'Empress' Seo Ji-soo (Tossgirl) declares her retirement as an active progamer

The last female active Starcraft progamer in Korea, Tossgirl, has decided to retire. A retirement ceremony will occur at the STX Proleague match on the 17th of July.

Known for dominating female-only tournaments, she has had not much luck achieving success in normal tournaments. An active progamer since 2000, she has notably taken games off Reach and Yellow.

some other stuff about interviews, comments etc, can't be fucked translating

When was the last time she plays for STX?

Her last Proleague game was played in January 2009. So yeah, more than 3 years of nothing by now, and when you've been around since forever...

I'm pretty sure she quit pro gaming completely, meaning she won't return in SC2 or LoL. Hopefully she landed a job at a company like Reach.. (although he went back into the scene). I don't really see her being useful in the esports scene any longer. Best wishes, Jisoo.

Part of the reason she retired might be because she is not adjusting to sc2 well, so I wouldn't count on her playing it outside of kespa.

Well considering she is already at 27 years of age and she is really attractive . I believe there are many guys out there just waiting to marry her and it's also a good call for her I guess after all there is no point spending your time on playing games any more when it isn't a long term thing (the destruction of bw pro scene) . I fell in love with toss girl when I first saw klazart getting all crazy over toss girl saying how pretty she is and she plays starcraft as a professional . Till this day I hope she can expand her career to either acting or working with the media .

ToSS Girl fighting always and good luck in your future endeavour .

Nooo, Tossgirl~

People saying she should play SC2... Can you be anymore dense? If she wanted to play SC2 she was already in the perfect environment. My guess is her big dream of playing BW on TV in the normal leagues has been shattered and she's done with it. We might see her in LoL or something, but she isn't gonna leave SC2 to play SC2...

tbh I would like to see her commentating or interviewing or acting or something like that. Anything which will take advantage of her connections and her image. I wanted to see her succeed in gaming to, but it looks like the time limit has expired for her.

Who cares? If she hasn't won anything (female only tournies shouldn't count and the fact they exist is stupid) then why give her attention for just being female. Seems sexist to me, or maybe it's just the gamers who haven't seen a female/sun in a while who will miss her.

I really hoped she would play better again with SC2, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Hopefully she will somehow stay in the scene, like becoming a commentator or something.

Now this is a sad and a little unexpected news. I was hoping for more medic date interviews and stuff.

Let's put our 'LoL is the retirement avenue of BW pros' theory to the test ^_^

Retiring as a "active progamer" probably means she won't be playing anything, including SC2. This is actually good news, since the sooner she stops trying, the sooner her suffering ends. Now she can do something else like a normal girl!.

I hope she transitions nicely into gravure modelling, like secretly the rest of her fans want.

I always hoped she would actually become legitimately good, alas those dreams come to an end today.

Not that surprised tbh. Even if she wasn't notable as a female progamer, she's 27 now iirc and that's on the old side for progaming anyways.

You haters don't get it, she managed to be a practice partner at least in her achievement, as well being the sole female professional player in a male dominated scene, playing against other male pros. She's a pioneer and her determination should be admired. No other females were stubborn and determined enough to do what she did for so long.

Yea the funny thing is thats not what she looks like so wtf is this picture here.

Kinda sad, its pretty epic to have 1 female progamer, gives the scene more persona.
Other people that are like this are IdrA and maybe Day9.

It doesnt suprise me though, I have never seen her play and watched most OSLs from 2009 to 2011.

-.- Honestly worse players than her got sent out for a game or two in proleague. I think her coach never showed confidence in her, which is sad given her commitment. Especially on a team like STX, give me a break. It was a lot harder for her because she was a girl in a sexist environment, not easier. She wouldn't have become a poster girl and might be less success in terms of money and popularity, but she would have almost certainly gotten some games.

I really hope she finds something that makes her happy. I can't even imagine how hard the progaming environment must have been for her, especially being the only girl on the entire team. I admire her persistence and her dedication. The interviews with her reflected some kind of sadness imo.

That's true. You just forgot to mention that it's not normal for a guy either. What I was hinting at is that a normal girl *could*, in fact, do it. Just like a normal guy could.

I'm really glad that someone is toeing this line, the pressure and expectations on her were great, she was the only active female progamer in starcraft for a long time, she had the position of trend setter thrust upon her, unlike jaedong and others who can differentiate themselves through their skill, she had to represent an entire gender on her shoulders, and will inevitability be remembered as "tossgirl-the most famous starcraft player who was a woman", rather than "tossgirl-okay at starcraft"
So lets not bash her guys, she was alot better than large percentage of people that have ever played starcraft.

She's approaching her late 20's (she's about 27yo) and is probably experiencing the pressure most South Korean girls her age are facing in terms of getting married and starting a family. Methinks we will hear news of an engagement within the next year or so.

That sucks. I liked her, I remember when she took that special needs person out for the evening. I remember when she got surgery

I was never around to watch her play live but if she had a lot of fans she must of meant a lot to a lot of people. And sometimes, that's worth more than winning an OSL.

She was with brood war from nearly the beginning.. until nearly the end.

fuck why'd i say it like that now even i'm pretty sad.

I've always felt bad for her. She had to practice alone all the time and basically never got to play televized matches.

In her interviews she seemed lonely and sad. She was just never good enough.

its by kespa logic. the progamer status is strictly only for players who have recieved a license from kespa. since we are talking about bw, aphrodite isnt an actual progamer. im pretty sure all those players you've mention has had a license in the past making them progamer by that definition.

I don't get it. If she was going to just retire, why did she say she was quitting Medic Date so she could "practice SC2"? Not that I don't like Yeonji taking over but... I miss Medic Date :[

Not suprising. She had been at it now for like 12 years with no results, she needs to just move on with life. Curious if she will play SC2 though.

Yet another icon of the game quits. Wont be missed skill wise (who even knows how well she plays now?) but she was a fresh breeze in the otherwise so homogenous progamer world.

Sure it does, she's on a progame team. edit: although the poster above it correct, it specifically says the last Female BW progamer. Which is true.

You're still incorrect though

edit2: sorry I wasn't paying any attention when posting this hahaha. Still she wasn't the only female pro, was the point I was trying to get across haha

I think it's ridiculous that people are getting so upset about this when Tossgirl hasn't really played seriously (playing for her team and whatnot), like, in many many years.

This will make no difference. She wasn't playing before, she's not playing now, she's not playing in the future.

I like Tossgirl as much as anyone, but come on guys.

Understandable, even though it's sad. She worked very hard for a such a long time and was never able to post results. She only got attention for being female.

I guess she doesn't like SC2 either.

It's sad to see her retire, especially after reading that last Medic Date that she made with herself.

I'll always remember her for her budding romance with IdrA, as well as one of the biggest trolls I've seen on TL (Turn to page 4 after reading the OP).

Wishing her all the best!

Seconded. This is depressing somewhat but I don't think it's over for her and e-sports. I just hope she doesn't go to LoL or anything (not that I don't like LoL, I just don't play it),

so much hostility from a few guys that are butthurt for no goddamn reason. tossgirl had her place in the BW scene and community. I don't understand why so many people are so bent on placing value on a player purely through results. =/

kinda hoping she can stay active on the media side of pro gaming.

I didn't even know she was still an active progamer. When I saw those interviews (Tossgirl on Jaedong and the like) I thought "Good for her, continuing her passion by contributing in other ways."

What's with the NOOOO comments? When was the last time we saw her play a game? Are we going to really be missing that level of activity?

I think she can contribute a lot as a non pro player. There's noone quite like her. I think if she continues being involved in what she loves, she can still provide a lot to the scene, whatever it is she decides to do

You know I was just browsing this thread again to see what kind of shit would crop out and thanks to you good sir I almost gave my monitor a wash. Guys say it so many times eventually people are actually going to fucking believe them.

My God. If you've ever done any research on the matter. Hell no. They were never pro gamers. Ever. Not ever ever ever. I don't know how to make myself more clear. In Brood War they were Ammmmmateurs. Say it with me. Amateurs.

Just like the other 99.9999999 percent (actually... it would probably be even higher, but you get the point!). These guys were never even close, in fact Sean was only a prominent player back in 04-06. Even then he had problems beating such players like Sen in training. Still he was an amateur. Not making a living off of it and he finishing school as the same time like almost everyone else.

A whole whack of them were still in school and the whole going pro thing was more like a dream.

Stop believing everything you hear when they talk. They do it to make themselves look better. Nothing wrong with it. They're trying to sell themselves to the audience time and time again, but the reality is very different.

Greg got fucking lucky when Super Dan man decided to take him in.

Other guys like Assem, Leggionaire, Draco, etc. had to work their butts off for it.

Next time do us all a favor and don't speak out of your ass.

*

Now back on topic, this news of Tossgirl shouldn't be sad. I mean a lot of you guys saw this coming years ago. I cannot believe they're only announcing it now to be honest.

Apparently in SC2 everybody is a progamer, since there is no pro-license or something to legitimize it.

So maybe he means Day9 and co where progamers in SC2... go figure....

Pretty sure the idea of retirement came up in a conversation that went something like this:

"So when was the last time you played?"

"Do you ever want to play at the pro level again?"

"No."

"Well shit, announce your retirement and you'll have a good excuse to throw a huge party!"

Sad about (T)ToSsGirL. Hope she would get a chance to be a commentator or stay in the scene somehow. It must be difficult to go back to school when you're closing in on your 30's, especially in korea where unviersity diplomas is so important.

Just like the other
99.9999999 percent (actually... it would probably be even higher, but you get the point!).

Actually no. Assuming there are at least 100 progamers (less than truth) and 10 million players (more than truth), that still makes 10²/10^7 = 10^(-5). So it's rather 99.99999 %.

Back then a lot of people played Brood War my man and there were more than 100 players with pro gamers licenses as well. So once again, hi?

A little more perspective. Back in 1999 China had a population of 1.259 billion. Everyone didn't play on B.Net as well. If one percent of China's population played (it was one of the biggest markets after all, bootlegged or not) then you would have 12.59 million people who have at least played it.

In July 2001, South Korea's population was 47,904,370. PC Bangs spread like a wildfire at the turn of the millenium and it was a very youthful nation as well:

- 0-14 years: 21.59% (male 5,475,453; female 4,864,918)

- 15-64 years: 71.14% (male 17,291,202; female 16,789,380)

These two nations alone whether it PC Cafe or bootlegged copies puts that statistic in reach.

Back then each official server had at least 100,000+ games going at a time.

This doesn't include the Polish, Russian, Chinese and other private servers during the games peak.

It's easily over ten million. Casual or not.

"Well shit, announce your retirement and you'll have a good excuse to throw a huge party!"

Didn't she play in the OSL prelims? She got knocked out straight away but still

Don't teams have a bunch of practice partners who are on the team even if they don't play matches?

Argghghgh, the person that made me play Starcraft retires... The person that motivated me to hit D+.... after all the years that I played Starcraft on iCCup...

Worst day in the world. Broodwar is officially dead (to me anyways)!
