Hi @all I'm Zerg player with average APM and skills. I just wanted to know, which Hotkeys do I need to use if I play Zerg, also how high does my APM have to be, to play good iwth Zerg. At the moment I use the Hotkeys 1-3 for units 4-9 for hatches. Also I could need some tips for gettin better with Zerg.
Thanks and regards

~2300 Diamond Zerg here. I personally use: 1 - First scouting drone -> Army 2 - First scouting overlord ->Mutalisks 3 - Defense drone (from pylon blocks and such) -> Overseer 4 - Nothing.. 5-9 - Separate base hatches, 5 being main. 0 - All hatches, for pumping out units faster.
You'll notice I don't have a hotkey for queens. I realize this is bad, but since I check my base every 1 or 2 seconds, I can inject anytime I don't see green bubbles on my hatcheries. Hope this helps.
EDIT: LOL

Well, the hotkeysetup you have seems pretty good.
What you can work on is redoing your setup mid-game. For example, if the game gets to lategame 1-3 will not be enough to control your army, 1-5 may not even be adequate. For example, if I'm setting up for a big push with a 200/200 army I will bind pretty much 1-9 and then use savescreenposition to macro.
As for APM, the more the merrier. Around 100 apm should allow you to macro in every situation except from really tense micro battles.

Can i ask you why you use queens? Broodlings is a pretty expensive upgrade...
Also what is this "diamond" ranking?

EDIT also, how did you get green bubbles on your hatchery ? Is it a new glitch ? oh darkplasmaball posted below, it probably is just ensnare on hatchery, nothing special, but why would you want to slow down something which doesn't move?
EDIT 2: also, you made a typo, overseer should be overlord, but that's minor... i guess you must really love drop strategy :O

Early game :
1 scout drone/army 2 first overlord/army 345 Hatch
Mid/late game :
1234 Army 567 Hatch (only 1 hatch per expo)

1 is Army? This means your ground army is never larger than 12 units? Do you always attack before the ten-minute mark as a general rule? If this is the case, then I'm confused as to why you need five hotkeys for different bases.
Also, do you prefer attacking with 12 zerglings or a mix of 6 zerglings and 6 hydras?

Around 100 apm should allow you to macro in every situation except from really tense micro battles. I doubt it. Even proper scout's control requires more APM. I believe it should be at least 160-200.

Yeah, one for ground army and one for air. Interesting.
And he uses queens to put green bubbles on his hatcheries? Does ensnare work that way?

Personal Hotkeys =3 Early Game: + Show Spoiler +1 Lings 2 Nothing yet (Maybe scouting drone) 3 Scouting Overlord 4 Main 5 Nat Exp Mid Game: + Show Spoiler +1-2 Army... 3 Mutalisk? 4 Main 5 Nat Expo 6 Third Hatch #6: 3rd hatch could be my 2nd Expo or an aditional htach in my main I prefer the one in my base cause this are the hatch u use to group ur army not your drones Late Game + Show Spoiler +1-4 A lot bunch of units !! 5 Main is here now or a hatch is in your main at least 6-8 Hatchzz... I cant really use more hotkeys than that.... I add one more hotkey for army because you can really move a big armies with just 3hotkeys Most of ur untis are lings so....
QUEENS are a terrible idea dont listen to that GenesisX. Clearly he is n00b !! xD If you have extra minerals make more hactheries

What I meant was that you could macro pretty well in all situations where you are not performing micro with some unit. I did come across a little "100 apm is all you need" though and and that is ofc not the truth.
Also, posting in epic thread.

All right, OP. I feel that you're being a bit ambiguous with "how to be good with Zerg". You said you're average and you want to be good. Those aren't clearly defined, and so I'm having trouble helping you. 150-200 APM is a nice number to have, as is really good mechanics. Can you be more specific? Can you post a replay or two so we can see exactly where you're at? What's your ranking? Et cetera.
And contrary to GenesisX's advice, I strongly recommend getting more than 12 ground units for attacking. I always felt that Zerg was all about swarming with masses of units, so you'll need more than one hotkey for your ground guys.
And don't get queens.

A-class is obviously Aurum, since S-class is Silver.

In general i hotkey the scouts low early on and the hatches on the higher numbers, it really depends on the point in the game and my army/hatch count

You have no units that require separate micro? I would use different hotkeys for backstab lings, lurkers, defilers and scourge at the very least.
Also I tried selecting my overlord and frantically clicking V but nothing happens. What do I do?

I'm a Copper player. I always thought I was bad, but now I know that I'm actually C, so I'm pretty good! Thanks everybody! Iccup sure made a weird ranking system, putting copper over diamond. But since diamonds are mined in Russia, maybe they're really really cheap there?
|
1-4 Army 5 Scout -> Army 6 Scout (ovie) -> Nydus worm 7 Main Hatch 8-9 Other Hatches 0 All Hatches
EDIT: 7 Main Hatch is an old habit that I never got rid of... I used to use 7 as my main CC in BW, then kept that when I switched to Zerg (in BW).
|
And I thought that being gold (A ranking) was pretty bad... I guess I'm a TON better than my D+ rank on iccup.
Btw this thread is now my favorite ever...

sooooooooooo .. was the OP's question answered?
seriously guys ..
@op your asking here means you're not really that good .. maybe you are just starting to play the game after you've read tons of guides and watched tons of replays. and you're fairly decent with BOs now, my guess. so just spam games on iccup .. and watch your loses rise
|
Pretty epic thread thanks to the 2nd post lol
General consensus seems to be:
1-2 scouting units / army -> 1-5 with more army 3-5 hatch, shift to 5-0 with bigger army save camera keys to expansions
I was 1400 D at one point on iccup >< guess I should play some sc2 1v1

You didn't really tell him much either~
But if he does take the advice from this thread, I guess he does need to spam games to get practice reassigning his hotkeys at critical points of the game.

Definiately, this thread won the "Thread of the Week" Award! So much epicness can only be found here :D
Topic: I also use 1-4 units (Mutas, Defiler, Lurker, Ultras) and 5-0 hatches. Rally Points on F2-F4 (or sth else what is important)
|
Early game:
1=Hatchery 3=Scouting Drone 4=Overlord 2=Drone (for 12hatch)
Mid game: 1-4=Lurkers/Mutalisk (don't bother hotkeying lings unless it's super early), 5-X (hatcheries)
Late game: 1-7/8 Hatcheries, 9-0 Ultralisk/Defilers
I average 200APM, which is by no means high. However, I feel that my setup is correct for me personally.
Make very high use of the Shift+F2/F3/F4 keys; they typically lead to your macro zerg harass being IMBA. I use F2 in the middle of the map where I gather all my units, F3 and the enemy's choke, and F4 at my tech items (main base / evolution chambers).
By the way, I just turned 21 and I am hammered while writing this... so... Happy birthday to me! :-D

Thanks to all who replied to me, also thanks for the laughtes :D
I'll start now to play more ICCup, in general B.net Europe my stats are like 200-60 My APM is at the Moment about 150-190 depends on the lenght of game. I do know many Tactics also watched tonns of Progame Videos. Also I'll now try to use F2 F3 F4 too, cause never did that : O

270-310 APM user When I start the game I use 4 for the first hatchery 2 for the first ovie 3 for the 2nd one
as soon as i have vision (whether i have it with the 1st ovie or later) on my natural expo i mark it as F3
5 for 2nd hatch 6 for 3rd hatch (if ZvP i immediately mark my 3rd expo with F2)
Early in the game I use 4,5,6 to produce faster drones/army. The army i have is usually groupped in 1,2,3 (when having mutas they are on hotkey 1, when having lurkers they are on hotkey 2) Mid to late game i start using F4,F3,F2 more because: in zvz i tend to hotkey 12 scourges at say 3, 10 at 4, 8 at 5 and so on in zvp i have shitloads of army so i cant really afford not using 4,5,6 when doing surrounding attacks in zvt at some point i start using hotkey 4,5 for various units (lings, defilers, scourges) all the time and then get lazy to rehotkey my hatcheries.
Generally i dont use 7-0 for else than army. I dont think i can stretch my fingers of the left hand fast and precise enough to pump army that way. And I also feel my army and game insecure when raising my right hand from the mouse to reach the keyboard for 7-0 :D So i just stay with the F usage :D
edit: sometimes i use hotkey 1 for one larva or drone at a time to optimise mineral mining efficiency ;D

1-0 hatcheries, click and a-move once maxed with 5/3 ultras,,, surprised i am the only person using this style.

I am top diamond player with apm 14,83 and i recommend using 1 for all your units and 2 for all hatcheries. When you go badass strategy of spread mutalisk you hotkey them as 1, beacause they are really good.
+ Show Spoiler +Ahh i felt like i have to write something in this thread eventhough i almost don't play zerg. I can only recommend when massing units from more hatcheries at one place, ctrl select all larvae and click letter of the unit = 2 clicks. 4 sh 5 sh 6sh = 9 clicks

I have average - 150-180 APM ; stuck on D but is this weird? I find it comfortable anyways
early game:
1 - hatchery 5 and 0 - scout overlord ==> (for big maps - I change 5 to scouting drone) 5 again for first set of lings
mid-late game:
MACRO: 1234 - main hatcheries for each expansion ( hatcheries built close to each other does not count since I can use my mouse to macro ) screensave F2-F3-F4 for other expos
MICRO: 5-0 units
==> 5-6-7-8 - for Frontline units eg. lings/ultras/hydras/(when muta harrassing I do 7) sometimes changes 8 - 9 for lurkers 9/0 - Defilers/Drop Ovies
5a6a7a8a9a0a or such 8u9w9g9c0u is ok to me now, got used to it anyway
EDIT: I learned how to use my thumb

rofl. this thread makes my chin wet with joy.

1-4 units 5-9, F2/F3/F4 Hatcheries. 0 I use for stuff like scourge or maybe defilers. Often swap hatcheries for units in lategame, but not sure how good it is.

You'll notice I don't have a hotkey for queens. I realize this is bad, but since I check my base every 1 or 2 seconds, I can inject anytime I don't see green bubbles on my hatcheries. Hope this helps.
LAWL! Personally I find it disadvantageous to ensnare my drone line, but it's also fun to attack a huge army with my dozen queens. They quickly become 24 broodlings. At that point any self-respecting player realizes that shit just got real! I can only imagine the look on my opponents face when they have to guard their ramp from a swarm of Broodlings...
1). First Overlord/Scouting Drone/Mutalisk/Lurkers/Army 2). First Overlord after scouting drone takes over (1)/army 3). Army 4). Defilers/army 5).->0). Hatcheries
F2). Main Base F3). Natural/Fourth Base/All even bases thereafter F4). Third Base/Fifth Base/All odd bases thereafter

this thread is pure ... diamond? hmm, I think it's D-level enough :D

EDIT: 7 Main Hatch is an old habit that I never got rid of... I used to use 7 as my main CC in BW, then kept that when I switched to Zerg (in BW).
lol oops!

Exact same as me, except for the "0" key, 2400 z here
Wait.. the is a BW thread.. 1-5 Army, 4,5 usually being defilers and scourge 6-0 hatches 0 centering on my macro hatches C level Z here

Shouldn't it be:
5sz6sz7sz8sz9sz0sz1a2a3a4a?

1 - Units 2-0 - Hatcheries
Sometimes I use 2 for units.
|
1-5 army 6-0 hatches.... when i came up with it i was doing all zvp hydra builds ahah so it was just like 0sh9sh8sh7sh6sh 1a2a3a4a5a (macro with 2hands)
|
I like 2 for lurks, assuming you make them. 3 to 5 for army, and 6+ for hatches. 3a4a5a is just a lot easier to push then 1a2a3a and lurks should not take up an a move hotkey becuase they never attack move and only burrow. 1 can be defilers or something
