I'm all for watching more BW from HD, but IMO the time has long passed where we need to "grow the BW scene". That time is over, I'm going to let it pass. Let the diehards always be the diehards and appreciate our first love... trying to get new blood interested in a 13 year old, graphically relatively unattractive game (comparably to competitive games of the last few years) especially when its cute heir is struggling so hard to make it big, would be an exercise in futility.
I started playing broodwar 2 weeks ago because i got bored of sc2, and I have much more fun playing broodwar. Broodwar is not only for diehard, I enjoy the game more and it's not my first love, sc2 was my first competitive rts. I'm not playing a game to make "esport" or whatever big, I'm playing to have fun, and I will watch sc2 streams if I feel it entertains me I don't feel like I have an obligation to do so. tl dr: I played sc2, then broodwar. I prefered broodwar, i will not go further in this debate but I need to say that bw is not only for diehards.
trust me, after a few weeks you'll be picking up sc2 again. i played bw before sc2 came out, then played sc2, then bw for a while because it got boring, but now im back to sc2. i mean i wont say it's only for diehards, people could come back to play it just for something different, especially those who havent played it before. In the end though i do believe the graphics plus improved, more user friendly mechanics in sc2 will bring them back to it.
Both games have their appeals. Some people like one and not the other, many (myself included) like both.
I've found, though, that MBS and the easier mechanics don't make SC2 any more enjoyable, but the clock totally does, because I can get a sense of timings very easily. I never know when the hell to expect mutas in bw TvZ, and I'm always a little too late with turrets. Game sense comes with experience, of course, but it's just my personal feelings on the matter.
scan/scout and then check spire health?? It's not terribly difficult ..
if you REALLY want that clock, there's always w/Mini/Chaoslauncher that has an in-game timer feature you can use (ICCup launcher sucks lol)
its cool that HD is doing this but I really wish that he would put atleast a little bit of effort into learning how BW works. I feel like he's just makes shit up when hes casting.

Pretty sure hes just referring to the old days meaning when he played, aka when I played 12 hatch was the standard but im not 100% sure if its still the case today.

I think he's mentioned several times before that he's played and used to keep up with the scene before, but that was some time ago. Reading the comments in some of the other videos, I hope this doesn't bring in the wrong crowed. I dont play BW very much, but everyone here seems really nice compared to any SC2 site/network (oh god reddit...)

I agree that it's something, I'm not arguing that one is better than the other (some aspects of broodwar are frustrating as hell), I just say that broodwar feels more entertaining to me. What I like in broodwar are the micro possibilities, the fact that a 200/200 feels really really big and that you can effectively control space. The interface is frustrating and the control are betters in sc2 but this is only a small part of what's making a game. My problem with sc2 is that I feel that the output of the game is decided to quicly: you don't have a lot of time where the tension is building, it's really really rare to have combacks in sc2 when someone has a big food deficit . I think that if anything would make me switch to sc2 again it's the difficulty to find opponents with the same skill than me (low D) on Iccup.
MVP vs Hoekins was effing sick, every broodwar lover should watch it.
I don't really blame HD about the queens and hydras bit as that is quite a recent development, people should get off his nuts. He has great obsing skills too.
The one thing he missed commentary on was the hold lurkers, and MVP map hack scanned them and kill them. That was my favorite part.
The MVP/Hoekins game was the first time in years I've watched a BW game and gone "holy shit, I didn't know that was viable". It's an exciting feeling. I'll have to try that style later this week.
