Nal_Ra who worked as a starcraft commentator that enlisted in the army will come back to the scene in a new game.
Nal_Ra will officially debut commentating on July 3rd for the OGN Azubu League of Legends: The Champions 2012 Round of 16.
Nal_Ra is a starcraft progamer who debuted his commentating for MBCGame back in October 2009. In 2010 he enlisted for his military service and after 2 years, he will come back as a commentator not for starcraft, but for League of Legends.
Nal_Ra played quite a bit of League of Legends during his service and is known to have played many games. He was split between Starcraft Brood War, Starcraft2, and League of Legends but he took OGN's offer to try a new scene in League of Legends.
Nal_Ra will return as a commentator for OGN by commentating for Azubu LoL:The Champions 2012 Summer alongside Caster Jun Yong Joon and Kim Dong Joon. Kim Dong Joon and Nal_Ra have been friends since the days of GO (BW Team) but they never showed teamwork in commentating before. Nal_Ra filled in the spot for Kim Dong Joon when he enlisted in the military as a commentator of MBCGames. By the time Nal_Ra enlisted Kim Dong Joon was done with his service so this will be the first time the two commentators will work alongside each other in the Azubu LoL: The Champions 2012 Summer.
After a honorary discharge from the military, Nal_Ra participated in the OSL Legends Match but most of his times have been focused into League of Legends. He even visited the participating team's training houses to learn more about the players and their play styles so he can prepare himself better for commentating League of Legends.
Nal_Ra stated "It's not easy to just change into a new scene but I'll trust in Kim Dong Joon and Jun Yong Joon and follow their footstep." He continued by saying "There might be some awkward moments during my commentating but I will try my best so I hope people can understand."

One of the very few in the entire bw world who can do whatever the fuck he wants and we are required to smile and let him do whatever the fuck he wants.
plz don argue about which game is better btween lol sc2 bw etc and how lol is shit and he should be with bw/sc2 etc this thread just to inform of glorious snot toss return to the korean esports scene and we should celebrate it instead of whining ty.
Nal_Ra still one of my favorite players of all time. It was so awesome (yet bittersweet) watching him in Old Boy... glad he's found something to do in progaming after his time in the military, and I hope he enjoys himself. Seeing himself play SC2 would have been a bit too painful for me.
He was an OGN commentator before he left anyhow, so it's a pretty natural transition, game aside. But nothing would have been a replacement for BW as it is.

eh, not really true. I want to link this thread linked by oopsoopsbaby in the Grape forming LoL team thread because it seems to be a really good explanation of things and the evolution of dota in korea (i.e. koreans played a dota clone Chaos)
I don't know timeline but basic jist is chaos grew big, had some weird issues with map triggers with warcraft patches, and I imagine when riot started advertising LoL and getting into pc bangs that's much better than "hey join this invite only beta which needs steam which korean pc bangs probably don't have and your friends might not have".

lol you're fucking pathetic. The man just got out of the army. He needed a job. This is the position OGN offered him. He doesn't owe anyone anything. It's his life, his career, and his living to make. If being employed is "selling out," then enjoy being a sellout yourself.

Ahaha you caught me there. So Nal_Ra played some LOL during his military service. You'd think they'd still be able to find someone from the professional ranks to hire considering LOL has been out for a while now.

it was stated in one of the documentaries about Korean LoL that they want casters who have experience with the game but specifically won't be top players because it will make their commentary simpler and more excited

I really don't see the appeal of professional LoL. I understand that its really casual friendly, all my casual friends play it. Professionally though I think it'd be not so great skill cap wise, oh well. At least he enjoys it, and gets paid. I'd probably do the same for a game I enjoyed if I could.
EDIT: title changed xD, just posted this really late after leaving it open.
on a side note, people should really stop bashing on LoL or Nal_ra's choice. Should respect his decision and root for him to be as loved in the LoL community as he was in the BW community. And LoL is a different game. Mechanically easier (most, if not all the time), but definitely takes a different set of skills. Team coordination is huge and I can't wait to see what the practice powerhouse koreans have in store. So much has yet to be tried and discovered and it's still growing and developing.
I'm happy to see Nal_Ra getting back into casting but why did he change from the best and hardest game in the world to a game that takes no skill to play and causes brain seizures?
It's been clear since the start of the Champions series that OGN want to make LoL their flagship broadcast game post-BW. They've occupied the Wednesday/Friday night slots (previously held by the OSL) and most OGN personalities have switched from casting/hosting BW to LoL.
God i hope this doesn't kill his career. I care for him as a personality I've known for a decade, and if this ruined it I'd be truly hurt. I won't watch his casts either way because I don't enjoy the platform but I really want him to succeed at any rate.
Shame we won't see him play either starcraft 2 or even lol but after all I think it is the step in right direction to be able to secure some sort of career stability at least for few years. Good luck rA, keep dreaming!
Good for Nal_Ra, glad to see things worked out for him after returning from the army. I just wish it wasn't LoL, as I don't like Riot and wish their game would fail.
Had a feeling this would happen since the Legends Match. This news is not really that unexpected for a variety of reasons. Of his peers (other BW legends), most have continued their involvement in esports, and of those most have moved to LoL. Yellow&Reach have their teams and others have tried the game (July). I doubt he accepted OGN's offer right away, he probably has talked it out with others first. So if this is his educated decision then I support him. Good luck Kang MIn! Also OGN is pushing LoL really hard:

Losing the prime broadcast slots hurt, but considering the popularity of the game in Korea it was a natural transition I suppose.
I'm puzzled by the fact that so many seems to think this is bad news. I mean, I don't care about him commentating lol, but I can't see how him taking another route would make me happy either.
right decision for him, LoL will most likely have the brighter future in korea, compared to sc2 hopefully Dota2 will be a success in kr. I hate LoL...(24/7 farming/1 big fight->gg)
What did you guys expect of him ? Force OGN's hand to get to cast a less popular game which is apparently not working very well on OGN and which they already have many commentators for ? I'm happy he still has a place on OGN, good luck to him, and I still love you Kang Min.
Nal_ra is no more, he can only be found in old vods of a dieing game. Once, long ago, giants walked this earth. They are gone now, never to be seen again. Keep their memory safe.
Yay nalra! Kind of wanted to see him come back as a player, but realistically that was probably not going to happen. Glad the network kept him in mind and he's got a job back from military.
This seems like the best decision, LoL is very popular in S.Korea and more so then Sc2 who already have a bunch of casters but not alot of tournaments.
I wonder though, what if BW hadn't almost died out now, would he return as a progamer in BW?

Yo dawg, I heard there's quite a lot of money to be won in League. No skill = EZPZ right? Gonna go win me some cash
How much League have you actually played? Or anyone for that matter who is bashing on LoL? Everyone is very 'YEAH, GO ESPORTS' but what they really mean is SC2*. How many other esports have you watched, much less even tried to play.
If you're looking for a reason, it's because LoL is hot shit in Korea and they take it damn seriously (acceting foreign teams directly into all of their competitions for example). Surely the trend towards this game tells you SOMETHING about Korean mentality (or the mentality of the 13million+ active League accounts right now).
Why not get off your high horse. When it was BW 'elitists' bashing on the casualness of SC2, SC2 fans defended their game relentlessly and the BW fans were told to back off. How about showing a bit of the same decorum and respect for the fans of the game you deem as being casual and taking no skill...

I really wish LoL was a better game and I could actually get behind it. I have tried it a couple times and I just can't find anything esports worthy there... is it more worthy than Sc2? Maybe. Sometimes I feel like the only reason I played Sc2 at all was because people tried to make it an esport.
Maybe if Blizzard hadn't spent the last few years taking Korean esports companies to court we'd have Nal_Ra in Sc2.
problem is a moba game isnt a good spectator sport, so its hard to accept it as a legit e-sport, though for LoL it doesnt matter since their are like 30+mil active accounts or something crazy.
still a shame to not see him play sc2, wouldda been cool to see him again.
Just curious, is it there a particular reason why he just has two parts in his name, instead of three?
Korean "first" (actually last) names can have one or two characters, because they're based on the Chinese system. Some names just happen to consist of one character, nothing more.
My reaction : it's really sad if you have to resort to such extremeties to earn your daily bread after chosing the path of a progamer. What a sad job, in the end.

Not surprising at all that nal_ra was given a spot at casting league of legend as a fan of these old school players having nal_ra,yellow and reach at LoL is a good thing and the only thing we are missing is boxer . Can't wait for boxer to create LoL team and be successful at managing the team .

yeh but when you think how many people play LoL, thats hardly any of the playerbase.
you're also misunderstanding what 'spectator sport' is. LoL isnt spectator friendly at all unless you play and know whats happening, unlike sc2 where its like "oh, this guy has the bigger army and more bases therfore he is winning" etc where you dont necessarily need to play in order to see whos doing better, obviously its deeper than that though but its just an example.

Dude, just let it go. SC2 is/won't be as big as LoL. Accept it, see the reason for yourself and make Blizzard change their attitude. If you can't, then say goodbye to SCToo.

The writing has been on the wall for sometime now. This should really come as no surprise if you follow the other games.
You can be fans of both. The only thing I don't like about mobas is that games are a good 30 minutes + not including break/setup for the next game time so you wait 40-60 minutes a game which is roughly 2x the amount of time of an average SC/SCII game with setup and tear down. So viewer fatigue is a big issue for me.

I still remember Xenics Storm vs MiG Frost OGN Spring Champions semifinals. That went the full 5 sets, the games went past midnight, yet the place was still packed. Mind you, public transportation, for the most part, shuts down after midnight in Korea.
That series is still the best series I have ever seen in LoL.

I honestly don't think people (at least in korea) give a damn about whether something is 'spectator sport' or not. Sc2 in korea looks like it's headed downhill. And the fact that you have to buy WoL to play HotS (i.e pay $100) doesn't really help esports grow.

Wooh! Cool news! Seeing as how I really like LoL as well as BW and SC2, I don't really care all too much about that "Oh noes! LoL is evil/bad/the dark side!!11111" but am rather happy to see it doing so well
Anyone else that thinks sc2 wouldn't be #1 even if LoL didn't get into KeSPA and they acquired something else like DOTA2 or some popular game in Korea that can be played competitive? I just have that feeling that LoL skyrocket so hard not just because they find it fun and for the social aspect but also because they are a bit sick of Starcraft and if they ain't even gonna have the chance to watch BW, the superior Starcraft version and what they know and prefer, why even bother with sc2 you know?
Maybe I'm just out of the loop here but it just feels like SC2 was doomed to fail either way and the koreans jumped on the chance to follow something new.

To be honest, a 5v5 team fight in LoL is a lot more chaotic than a 200 vs 200 in Sc2, and even the fights in Sc2 looks retardedly fast and chaotic compared to BW

It's not about seeing who's doing better, it's about understanding Why one is doing better. There's no way to deny that for a non LoL player it is nearly impossible to understand what is actually going on during a battle. In starcraft, it can be easily seen "Well he had a better position" or "Well he had more stuff" instead of "well they had better items" or "well these hero's work better together". The latter takes either more understanding of the game or a commentator who is going to repeat what the items do every game, which is not exactly a good thing.

You say it as if SC2 is so much more straightforward. There are plenty of times where the "bigger" army doesn't win (e.g. immortal/stalker army vs a maxed roach army). Or you can make the case of drop play with a smaller standing army can eventually win over a bigger immobile army. I think you take for granted your own SC2 knowledge and assume "everyone" will be able to discern who is in a better position or not. Both games are/can be confusing for someone that does not watch those respective games. It's way too presumptuous to assume SC2 is any easier to understand WHY someone is doing better than LoL or any other game with strategy.

Yeah, I know. This was feigned misunderstanding. All I've wanted to say is that SC2 fans really should not cry "Betrayal!1!" when a BW legend switches to a dumbed down game solely to earn money. Rocks in glass houses and all that.

Okay, guys, anyone saying this means that Korea thinks SC2 has no future is wrong. It just means Nal_ra likes LoL more. Like, that's it. There's nothing more to be read in to.

This is just what you want to believe. But deep down there you know that LoL is the new overlord and in the end it will "kill" SC2 (along with Blizzard and their stupidity) in a way or another. Otherwise you would never felt like you needed to defend SC2.

I don't think BW sucks and I enjoyed the (limited) amounts I've watched but that's what your analogy is stating.

If someone said BW is a crappy game, I would take the gentleman gesture and ask him "What is your favorite game?". Come back with as much research I can possibly get. Then next time we meet, I will slowly but painfully dissect that game and tear it right in front of his face while holding on a calm posture.
Dota2 is still extremely new, and anyway I think Valve's focus with Dota2 is currently mainly on China. LoL has a much bigger presence in the scene, especially in places that don't have a previous Dota1 base. I'm not surprised LoL is doing well in Korea.

On top of that, the arguments between these sides have been exactly the same since forever:
SC2 vs LoL: LOL claims they are better since they have more viewes/playerbase SC2 claims they are better because it requires more skill and that the players and viewers are worth more since they are ready to invest more money (Its the whole free vs non free)
SC2 vs BW: BW claims that they are more right since its the "original" game and it actually requires skill and that SC2 is killing BW. SC2 Claims that they are newer and that innovation was required since SC:BW was getting too old and basically had no future in the Wester scene and was dying in Korea.
DoTA2 v. LoL not even worth commentating about, it's just "BLARRGH BLARRGH THIS REQUIRE MORE SKILL THAN YOURS BLARRGH".
You could actually predict ahead of time what argument each side will choose to use when the debate starts.

THe only thing that bugs me about the competitive LoL scene is the fanbase does not really seem acknowledge how different of an impact free 2 play can have in both a positive and negative sense. There really isn't a whole like a precident for this for hardcore games so it seems really premature to be beating the drums and launching the fire works. Especially, from a community and business sense, it seems they are SEVERELY underestimating Valve's capabilities.
Riot advertises and puts the competitive stream right at the splash screne after logging in, hypothetically, valve could do something similar, except with steam. The valve factor is being over looked here.

blizzard doesn't give a crap that they killed SC2 in korea.
as long as they're getting money from people broadcasting their game. As opposed to Riot who not only lets people broadcast for free, but also helps in some cases.

Allright, let's get serious. DId he not retire in order to become a teacher at the Seoul Institue of Arts 'not sure of the name) ? What of it ? Surely that job could not be as lowly as his next one. Did he choose to quit it, was he not needed any more, did someone take his place while he was in the army ? Thanks to anyone who can answer.
Glad he got a job in esports. I think he made the right pick, sc2 is successful internationally but not so much in sk. LoL looks to have a lot more potential over there even though it's kind of bad.
Time really passes quickly. It doesn't feel that long ago when I watch the Old Boy show with the final episode being his sendoff. Heck he has the potential to be good at LoL if he wanted to play professionally. The stuff he does with protoss spell units like arbiter/hallucination just illustrate how quick he can be at thinking creatively.

The fuck are you even talking about? He retired and became a commentator. He worked for MBCGame for a year and then moved to OGN. You guys don't know what you're talking about if you think Nal is going to LoL because he thinks Sc2 is a bad game. Chances are that he's retired from pro-gaming in general and doesn't want to bother with a game that requires even a similar amount of skill.
You all can argue how you like, but at the end of the day League of Legends is an objectively easier game to play/learn than that of the Starcraft series. Top that off with the fact that it's free and you have the perfect brooding ground for retired professional players.
Think of it as if you had a Masters degree in Mathematics and got a high paying job to teach it in 5th grade. It would be so simple for you to do and the reward would be so high that it doesn't matter that the people you are teaching aren't University students.

Lol stop fooling yourself.. Moba games are about teamwork and communication. Any game that competitors practice 8-10 hours a day is naturally going to be fucking hard.
Hey just a question. Now with the korean scene booming when it comes to LoL and OGN going all in with it, how many KeSPA teams have LoL squads right now? The only one I know is CJ. How many companies outside of KeSPA have teams? Or is the team situation more like it is in the korean sc2 scene?
Have a look at that page. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=101653 Now you obviously know about his carrier better than me, but if anyone had informations about that project I'd be interested (apparently 2010 is also when he started the army ?).
And I don't consider commentating an esport to be a lowly job, but I don't consider AOS to be esports either. I'm definitely not on the wrong site.

A few of the Korean SC2 team have LoL teams as well - StarTale (Fruitdealer as a coach), MVP (3 teams), and IM. And then there are teams named after sponsors such as Azubu (2 teams), Xenics (Yellow's team), and NaJin (2 teams with Reach as a coach).

It was more of a general analogy for retiring pro's going to LoL, hooking on to the fact that Nal_ra will undoubtedly play it in his spare time.

Unless you have some secret metric for measuring skill in two games that are not even similar in the slightest(teamwork is non-existant in SC and its not something that can be compared between the two games), I would avoid making a statement that is going to be percieved as flame bait by a large amount of people.
Also your analogy does not translate to this situation at all and you have no information to make such a claim. It's kind of insulting to players of league as well.

Teamwork alone won't even make up for the macro portion of Starcraft in terms of skill. Are you seriously going to take this argument?

Granted you can learn like 5 heroes quickly, you're going to constantly be up against probably like 40 different heroes on the opposing team/your teammates and you need have a vague familiarity with what they do to be effective with your team/against other team.
This is mainly directed at "learning" the game you had in your previous quote. I won't argue that masters is more difficult than LoL-- I haven't actually played LoL but played some dota 2-- but learning the moba games to get to a halfway decent spot is harder than sc2, unless you do hold a good standard of what is good in sc2 (but if masters is supposed to be like top 4?%, most outside observer's can't describe that as "good"). BW isn't hard to learn either, but the mechanics is a lot harder to get to like d+ (~mid diamond to low masters mechanically).
so "objectively easier to learn" is entirely wrong, imo. To play yes, but only if you're defining being able to play as being like high diamond/masters, which an outside observer would not say at all.

I'm saying there is no possible way for you to compare the two games and the fact you that replied to my post without any evidence, proves your using a straw man argument.( I want a better argument than the tired "well isn't it obvious" answer.)
I'm not aware of any device or method of measuring skill, especially when core game mechanics are inherently different from one another.
For example do reasonable people say that baseball requires more skill than basketball? No, because they require different skill sets. The same is true for LoL and SC2; why anyone would have an argument over which requires more skill is ridiculous.

In league of legends you buy an item and right click some dudes before they die, I can simplify shit too it's fucking magical.
Stating that there are 80-100 heroes to learn is also complete bullshit taking into consideration that most of their spells and abilities are relatively similar. Vague familiarity is exactly right, you don't need to do hours of research to adapt to a hero you're playing against that's going to use like 4 abilities which are most likely similar to eachother (Poison heroes all seem to degrade armor and have DoTs for ex.).
You state it as an argument of learning, but you don't seem to comprehend the fact that "learning" Starcraft 2 isn't just making Marines and tanks at the start of the game and a-moving into the other guys base.

Any game that competitors practice 8-10 hours a day is naturally going to be fucking hard.
Okay, bragging aside, I think it's kindof interesting that all these old Brood War legends are now doing stuff in LoL. Reach, Yellow, and Xellos are all managing or coaching LoL teams, and now Nal rA is going to be casting it.. many of the SC2 team coaches are also coaching their LoL teams as well. The ones who switched early, such as Boxer, NaDa, July, Daezang, Oversky (the last 2 were less well known but played for Air Force Ace and became casters at GSL) switched to SC2, and it seems like the ones who didn't get in on SC2 with Gom are now doing LoL instead.. I wonder if there is a reason. Of course, then you have Oov and others like him who are just going to move on and coach SC2 (or cast it like GoRush) now that Kespa is switching. Either way, I'm glad that there are opportunities for these legends to use their laurels to stay in eSports if they want (some have just retired, gone into military, gone back to school, etc).
I hope people can realize that the divide between the Starcraft and LoL communities doesn't really exist except in the minds of a minority of haters. It's all eSports, it's all good..
i used to think like most of the people here, then i tried LoL, it's pretty fun, and i didn't like dota, so I don't know, and i don't like sc2 either :d

League of Legends?!?! It isn't even a good game?! Have some personal respect and honor. Don't just cast some random shitty game because ogn will pay you.
Shameful. I have lost a lot of respect for the flower toss, and this saddens me.
YellOw leaving saddened me a lot, and I also lost a lot of respect for him after quitting sc2 so easily.
Sad to see these legends leaving their legacies behind for the dota's ugly stepchild.

Channel your anger at Browder et all, don't blame players for not getting excited about SC2 or for having a horrible pricing strategy vis-a-vis broodwar.

ya guys he doesnt want to go to sc2 because he doesnt like it le* xd roflmao xddddd is 2 expnsive ---
Seriously? He got a good offer in a game that won't take long to learn, not that he has a mounting hatred for a game within what I can assume is his favorite series.
Too many people in this thread making assumptions about what the guy feels/likes/thinks. Since you can't be all right, I'm going to have to assume a lot of you guys are wrong.
