According to TIG, there would be no more MSL in the near future.
The article mentioned that MBC Game has been preparing for "channel switch" from gaming to music, which it's been reported at July, 2011 by TIG. Recently, for that reason, MBC game underwent some internal restructuring and made a contract with one of the music tune website, hiring the producer who specialize at music-related programming.
The article states all e-sports league (MSL, Tekken Crash, STX Cup) from MBC Game which are still in progress, those would be the last run and no more new-or-continued e-sports league from them in the future. All BW or gaming-related programming like (Sungchoon Show, Star infinite Challenge, Show! Funny Replay, etc) are also shutting down.
Even if the player for MSL are already determined through Survivor Tornament and still in progress, but it seems the hosting of MSL is nearly impossible.
The article also states that MBC Game was trying to do their best to follow their policy like "If there is a league still in progress, we will see it to the end." commented by an anonymous MBC Game employee. But it said that they failed to made a deal with several companies or corporations for sponsoring MSL.
An anonymous MBC Game employee also commented that BW-based e-sports league has been facing an severe downturn and we kept trying to continue BW league even if the only thing we had is a deficit. But since MBC Game decided to switch the channel from gaming to music, there would be no way to continue MSL with a deficit again.
By the way, the article states that MBC game also give up the broadcasting of Proleague 11-12. MBC Game did discuss about the broadcasting of Proleague with KeSPA. But they decide not to broadcast Proleague 11-12.
well it's expected that these would happen, so now we are left with ogn broadcasting proleague than what happens to msl caster and tv production crew jobless ?

hopefully some other channel will step up and want to broadcast PL with OGN, and they will need a crew to run it... :\

I am seriously going to miss the msl T_T , the comic was being hopeful of the situation at hand .We all know that kpop is the ultimate killer.
I feel like my heart just broke again. I kept holding onto that tiny flicker of hope, that maybe they'd pull it through just one last time. It feels like such an unceremonious end, to just cancel after all the players made it through survivor and no goodbye episode or whatever. I hope OGN is doing better and won't end up following the same path any time soon.

MSL was really the first tournament that drew me in fully to the Korean scene, I always liked everything better about MSL than OSL. I watched pretty much all of Arena, when I got first really introduced to the pro-scene. Still remember the intensity and edge-of-the-seat feeling I got from watching Kal and fOrGG's Round of 8 match. And the awe I felt watching fOrGG take down Flash (lol14ccEVERYgame) and then Jaedong 3-0 (huwha???).
Since then I've always made a point to follow MSLs even if I wasn't fully paying attention. It feels like a piece of me died today.
No chances to cut costs by hosting the tournament in a pc bang? Even if the prizes are small, some of the progamers might still continue just because it is the last "MSL" (although the switch to sc2 might have eaten into their practice hours).
sadly expected and lamented, only the thought of SC1 pros going to SC2 serves as a solace for this. But, i don't even think it makes up for the slow disembodiment of broodwar.
I wonder how much it costs to sponsor an MSL... This is really a self-fulfilling prophecy. Even if there were companies interested in sponsoring the MSL back in June, who would want to sponsor the league after news about the channel closing down leaked in July. -_-
In other, more positive news: MBC's Elite School League is underway. They completed the offline Ro32/Ro64 last week. Live broadcasts of the Ro16 and beyond are slated to begin on 20th November according to the Elite website. Once I have the schedule for the Ro16, I will make a thread about it. Hopefully someone can stream this and it can be added to the calendar.

This is pretty sad news.... it's like a piece of all our lives suddenly ending... like how all good relationships come to a heartbroken end...... or like when you finish this really epic Korean drama or TV series and find out there won't be a sequel.... or like how after spending countless hours on a game, something horribly goes wrong and the game itself is forever corrupted and destroyed and unplayable ever again.... then you try to buy the game again from the store but they have either been discontinued or sold out without anymore coming....
It's like a nightmare come true....
RIP MSL and MBC Game.... I suppose it's time to smell the coffee for us and finally turn the page to the next chapter of the holy book of Broodwar....
MSL > OSL in recent tournaments. Better format, better maps. I was still holding out for one final tournament. Even if they brought the progamers to a simple PC Bang and made the prize money really cheap I think the progamers would compete out of honor and respect for the MSL tradition. Can this not be arranged?

Great idea, but i think mbc doesn't want to deal anything with broodwar anymore they are focusing on kpop exclusive programme and too busy to hear our cries.
Sad. R.I.P. MSL. Glad Flash managed to get the golden badge before it died at least. Shame no one will ever have the chance to break through and get the 4th one.
This doesn't suck as much for me since we all knew it was coming. I'll miss the commentators the most, hopefully they'll be hired back into Starcraft somehow.
Even though I started following BW (and Starcraft in general) quite late (2nd half of 2010 and onwards), it's sad to see MSL go so soon after I began following the scene. I at least am happy that I stayed up to watch the last finals live in the middle of the night. Hopefully, OGN or some other company can step it up and fill the void left by the loss of MBCGame.
I think another channel will step in and help out for PL.... And maybe they'll run their own tournament.... who knows. I remain optimistic. Still sad though.
Sad for esports in general. Its not like they take 1 game and replace it with another one (eg. stop BW switch to SC2), they shut broadcasting esports entirely to focus on music... ;( ;( ;( ;( ;(
Plus i enjoyed every little bit of BW i could watch

its an old and very unfunny joke, dont worry about it
BLIZZARD. SPONSOR THIS LAST MSL AND WE'LL LOVE YOU FOREVER T__T
I'll even promise to buy all the SC2 expansions when they come out. Come on, you know you want to. Blizzard MSL 2011, doesn't that just sound exquisite?

I was thinking the same. Then I thought that we could easily find 3000 people in the world that would do the same. SC2 + expansions = 100$ minimum. We could instead send 3000 * 100 $ to MBCGame. That should be enough.
I mean I wouldn't complain about Bliz sponsoring the MSL obviously, but an MSL sponsored by the fans would be the sickest proof of love. I mean I've spent so much time watching MSL and it didn't cost me anything...

Could TL create a fund ?!
Nice idea,but...No... Prizes + organization costs including payment of all commentators and other MSL stuff... It`s really not something that a TL fund can support . Hopefully we will have someone who can continue where MSL stoped,so that OSL doesn`t become the only league in Korea.
Damn this is a sad thing. When the story first leaked that this might happen I hoped, along with may others I suspect, that it would not turn out, but as soon as the story emerged that Kespa was looking at SC2 and then BW players were confirmed to be practising I knew that MSL was almost certainly doomed and Kespa were looking to SC2 to provide another event.
Its tragic but, if the viewer numbers were sliding then it was inevitable I suppose
progaming was never meant to last forever. Progaming in Korea was built around BW and to see it go is a sign that people will soon be too busy with games and just play for fun and not care about who the best in the world is at any game.
I feel if savior was still around as well as boxer, hwasin luxury yellow, this wouldnt happen. a drastic change needs to happen in bw if its gonna be revitalized. we either need Bisu Jaedong Stork Flash Jangbi defending vs a new generation of dominant players or something. Or a Mysterious Foreigner powerhouse team suddenly appearing in korea to make shit interesting. can only hope
Send scan sziky ace, beamface, koll to korea to fight

Realistically speaking I don't think they will even take one 1 game of the top pro's in korea .

We can only hope that's the case, having only OGN to broadcast all of proleague will put immense pressure on them.
Crazy talk from lack of BW in over a month, in my opinion. It only proves that TL user's brains do not function intelligently without BW.
I'm not giving up hope yet. Finish the MSL, more OSLs to come, and a proleague (which of course isn't having BW players play SC2 in addition to SC2 because whoever thinks that is honestly two pieces of bread short of a sandwich [a mess of condiments and sandwich meat]). There will be sponsorship value to 'the very last MSL.' Even if it has to be broadcasted on OGN.
There's your dose of optimism. Where there's a will, there's a way. Where there's a way there's hope. Where there's hope there's a chance at victory. You're all weak, weak BW fans even if you end up being right. Say goodbye to MSL when MSL themselves says they're done. Who cares what journalists think?
I do feel that besides the sponsorship problem, the upper management at MBCplus are simply not committed to completing this MSL. The conversion of the MBC practice room into a "music center" (whatever that is) as early as August indicates where their interests are.
MSL could use a bailout right about now to be honest At least it would go to a good cause. Koreans, lobby the Ministry of Culture perhaps? They helped finance some tourneys, didnt they?

You are right chef .... we shouldn't be in the doom and gloom attitude we are having right now .
I knew this was coming but I told myself that I was wrong and it will never happen... Just when I'm about to go to bed this happens, how can I wake up tomorrow in time for class WHYYY edit:spelling
On November 04 2011 00:22 a176 wrote: some of you seem surprised? wasn't this kind of given with mbc shutting down?
At the time, the only info released was that MBCGame would transition into a Music Channel in early 2012. Since Survivor was in August, there would have been plenty of time to finish one last MSL before MBCGame shut down. So yeah, we were still holding onto some last bit of hope that we'd at least have like, a farewell MSL or something.
I just died a little... God damn I got into Starcraft from MSL, sAviOr vs Bisu yo... Now it's gone... All the drama, all the hype. Power outages, JD getting 3-0ed by fOrGG, Kal somehow never winning a single game vs Jaedong... It was all so good, so amazing. Now it's taken away from me...
A bit F-U to kpop right now... Hopefully we can see the return of the MSL soon... Or Korean Air could take over somehow and make a new SL... the KASL!!! (haha it sounds like castle...)
dont blame kpop plz, it isnt that becouse of kpop they swichts to it, its that every singel good sponser/team are going to sc2 and they think there wont be enough profit for them. so plz dont blame kpop cuzz without sc2 they still would be running happly!!!
You've been good to us, MSL. I'll always cherish the awesome matches that you produced. At least we still have SC2 leagues, OSL and PL... If Kespa didn't shut down GOMTV Classic then the damage to the scene wouldn't have been THIS bad. In the end, fuck Kespa for cutting down the lifespan of the scene at least by 5 years. EDIT: INB4 HURR DURR SC2 SUX IT WILL NEVER BE GOOD AS BW EDIT2: I forgot about Tekken Crash... It's going to be gone too. ;_;
like I said in another thread, if GOM and Blizzard were to get together to host a last MSL it would be the smartest thing they could do to help themselves with the BW community. You could even transition it into a SC2 league (though it would probably have to be called something else, doubt MBC would allow the title to be used) down the road, though that may not be the ultimate goal in the end.
For MBC, mediocre music that has far too much broadcasting already is apparently more important than the country's 3rd most popular professional sport. >_> Idiots.
I wonder if Kespa is going to try to get a new broadcaster for a starleague. It's quite advantageous to have a government agency managing competitive gaming.
Bye MSL. It was pleasure to watch you. Despite that PO, one time... MBC lowered its status to KPop business TV. I hope the commentator will be hired by OGN.
So is this official confirmation or just more speculation? I can't keep reading the same awful news every time a different source throws it out there, it's too much
You'd think that this being the last MSL would make it more attractive to sponsors, since there will be more interest in the tourney and the sponsors will look like heroes to the fans. Without really knowing anything about the situation, I can't help but feeling this has more to do with the interests of the execs at MBC Plus. Maybe that's just my bias speaking though. God this sucks.
This is really sad, but I hope people will be more positive. It's extremely sad to see this, but the game doesn't die if people keep playing it. I played SC2 since release, I didn't know anything about competitive StarCraft until SC2 was out and I still came to appreciate BW over it in every way. Others can too, and nothing forces any of us to switch to a game we don't enjoy as much. As much as I love watching BW, I would still play it if the top players switched to SC2. People say all good things must come to an end, but it's obvious that a lot of people still have passion for the game. Unless that passion disappears, that would suggest the game still has a future.
We won't know where BW will be in a year or two for a while, so please don't jump to conclusions. A lot of people play SC2 because it's what everyone else did, or maybe they never gave BW a chance (most haven't). Maybe like me and many other new players, they will, and they might find something they like. I think because it's a video game, people assume it goes obsolete unlike a physical sport, and that no matter what it will eventually be replaced. Well how do we know? How do we know the BW scene will just disappear and never return? IdrA saying BW was the "real game", so many people saying they hope that SC2 will be what BW was. And if it doesn't, nothing will stop them from coming back.
TLDR: Cheer up guys, BW will always be an awesome game and there's no reason that down the road, it couldn't see a big-time resurgence. Until then, please just play and do what YOU enjoy the most, not what you assume you naturally have to!
If HotS comes out and it's so unlike "Starcraft"( hard counter to everything, no micro or unorthodox plays) then I'll be pissed. BW was extremely balanced at it's end and I'm sad to see it go. ;;
but maybe it was a worthy end for the msl that the best player of all times won the last msl with the best tvz ever witnessed, with a performance which was, maybe, the closest any player has ever come to perfection.
But my one and final spark of hope of this MSL finishing (regardless of the vast unlikelihood of it): TeamLiquid MSL. I really think that's how it should end but I highly doubt that TL has the capability to sponser it. Still, an amazing dream for an amazing end to an amazing league in my opinion.
