, and Xellos[yG]. By a small margin, they were not able to rise to first place on the KeSPA ranking. TheMarine held second place on November 2001, but was unable to gain points thereafter and dropped gradually. Yellow’s bitter defeats in his finals were one of the key factors in his inability to rise to first place. Xellos[yG] rose four places to the second place after winning the WCG 2004 at San Francisco, but he was unable to rise to first due to his lack of winning the national leagues.

This is very very good news. I hope the new system is more innovative and reactionary than the 12 month kespa. It should be based on the results from the past 4 months imo, especially if they are taking proleague games into account.

i think its Korean e-SPorts Association

maybe the P stands for something else like Professional

thanks for the translation, this is interesting, i never really thought there was much wrong with kespa as long as you understood how their ranking worked, but adding in proleague games can only make it better
maybe it will be ELO style or something, but doubt it...

july is still in first place as of january rankings, although i think he'll drop off if he doesn't win anything in the next few months... i wonder who is dominant enough to take his place

also making it the last 4 months would be pretty weak, as that's only like one season of a starleague wtf, you might as well just look at the champions of just the most recent league if you want it like that =\\
which seems to be what most people look at anyhow actually =\\
but a longer period of time means that you have to really be dominant, KeSPa #1 is something that players really treasure... if you're handing it out to a new person every 3 months it won't be as interesting, all you'll really have to do is win your proleague games for that period + capture a league

Korean e-Sports Player's Association

I think that the current 1 month long period is decent for evaluating a player's skill.
This seems to be great news.

Still 12 months. Still points given to the winner of the tournie, 2nd place, 4S.Finalists, 8Q.Finalists, and so on. So basically... everything is same except that now they are counting the team plays (proleauge?).

As the system changes, players who participates in Proleague will increase in their rankings. Oppose to this, players who have participated but few times, and who have not participated at all are bound to fall.

There were severe changes in the rankings due to the new system in Jan. 2006. Byun Hyun Te, aka. Iris, rose up 14 ranks, Park JiHo, aka. Pusan, 10 ranks, Park Jun Suk, aka. Reach, 6 ranks. However, Lee JeHoon(ForU), Lee ByungMin(GoodFriends), Park TeMin(GoRush) were pushed down 10 to 18 ranks.

Good point. Players retire and stay in the top 30 for insane amounts of time because of that. It really isn't an indictation of current player acheivements or skill in particular.
