1. Open Notepad 2. Type in (remove the quotation marks) "taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe ping 127.0.0.1 -n 2 rem Wait for the game to quit, press Enter to continue pause start explorer.exe exit" 3. save as StarCraft.bat
This this will start up a command prompt window that will kill explorer.exe, and when you want to start explorer.exe up again you just click on the window and hit any key.
The clan for new players is called sGs and the main thread can be found here: sGs New Player Clan Thread
sGs is meant to be a relaxed group that contains either fellow new players to train with, along with some higher level players that are always willing to offer coaching or advice. Don't hesitate to ask for games or coaching from anyone, members are friendly and more than willing to play with fellow clanmates.
sGs usually congregates in a couple places. One is the channel "op teamliquid", the next is the webpage which can be found here: sGs Website. We also have a skype channel in order to talk about games during/after play, as well as a place to get games with offline clanmates.

Food for thought.
With my limited photo skills the only way I know to do this would be to use paint or such and use text boxes. Though I think the current method is clear, I'm more than open to a cleaner, more "polished" look.

The free version is illegal, and so is the entire private server that ICCUP is hosting. However, for whatever reason, Blizzard doesn't do anything about it and hasn't done anything about it for years now. Maybe Blizzard likes ICCUP and encourages its continuing support for Brood War. Perhaps pursuing legal action to end ICCUP would be too difficult and costly for Blizzard's own good. Whatever the reasons, Blizzard leaves ICCUP alone, despite its illegal distribution of Brood War and its private server, so I don't think you should have anything to worry about if you download it. Keep in mind, though, that the free version does not contain the single player campaign, you cannot play multiplayer on the Battle.net server, and there is no music included.

Not really, considering everyone plays on iccup. Blizzard even mentioned one of their tournaments or something once ages ago and seemed to support it. It seems a bit more odd to me you were trying to give the guide a negative stigma :/
its illegal and tl.net does not allow you to post links to illegal downloads. so, yes, i do find it odd that you would start a beginner's guide by linking to a place to steal the game.
btw, the reason iccup.tv is no longer called iccup for sc2 is because blizzard does not in fact agree with what they did with sc1. i could link you to hundreds of posts where people complain that sc2 doesnt have lan support. any idea why there is no lan support?

You don't know anything about the sc1 scene do you. Almost all servers that were ever competitive (going back to 2001) were 2nd hand servers. or illegal as you call them.
The fact that I think nobody condones to download it illegally. The fact is we want people to buy the battlechest (which is less than $20) we want people to support sc1. We know a lot of people don't want to spend the money. So we link to where you can download the game.

i said pirating the game was illegal, not playing on other servers (which i believe is also against the EULA, but am not sure so I won't comment on).
as for pirating, not only are you violating the law, but you violate tl.net's rules by linking to an illegal downloading site.
so, i am not sure why you are getting so agro about it; and, i have been playing sc1 since 1998 and warcraft 2 before that. so, don't get all uppity about your supposed involvement in sc1.

You're coming in here, trying to start an argument, and while you probably have played sc1 since 1998, I doubt your involvement in it has been much bigger (excuse the elitism, but the post count on the brood war forums implies it too). Almost everyone, Korean pros, Foreign pros, TL, etc, everything was on ICCUP. The Brood War scene was based around it. TL condones against pirating, I'm sure they do, and I know you've mentioned that, but not enough to be against ICCUP. every pro who has played on ICCUP has probably used or downloaded it from there before. Blizzard has also supported some small ICCUP league before at the beginning of 2010 if i remember correctly, even if thats just the private server, and I know you're not making claims on that but it is illegal too, it still implies to people to go on their website, and people can still download off it
sorry if its rambly or whatever >.<
Also to add to this. TSL2 and from what I gather TSL1 were both ran on iccup

this will be my last post on the matter. the point of the thread is to bring more people into the sc1 scene (i.e., a beginner's guide); this is also apparent from the new clan the op is making for that purpose. i just found it odd that someone would try to promote sc1 by linking to an illegal version of sc1. because, obviously, if you want to promote the sc1 scene your first order of business is to make sure the developer of the game loses money and has no reason to continue to support the game (e.g., patches).
i am not sure why you guys turned this into a me vs. iccup discussion. i have no qualms with iccup; i only have a problem with the link to a pirated version of the game.
nevertheless, tl.net can decide for itself whether to continue to allow a link to an illegal version of the game. their site, their rules. if they want to allow the link, that's their decision.

The developers have already stopped supporting this game. They've moved on to SC2. The last balance patch SC:BW had was 2001. The last patch SC:BW had was early 2009. Unlike the SC2 scene, SC:BW really doesn't need the support of Blizzard to survive. It just needs Blizzard's indifference. This fact doesn't seem to be well known or intuitive in the SC2 community though.
And I agree, it's the TL mods' decisions to allow it or not. The fact that they haven't asked for a change or shut down the thread should signal something to you.
You know how to become a better poster? Ignore flame posts. If he finds it odd the link there, who really cares? We are forum users and not forum moderators, leave moderation to the moderators. If you think that something is wrong, press the report button.
It sucks that he came here and derailed the thread really fast, it only harms the purpose of the thread to keep arguing.

#1... It's not SC1, the original is simply the name. It is Starcraft. #2 Isn't that how everything goes in life? I'm pretty sure your entire persona is stolen from somewhere. #3 That makes it not odd.

Still no windows 7 fix? uh, I guess I'll post it in case you decide to edit it in later.
Windows 7 needs a fix explorer.exe fucks with the colors on Brood War, and will make everything discolored and harder to see. Here's how to fix it:
There's one floating around on iccup that automatically starts up the iccup launcher, but I use both Minilauncher and Iccup so this is what I use, and supplement it with my Rocketdock, because it doesn't get closed out with explorer.exe

@L_Master In the spoiler for "Where to get BW" can you put something along the lines like "It's suggested that you buy the full game for single player experience and Battle.net" or something along those lines to satisfy those uncomfortable with your link.
Also, will the Beginner Guide to BW have anything to do with strats or is that for another thread?

It should probably just direct people to Liquipedia, no sense in re-writing alot of what's already there.

Well, yeah I know that, but there are some good threads out there like Recommended Thread (which is stickied) so I was wondering if he was going to do a recommended thread of his own or just link to liquipedia and Recommended Threads(which is a little outdated).
My apologies for the lack of updates and responses to the thread. It's been a hectic last week (20 credit hours is pretty brutal) with alot of stuff going on.
Thanks for the color fix, it has been added to the OP! I wasn't even thinking about that since the colors only apply to menu/loading screen/etc and aren't whacked out in game.

Yes, the links will be to relevant liquipedia content, VODs, replays, etc. Not only would it make for monstrously long spoiler texts, there would be no reason to just copy paste from liquipedia/elsewhere.

People were getting hostile because you came in here with what many saw as a hyper aggressive tone. If you had started off with "OP, I'm under the impression the iccup starcraft download was illegal, were you aware of that?" then I don't think anyone would have had a problem.
However, I was under the impression that blizzard was okay with, or at the very least chose to allow, the ICC download. It's important to realize that it isn't the full game, and includes just the bare bones required for online play. Things like the campaign, music, etc is absent.
If TL isn't okay with illegal downloads and the ICC version IS in fact illegal I'm sure the mods will let me know to remove the link.

IF we are bumping this, I think it's worth mentioning that there is a superior solution to the windows 7 color issues than the killing explorer.exe mentioned in the OP: Use w7ddpatcher.
On December 22 2011 12:27 keyStorm wrote: where do i put the maps from the mappack?
In your Starcraft folder you'll find another folder called maps, open that up and there should be another folder named download, stick them in that folder.
theres no download folder, only broodwar, campaing, ladder, oldladder, and the root directory. Also the maps are all .scm and the maps from the pack are .scx..
have you been online yet? I think the download folder gets created when you join a game and you don't have the map so it can be downloaded somewhere. Try creating the folder and stick them in there. Should work.
hmm I don't think you need to worry about the scm and scx, the maps will still work.
when you load up iccup, do you see any of the other maps? Did you try creating the download folder inside maps and then sticking the maps inside the download folder? On mine, it's starcraft>maps>download>iccup map. The maps are inside the iccup map folder and everything works fine. Alternatively you could just join a game with the map you want to play and get it from someone else if all else fails.
I don't really know how else I can help you because it should work pretty easily after you stick them in your map folder
New players should definitely check out Day[9]'s Podcasts (specifically the one about build orders) and the first 100 or so dailies, which are BW focused. If you don't watch any other daily, watch # 30 for 2 reasons:
1) I'm in it, featured as a D- noob 2) he offers a lot of good insight on what to focus on for anyone under C rank
Also check out Stylish's VODs. He was an A rank Sweedish player, and I believe that he was also Morrow's coach before he became a household name.
Using these 3 links, I was able to get to C- in about 3 months with only standard play.

I don't really know how else I can help you because it should work pretty easily after you stick them in your map folder

thanks , ill try and beat the computer before venturing on the ladder
Oh wow only just found this thread. Been watching BW and hanging out in LR threads for over a year, might have to bite the bullet and get iccup after seeing this, cheers for the basics!

Easiest way to beat the computer: pick a standard "safe" build and use vs. comp games to practice maxing out. Don't even bother attacking till you hit 200/200: when you do attack you'll just roll the AI. Warning: you will be attacked relatively early (thus the use of a safe build): I think the standard AI timings are 2 control group medarine/12 zealots/random hydraling attacks. When you get a little better, use normal builds and you should still hold the attacks.
I'm playing Brood War via the ICCUP launcher in windowed mode, 2x the size, and the picture looks quite pixelated. I was wondering if there is a way to apply antialiasing to ICCUP's Brood War window.

Haven't seen this one; fill me in and I'll add it to the OP.
apart from the colour issues on windows 7, has anybody else had the problem where your computer just randomly freezes while in game? The music still plays in the background but no keys work (ie can't access task manager, alt tab etc). The only way to get out is a hard reset. I heard that the taskbar kill also fixes this issue but can someone confirm this? Thanks!
Besides the whole color issue with windows 7 I have an issue that the game just freezes and I can't do anything about it. Can anyone PM me about how to fix this? Also, I need some bw friends to play with! I'm getting back into brood war, I don't know any builds or anything. Help me out? xD Thanks,

Yea this has happened to me and when using this the taskbar fix does seem to take care of it. Oddly, it never happens to me playing on ICC, only when I have played offline or on something like GR/hamachi has this occured.

Every name is apparently taken and my iCCup account information doesn't work either.
You have to register an account first at the ICCup website. You can't try to create an account from with the BW client itself. If you already did that...not sure what to say. Maybe try making a new ICC account from the ICCup webpage.

There are 3rd party programmes for it, but it's usually considered cheating. And yeah, I find o for overlord and m for muta pretty bad

Yes. Iccup version lacks the music and the campaign, and that's all as far as I know. No unit sounds would make it pretty hard to play imho/

I always tried doing 3 hatch muta when I was playing bw, although at a low level:
Don't know if this is the best place to ask, but I did everything you said in the OP, and for some reason I cannot keybind control groups ingame. Anyone knows how to fix this? I'm using a Logitech G15 keyboard (Azerty) if that is relevant.

Thanks in advance.
As it's an azerty keyboard, numbers are up, you have to play with caps lock. Annoying stuff.

To be more precise than the answer above me, I'm sorry but there's no opening that will cut it in all 3 match-ups, this is especially true as zerg. My advice would be to pick one (zvp for instance, protoss are pretty common on iccup, and it's the more macro oriented I guess) and to train only this one at the beginning. In this case read Liquipedia and use 3 hatch spire into 5 hatch hydra I guess, it's a bit outdated but it will give you a good feel for the match-up. Well, good luck adpating to the numerous one base build you'll encounter at D level though.
not entirely sure if this belongs here, but i have a big problem. 3weeks ago i started playing bw again, this time with iccup launcher and stuff and i play windowed mode 2x but in that mode it lags like hell. my pc can play sc2 without any lag so i think i should be able to play broodwar without problems. when i play on full-widescreen there is no problem at all but its not cool to play in widescreen. i have 2.6ghz 4gb ram 1gb graphics.
maybe and hopefully there is an easy solution to it

That's caused 100% by the Wmode program. As far as I know, there is no solution. I simply got used to playing like that.

Basically what I did was turn on fixed aspect ratio. That way I play in full screen (on my widescreen monitor) in a 4:3 aspect ratio..
My question is, do a good amount of people still play BW? I havent played it in years, so if i begin to play am i going to get stomped on right from the beginning?

It's under your video card settings
Under mine Nvidia Control Panel it's under Adjust desktop size and position. It might be different for different video cards... but a quick google search should have it.

Simple answer: yes. There are plenty of people that still play and you will get rofl-stomped for a little while I just started back again about two months ago, went about 80 games before i felt like i was actually winning games (as opposed to my opponent losing them, i.e. one base cheese that fails)
How do you deal with mouse sensitivity in bw? When i enter broodwar and start playing the sensitivity is so high cos the resolution is so low. It makes it REALLY hard to play both BW and other games.
I play with acceleration off and 6/11 in windows and 1200 dpi on mouse. Do you just change the dpi and get a different sensitivity or is there some kinda chart that shows how much 1200 dpi is equally in bw resolution or something?
It's okay if you play in windowmode but everything is so small then...
I'm not sure if this has been asked but... I use a Windows 7 HP laptop and... when I run BW... the loading screen comes up as grainy black/white/grey and then a black screen comes up. I can hear the buttons selecting, like if I press M for multiplayer, it goes there, but the screen stays black.... how do I fix this? I can't play BW...

i think he means cursor sensitivity. to change cursor sensitivity, use a chaos launcher you can alt tab in and out while adjusting to get your perfect cursor speed. google chaos launcher
Actually, the iCCup launcher has the chaos plugin. Just open the settings and change your mouse sensitivity there - it changes your sensitivity just in BW, not in windows. For screen scroll sensitivity (mouse/keyboard), you can change it in the in game menu.
StarCraft tab in iCCup launcher -> Turn on Chaos Plugin and Latency Changer -> Settings... next to Chaos plugin -> Mouse tab -> Use different mousespeed in StarCraft -> find the sensitivity that you're ok with, usually it's better to have lower than too high sensitivity
Ok so I have downloaded this client and played about 10 games. Now I ask myself why even bother? I've played this game many many years ago and was halfway decent at it too. I now play SC2. My problem is the ladder system. In sc2 it matches you up with someone your skill level or close to it. On BW although there might not be so many returning new players most of the players are 10 times better than you, so you will get stomped over and over again. Maybe If I buy the full version atleast i can switch around to the different servers and maybe find some new returning players? I love BW as I did those years ago, but must I really spend X amount of hours practicing/watching replays to even win 1 measly game?

That's a really good question. My suggestion is to play some fun/casual maps instead of laddering. I played BW for about 4 years online before playing a single ladder game and I had loads of fun. And to be honest, I still after all this time don't really have fun laddering. Maybe try some team games.

If you have an ATI graphics card try switching to the power saving card in power express. You could also try windowed mode.

You can always... find... the music and play it in a media player. Or use youtube playlists. Or buy the OST! (not sure if there is one or not).
Also, getting a legitimate version will have music playing normally.
Is there a posibility to play on ICCup while using the .bat file to fix the color issues ? because in the iccup launcher you can only choose the .exe file to launch the game.
I don't think that works for localized versions of Windows and seeing that guy is from Germany, I'm pretty sure he has a German version of Windows so I doubt it'll work. You can still try though.
Wow, thank Tassadar for this post O_o' I can't stand SC2 anymore, and wanted to give BW a new try, but I was having some serious trouble with W7. Thank you VERY MUCH ♥

If you come from sc2 without ever playing BW: You can't see your control groups in BW and you can't change hotkeys.
I just wanted to say that so you don't think you can't make control groups just because they doesn't pop up on the UI like in sc2. ^^

You make control groups the same way that you do in SC2, it just doesn't show up on the UI. You recall them by using the number, just like SC2. Shift+number will add units to an existing control group like SC2, but obviously up to the unit cap that control groups have.
It's kind of depressing for me as a fairly new bw player to log on to iccup D and only see 1-2 one on ones going on. Is that just how it is now? Are there more people C- and higher?

I'm having a problem with Brood War's aspect ratio. I play with an Acer V223W widescreen moniter and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570, and the game is stretched to a widescreen resolution instead of staying 4:3 with bars on the sides. I've read others' suggestions on how to rectify this problem, but nothing has helped me yet. Here's my current NVIDIA control panel setup:
Any suggestions for getting my Brood War game to play with a 4:3 aspect ratio?
I ought to mention that ICCUP's launcher's windowed mode does work for me, so I have a backup if I can't get this working. It's just nicer to be able to play with a full screen instead of in a window, just a personal preference of mine.
EDIT: I thought I'd mention this. I took a screenshot of the ingame menu when it appeared to be stretched. However, this screenshot turned out to be the correct resolution of 640 X 480, not a widescreen resolution like I was expecting. Hopefully this will help point to the problem in my setup. Here's the screenshot in case it helps:
I found my problem. Changing "Perform scaling on" to "GPU" corrected my aspect ratio. However, I should mention that I tried as many combinations of these options as possible yesterday with no luck. The trick that fixed this problem for me was to restart my computer. So if anyone else is having an issue similar to mine, try changing your control panel settings to something similar to this:
Can someone help with the color issues? Notepad doesn't do anything to the Starcraft file for me, is it supposed to be in command prompt? I tried that too and couldn't get it to work...
I've never played BW 1v1, but I'm gearing up to dabble in it a bit. Is ICCUP still the place to be to find 1v1 games? I think I remember reading somewhere that ICCUP was kind of a ghost town (next to impossible for 100% noobs like me to find a game) and that most people were using something else.
These dates are rough goals. I really hope to be faster than this...but it's also possible life will get in the way and it will be slower. The general format of the guide will be to lay out a relatively safe, standard build in each MU; cover common early/mid game builds/playstyles the opponent can do and offer some responses to each, and give a very, very general layout of how to consider playing the lategame.
The purpose of this is to give beginning players a decent build in which to begin learning the game, and enough of an understanding to know why they died/how to defend common opponent attacks and timings.
Hopefully included with each will be some short VOD's/descriptions of how to micro and control in certain important situations.
I'm trying to join games, but it keeps telling me "unable to join." I downloaded ICCUP Maps v2.1, but its still just showing in winzip. Do I need to do something special with them?
I'm sorry for being so needy, but I don't know shit about how this is all supposed to work. I followed the guide in the OP, but clicking "join game" isn't working T.T;;;;;
you updated your version to 1.61? If you're unable to join, make sure your map pack is unzipped and in your starcraft maps folder. You should be able to simply join up on games though and if you didn't have the map you'd be able to dl it. It sounds like there might be another error going on.
ok, I think I got it. I was finally able to join a game but then the guy booted me. Not sure why, It was titled "D" and my rank says "D" so... wth
Edit: ok, so i am actually in a game right this second, but my screen is tiny window... how do i fix this lol ; ; may have to just leave out.
edit 2: well, first game was terribad lol. gg'd out when he sent some vultures (?) and killed my marines. Then I spent 5 minutes trying to figure out how to surrender lol ; ; ;
Might have booted you for a number of reasons...perhaps he was hosting a game for someone else, your lag might have been high, he might have seen your stats as 0-0-0 and thought you were a noob, perhaps your anti-hack was not on etc.
But before you hit the ladder....try to play against a computer and try to beat it, perhaps utilizing a build from liquidpedia. Will lead a better game experience for you and otherrs...and you wont be giving free ladder points :D

If you're on a home network and have access to your router, just google "How to portforward on " + whatever router you're using.
If you're using a work or school network, then you won't be able to get it fixed from what I understand.

This is true; though some universities will do it for you if you explain to them the issue and why you want the port forwarded.

Hey guys, I'm having some trouble with connecting to iCCup. I downloaded the reg file and the anti-hack launcher. I get to the gateway screen, and can choose "The Abyss (iCCup)", but then in the connecting process when it gets to "Accessing Account" it just takes me back to the gateway screen. I've updated to 1.16.1 and I'm not sure exactly what to do.
I had read that was only if you needed to host. I went ahead and forwarded port 6112, but still the same problem happens. It doesn't make it past "Accessing Account" and just goes back to the gateway screen.
Well now I've run into a new problem. After selecting Multiplayer > Expansion, the game crashes and doesn't even make it to the gateway selection screen. =/

Are you talking about after running the program or just that you cannot find the program at all. The launcher should be located in 'C:\Program Files (x86)\ICCup\Launcher' for 64bit versions of windows.
as for after running the program it may have minimized to your task bar and gotten hidden by windows. Look to the left of the clock and there should be a up arrow, click that and see if you can see the icon for it.

By opening it do you mean the zip file, or running the broodwar application itself? For the zip file I'd try and download it again, if that doesn't work try and upgrade winrar and if that still doesn't work try and see if you can repair the file in winrar.
As for running broodwar saying its invalid, make sure you have installed and ran either the anti-hack launcher or the regfile along with any setup files inside the broodwar directory. If these don't work think you can post a screenshot of the error?

Thanks for the guide. Any other tips while I wait for BW to download? I got about half an hour cuz my internet sucks
Edit: I'm ready to go lose 30 games in a row. Iccup, here I come!
Edit 2: I give up for now. I couldn't log into the abyss (entered the credentials from iccup to no avail), and then went on us west to see if I could log in at all. I could, but when I went back, the abyss wasn't listed in the BNET gateways. This is more annoying than linux nowadays!! Hopefully morning will improve things -.-

the problem is that your serverlist gets changed when you log into b.net servers.

FYI, I'm playing on iccup under linux and it works quite well. I have also experienced the gateway disappearing, but switching launchers / re-using the .reg file easily fixed that.
i bought a new monitor few day ago and i cant play bw anymore, because half of the screen is missing, so i cant see my food, which really sucks. its a samsung syncmaster T22A350, does anybody have experience with it, and know how to fix it?
I getting confused about this port forwarding thing. Do I have to do that even though I don't have a router? I just connect my ethernet cable to the wall and that's that. But every port forward guide says I need to know the name of my router so...

Do you use two screens at the same time? If you're on windows you could try the window mode of iccup or chaos launcher...

Well the apartment building is made for us students at the university, but I don't know if it differently set up compared to a regular apartment building. I haven't tried to host yet no, in fear of getting massive lag and making my opponent mad Oo.
But is it possible that it could work even though I haven't made any preparations?
I think it's unlikely that it's gonna work, but you would know before the game starts - if nobody ever joins your games you probably cannot host. You can still leave after somebody joined if you are so afraid of lag.
Probably as a result of the recent VNSL Cast by Tasteless & Artosis i have seen some new faces around in the BW section. In order to not answer the same questions all the time, this Thread needs go active, so we have a central point.
Probable updates to the OP: Some tips for beginners would be good, like importance of macro, pick 1 build at starters for each MU, etc etc
Is the sgs.Clan still active in helping new users with the game? The concept was awesome
to beginners don't be shy to ask questions here! It also let's us get an idea of how many of you are out there atm :>

Great initiative! I would also like to direct all newcomers to our own version of "Simple Questions, Simple Answers" which I shamelessly stole from the StarCraft II section many years ago. Feel free to ask your questions here as well:
