Latest Update: From Overseas with Love !

Updated Notes:

It's that time again - please go go go Team Liquid! I need those comments We reached 130-something last time so lets try for 100 this time!!

Here is the link;

http://www.fomos.kr/board/board.php?mode=read&keyno=101381&db=issue

Notes:

I didn't want to jinx this by reporting it too early, but I've been given a three month internship with Fomos (the most influential Korean eSports website around and home to my photography idol Mr. Kang.)

I am very happy to be working with the wonderful group over at Fomos and I hope to be able to bring plenty more articles. This does not mean I will stop doing projects for Teamliquid.net and it probably means I'll be even more active in the near future.

So please support me by checking out my articles and photos ~

Articles:

#1 OSL finals round up: http://www.fomos.kr/board/board.php?mode=read&keyno=98919&db=issue&cate=&page=1&field=&kwrd=

#2 CJ Entus ~ SaviOr, Skyhigh and EffOrt interviews: http://www.fomos.kr/board/board.php?mode=read&keyno=98957&db=issue&cate=&page=1&field=&kwrd=

#3 Ultimate Proleague Championship Review: http://www.fomos.kr/board/board.php?mode=read&keyno=99123&db=issue

#5 What do foreigners want from their teams/players?: http://www.fomos.kr/board/board.php?mode=read&keyno=100345&db=issue

#6 Lemme dig it out of their archives.

[EDIT!]

How to Comment on Fomos:

Things are rough right now - with all the Koreans demanding translations I cannot give them and generally being pretty negative so it would really help me be able to continue to provide content if people could comment on my articles there.

Here is a little guide on how to post replies to fomos articles:

~ You don't need to sign up.
~ The left box is for a usename and the right box is for a password.
~ Just write your comment and click the big button on the right.

That's cool. Internships are a great way to get involved and meet new people and you will definitely learn a whole lot about photography. Also I was surprised to see English on fomos. I thought they were a Korean only website.

Awww thank you That's pretty much what I did when I saw it this morning. It's very surreal thinking about how last year I was talking about working for fomos in an ironic way (because I never thought it'd happen.) and now it's a reality.

I don't know if you missed affla's post, but is your name Karry or Kerry? Fomos says Kerry, but this thread title says Karry. I'll just assume you can spell your own name correctly I guess

Hey, she told me and pholon, I don't think she loves you anymore.

Congratulations Neggie, I'm really glad this went through, and I giggled at alfffla in the comments, and fomos is quite odd, I'm pretty sure there are pictures of skin diseases at the bottom of the page.

Any who, like an actor's first night on stage, we eagerly await the translation of some netizen comments.

I might like that. Oh and any ideas why the netizens are now discussing Bisu?

저 여자 김택용 합성사진인줄 알았다

Uh.....

they are saying you look like a photoshopped Bisu lol

LMAO - I could read 'girl' and Bisu and I was wondering if that was it. Hahahaha is it wrong that I'm kind of flattered?

can be inferred to be as 'nevergg is as pretty as bisu' or 'bisu is as pretty as nevergg'

your call :p

I've always thought your photos are incredible; it's obvious you have real talent.

However (gulp), I found that article really hard to read. The content is great but there's just not enough punctuation and it doesn't flow at all.

Sorry you didn't like it, but it is my *first* after all. Also the punctuation might be off because it was sent to a Korean writer who then posted it to the site. The format in email was a bit iffy. Please be patient with me in this respect -_-;; Also if it didn't flow *at all* they wouldn't have allowed it onto the site so I think maybe you're exaggerating a bit there.

I am not a professional writer - I am doing my best though.

Bisu is really hard to explain in korean. I'ts kinda a reven kill, a revenge knife. I dont know how explain. Kal means "knife" but bisu is kinda knife for revenge... something like that.

I think it was nicely written and easy to read. That is, easy to read for us.

I doubt all of the Korean readers can read and understand this article effortlessly. It has to do with the punctuation (as mentioned above), as well as the choice of words that are sometimes uncommon.

Yeah - I'm pretty sure I know who it is who is making a big fuss in the thread and if they want me to keep covering things like this then it'd probably be better to quit nitpicking and just PM me instead. The punctuation was off because this went through a Korean worker (who doesn't speak much English at all.) and in formating it some of the punctuation appears to have vanished. It was all there in the mail I sent.

Anyway, as I said this is my *first* article outside of Teamliquid and I am a freelancer *not* a
pro-writer. Just go back and look at my first photos from April 2008 - things like this take practice.

Today I'm going off on my first interview assignment and as always with work that will be seen by TL/fomos I will do my best. Please remember I'm still doing this out of my own pocket, using my own money to pay for things like my camera/supplies and on top of a full-time teaching job. I'm also doing it for my passion regarding eSports so if you want to support me please do, but *please* don't make negative comments in the fomos post. I'd like to hope no one here wants to see me lose out on a chance to provide even better coverage for everyone.

I'm still laughing over the Bisu thing too. Oh netizens <3

*Nods* I think some of the netizens totally missed the point about it not being just for Korean users of the site. The little netizen argument was pretty funny and all the Bisu comments made me laugh so hard. This was definitely my favorite though;

'Netizen:
I didnt read it lol. But even so, things like this are important as it shows us foreigners' interest.'

Someone got the point of the article I just hope the guys at fomos don't take the comments too much to heart because if it's too negative then i'm liable to get booted out -______-;; (which seems kind of likely if all the comments are ragging on fomos for not translating it into Korean.)

I will simplify down my english for the next article so it's easier for those Koreans with a level of English to read. It's an interview so it shouldn't be too difficult to make it more accessible to them as well. I was writing it way more with the foreign community in mind and I'd rather not get fomos slammed for this.

*STRESSSSSSSSSES*

The posters on Fomos are generally always posting terrible shit. They just sit around and wait for something to mock, basically. But sometimes you really see their sweetness and tenderness when they choose to express themselves in awful ways. For example, when they tore Garimto to fucking pieces when he said he was thinking about coming back for SC2, that was their way of saying "Either seriously make a come back or don't, we can't take another disappointment from you. Because we love you."

Yeah, I'm going to try and not see the translated comments (as much as I want to thank Elric for doing them this time.) I understand that the Korean netizens just totally missed the point in places and don't understand that foreigners are aware of Fomos almost as much as they are in many cases.

That's my only problem aside from stressing to insane levels about not providing good photos and planning everything in advance. I still take criticism straight to heart. I am convincing myself that even if this were to fall through tonight it's still been a good learning experience and I can always continue on reporting eSports in the same way I was before.

Seeing their comments kind of reminds me why Teamliquid is a pretty awesome place - by and large the posters here don't rip into people, even for reasons that might have the best of intentions.

Yeah, it's a bit less funny to me because it could wreck my internship if people make comments like that often.

As expected from the comments, it was way too difficult to read.

Make sure you use only simple words, short sentences, and no special constructions.

It is kind of difficult for me because I'm used to writing only for the English speaking fans, but I will tone it down as much as possible without making it sound childish or stupid. Also it really wasn't meant for the Korean fomos viewers who only speak the most basic of middle school English - as I mentioned before.

I have taught many ESL university students, so let me give you some examples on why it was difficult to read for someone who only studied English in a classroom setting as a second language. I really want you to do well, which is why I am writing this.

For one side of the equation this situation was a familiar one. Yet the other participant in this year's Bacchus OSL finals held at Olympic Park Fencing Stadium on the 22nd of August was following in the foot steps of his twin brother with hopes of claiming his first individual title.

You referred to Jaedong as one side of the equation. For someone who does not speak English, this will certainly cause problems - as metaphors are usually very difficult to understand due to cultural differences - even though it is nicely composed.

Sadly for fans of macro-intensive, protracted games a substantial and indepth finals was not to be found this year. For those who wished to see Jaedong scooping the Golden Mouse as they had previously watched old-school zerg and fan favorite Park Seongjoon (JulyZerg.) receive his in an equally decisive demolition of SKT1 protoss Do Jaewook at the EVER 2008 OSL finals reality was swift and merciless.

Instead of "protracted", maybe you can write "long" or "drawn-out"; instead of "scooping", you can write "winning"; instead of "decisive demolition", you can write "decisive victory".

Game two was met with rampant jubilation from the Jaedong supporters, but an air of predictability by those who had estimated that Jaedong's ZvZ was unparalleled (especially by a first-timer to the OSL finals.) Another sharp shock to the ego via Jaedong's exquisite timing and use of a limited number of units - he did not have to graduate from his employment of mutalisks and zerglings to demonstrate his superiority.

I have serious doubts that an average undergraduate Korean student would know what it means by "rampant jubilation". Something like "excitement" would work fine. It's probably not a good idea to NOT force someone to use a dictionary while browsing the internet. =)

Thanks (I have no experience with Korean Uni level English studies at all.) The thing is - it wasn't written for them really. It's for foreign browsers on fomos. Anyway - I can simplify an article next time. I am an English teacher too (but with kindergarten.) I understand it was written without them in mind and I will be more considerate towards them in the future. My writing is really flowery, but I think making the style more simple is okay as long as it doesn't seem too badly written to the non-Korean readers.

I feel kind of unmotivated for tonight's work now, but I will just have to ignore the comments for now and try this new style for my interviews.

Sorry if I discouraged you =(

Ultimately your goal is to survive the intern. So think about why the people from fomo hired you: to attract more readers, which translates into more revenues on advertisements that are geared mostly towards Koreans on domestic Korean products.

I understand your preferences on journalism, and I have to say it is the style I enjoy. However, writing something voluntarily for a fan-website (such as TL) is dramatically different from someone paying you to do it.

So start low; I have faith that eventually you will have a fanbase of sufficient size that will allow you to exhibit your talents freely.

Haha, just write as you do, maybe it'll help the Korean viewers actually learn some real English instead of "I AM A GIRL, HOW DO YOU DO"

GRATS!! stop being so down on yourself, you silly girl.

Except you do not learn English through a well-written article. It's not instructive.

Great article NeverGG

Don't be discouraged by the netizens - most the comments were fine. If this is meant to be more aimed towards us (us being the foreign scene) then I think you're serving the purpose just fine ^^. You could try making it a little more simple for the Koreans to understand in your next article but other than that you're doing well!

It's good to see hard work pay off, I hope this goes well for you.

It's a combination of (Inter)net + (citi)zens.

Thanks guys - yesterday's assignment to the CJ house seemed to go pretty well and I will have the interviews posted over at fomos soon

Blimey - well whoever said it was very wrong. I don't even sit in the audience any more. (Not since last April except for maybe 2-3 times when I took friends and didn't work.)

Great interview. Cool to hear about Iris being such a good hyung to Skyhigh and the CJ team being a fun team to be on.

Blimey - well whoever said it was very wrong. I don't even sit in the audience any more. (Not since last April except for maybe 2-3 times when I took friends and didn't work.)

What if I just wanted to be able to say hey look it's NeverGG omg!

Now, you can!

Sorry

I'm not dumb - of course they do. I'm not sure why the email ----> publishing edits them out. I'm going to talk to my superior at fomos on Sunday and tell him the punctuation appears to be disappearing when he loads them.

It's really more of a sting against Bisu I think, he has always looked pretty effeminate to me.

This is really awesome. Great articles and beautiful photos. I wish I knew how to make an account to post some praise on there -- I'll work on that though (does it require a Korean social-security id thing?). edit: Never mind, just saw that you don't need to sign up

By the way, don't let the comments get to you too much. As far as I can tell through all the translating I've seen Korean netizens are just as troll-y as any others, and for every lame comment I'm sure there's a tonne of people who love it.

Tell us about your visit to Blizzcon. In what ways do you think the foreign and Korean communities are different from each other?
▲ At first I was very surprised the foreign fans even recognized me and that there were so many people at Anaheim who support CJ Entus and StarCraft progaming in Korea. I think the main difference between the foreign and Korean communities is that here in Korea our fans are mostly female and at Blizzcon the fans I met were mainly men. Korean fans feel that looks and style are as important as game play. However, the foreign fans were more focused upon how progamers use their game play to communicate their passion for StarCraft.

I was proud of us when I read that. Foreign fans fighting!

Yeah, I've not found it as 'filling' as Rival Battle Break was last year. The off-season all feels a bit too serious for my liking.

P.S. Taken from comments on the latest article:

agreed.. 09-14 14:12 (67.175.159.60)
no one here is going to understand what the article is saying... except for a few. I seriously ask Fomos to hire some translators (not crappy ones) so that we all can share her view and see if there's anything that we can give her a help in order to propagate e-sports culture in Korea.

agreed.. 09-14 14:14 (67.175.159.60)
XD furthermore, even I did not read the article thou... kinda long for me to fool around here.

I wish people wouldn't post things like this - it's basically not helpful at all and will lead to me probably being replaced by someone who is bilingual, but does not have the experience of working in eSports journalism that I do. I *really* hope it wasn't anyone from TL -_- It's hard enough dealing with the negativity from the Korean visitors let alone people making suggestions like this.

by the way if anybody wants to post on fomos

the first box on the top left is your username, the box on the top right is the password if you want to delete it, and the last one is kinda self explanatory.

I might write that into the OP because comments on fomos would be really awesome and mean I can keep providing content there.

Don't sweat the negative comments. Trust me, for every negative post there are 10 people who read it, liked it and didn't post anything. People have always been more likely to post their negative thoughts than their positive.
In any case, keep up the good work and don't give up!

Thanks - the comment levels are *way* down from the first two entries, but I don't know about the hits. I'm pretty annoyed because I emailed the article to my boss over three days ago, but he never got it and within about a couple of hours of being posted the article was bumped right down by a slew of other PL season articles - hence no one is problem even noticing it -____________-

Thanks to whoever left those last couple of comments, but I need to get more >.<

I do, but I worked for SCforall.com for about six months writing smaller articles and reports. I've also done several articles for TL including a final edit.

Keep the good work NeverGG and thx for everything!

You are way too sensitive to criticism for your own good.

Anyways, do you have experience working in ESPORTS journalism? I thought you took photos mostly

I do, but I worked for SCforall.com for about six months writing smaller articles and reports. I've also done several articles for TL including a final edit.

Ah yes, I remember your FE piece. I didn't know about SCforall.com, thats cool. I hope you achieve great success (not to sound like Borat) with your internship at Fomos.

Thanks to those people who left comments last night. I really appreciate your help. The next article will probably be either a photo sketch of behind the scenes of eSTRO or a full article on eSTRO as a team.

It's going to be an article that is mainly photos with minimal text - only small captions for each photo which will probably be written in Korean/English to sate the Korean netizens for a while.

Been reduced to a lower line and no main photo which is a bit disappointing. Please comment over at fomos if you have a chance since I doubt many Koreans will even notice it now.

wow:

Plus I am already looking at other foreign players, so eSTRO will once again have another foreign player just like when we invited Nony and Idra to stay with us. If Nony wants to come back for SC2, our arms are always open wide. My players and coaching staff loved him as did I. We enjoy the company of our foreign gaming companions.

yeah I know right, I'm pretty pumped, as I said in my comment on Fomos, the possibility of Ret being able to go to Korea looks more likely now that eStro have said that they welcome with open arms.

I'm trying not to get too excited though, life gets in the way (Nony and his girlfriend anyone) and even if its possible, any number of things could shoot it down at any time.

So we just have to wait.

You shouldn't worry.

Think about the number of people who come here looking for bumbs/hits for the stupidest things. You, on the hand, have a column at the freaking FOMOS! I went to Fomos for the first time a couple seconds ago and there was your article, easy to find.

How many people can say they've achieved something comparable to that?

Ah I was trying to leave the password box blank because I wasn't registered so I didn't think I had a password. Fomos didn't like that.

I posted a comment.

The thing is, though, you can't expect the Korean fans to be friendly given this strange arrangement of having your English articles right by the regular Korean ones. Without translation, it would be like a Korean language article on TeamLiquid, since there's no translation most of us can't appreciate or discuss the contents of that article.

Yeah, it's a really unfortunate situation, but at the moment Fomos has no one capable of translating my articles and I can't do it myself. I'm assuming they are looking into it, but communication is a tad tricky. We'll see - if nothing else it's good to write more articles and help get my style going.

Keep up the good work, NeverGG, don't get disappointed. English E-sport articles in ROK may not be the most popular, they need the connection to the rest of the world to make Starcraft bigger internationally. Perhaps Fomos is trying to draw some of the TL.net audience (which at this rate isn't happening any time soon :p), the intention however is good. Hiring you (as a temp, ok, -any insight in the perpetuation of your contract yet?) is a step in the right direction and shows they are, even if it's just a little bit yet, committed. Don't let them bring you down, keep on rolling!

Nice and well written article! Have you asked the translators here at TL if anyone could translate it to Korean for you?

I would like if you did anything Flash-related in the future.

Seriously, Korean netizens are such a troll, it's an embarassment. I don't think I ever saw them act decently - or even type correct Korean - on any of the public websites. (I can literally count the number of famous website that enforce against trolling/poor typing, and they are all homepages run by single individual.) One of the reason I like reading English posts so much rather than Koreans.

Congratulations for the internship, and don't pay attention to much of the comments over there. We all know your writings were intended for us foreigners (+random english-fluent Korean) here anyway.

Thanks again for all the comments - we got to 124 in under two days. I hope that my next article is this well recieved and that the Girlsu trend continues because it makes me laugh. I'm pondering ideas right now and I will probably publish this weekend if possible.

In my first article's comments some Korean netizen suggested the photo looked like a photoshopped Bisu and now a lot of them are saying it.

Why let a person like that get to you? It's like someone that writes "your an idiot." They think of the comeback for you, and prove it themselves.

They have no ability to handle themself with even a trace amount of maturity, not to mention write in a coherent manner.

You should pity these people and when seeing them feel sorry not for them, but their parents that they raised a child that could never grow up.

The next time someone writes something douchy that has no worth to anyone anywhere, just visualize this picture of January and think about all the things those people just proved to you about themselves.

And why are you here worrying about this stuff right now? Go get some tofu turkey and rice or something with people you care about.

Why so insecure? Asking (begging?) TL readers to comment solely to increase comment numbers seems a bit pitiful. I don't mean to be harsh, but if your korean audience doesn't appreciate you perhaps writing for Fomos just isn't going to work out. What's the plan, anyway? Are you hoping that TL support will somehow engender more support from Koreans? Short of koreans learning english, how is that any kind of sustainable position? Getting someone to take the effort to translate your article to korean every time sort of defeats the purpose of having an english article, doesn't it? or am I completely missing the point?

edit: removing added part since you already responded, will post again.

They're looking for a translator for the future as far as I'm aware. I know it sounds pathetic and tbh I feel ashamed having to do it, but I don't want them to see me as a failure because the Korean netizens just spend most of their time either ignoring my work or just leaving insults/complaints. I am doing this because I don't want to lose the chance to provide extra levels of coverage such as the interviews I did with Savior, Skyhigh and Effort a little while back through Fomos' arrangement.

I'm generally known for being insecure about my work in general, but I'm trying to give this a go so I'm doing anything and everything I can to try and get TL to show Fomos there is a market for English language articles and coverage directed to foreigners than TL can't always provide because they only really have a handful of us living in Seoul right now who are in a position to report (aka. myself, Artosis and Susie.) I'm hoping this will encourage the teams as well to expand their own coverage by making English sites, but when they see there are no responses from the foreign fans it won't help at all. Hence me begging -_-

I don't know what to say to that other than it's a korean based website that I wouldn't visit on a regular basis even if it had english articles. I already have more than enough content from TL, what need is this fulfilling?

My first post probably came across more dickish than I meant it, but I'm just trying to imagine TL hiring someone to post articles in Korean on TL and the reaction it would get from the posters here. Most would probably ignore it since they didn't understand it, a few would be annoyed at a korean article on an english website and post about it, and the few that could read it wouldn't necessarily comment either. The only way it would get read at all by any significant number of people is if it were translated to english every time -- which, as we've seen here on TL, is unsustainable for even the most widely appealing and simple progamer interviews, let alone lengthy articles written by this imaginary korean writer I know or care little about. Surely you can see the parallels.

I do appreciate the extras that your being a part of Fomos has given TL access to, but I really don't get this whole arrangement you have with them. Good luck.

I think you're missing the point and sometimes completely wrong. Korean interviews regularly get translated by a number of people here on tl whose efforts should be praised. NeverGG's articles speak for the foreigner community outside of Korea, something that they just don't get to see very often, and for once we have a voice inside the most influential esports website, I see little reason not to support it. I think you're wrong when you say there wouldn't be interest in a korean writer coming to TL, because I'm sure there would be people to read it on a regular basis and I don't see the parellels.

It's really unfortunate that she doesn't have more support in Korea, but she should be able to count on support from us.

I understand what you're saying and thank you for being polite about it, but hearing people say the work is redundant does put me off and does make me lose all my motivation. (I'm working on that tough shell image, but it's just not me.) I also understand the Korean's frustration, but it was Fomos who hired me and Fomos who chose to let me continue posting my work there. I feel kind of lost when it comes to my purpose at the site too, but the communication barrier means it's hard to discuss how the internship isn't doing that well.

-_- TBH I feel as though I might retire from it soon because I know no one is interested in the articles and I'm probably better off just working on TL things, but I am clinging to this chance because when it began I was so elated to have been given the opportunity. I now feel more like a burden to them because of my lack of Korean abilities. I didn't mean to post this much, but hearing someone flat out state that the work isn't worthwhile makes me feel this even more.

Do you feel the same way about my work at TL? I sometimes also am not sure what purpose the fan cafes hold or what point there is in making cards/presents etc. Closing down projects and cutting back would certainly save me time and money. And also the shame of feeling as though I'm contributing things people don't care about/like. I don't feel this is true of my photos or articles, but some of the other projects seem frivolous even if they're enjoyable to me at times.

I'm not planning to retire entirely, not this year anyway. However, I do need to decide where this internship is going (if anywhere.) and find out if they actually still want me around. I'm hoping to still have a decent relationship with everyone even if I don't work directly for Fomos all the time.

I do appreciate the extras that your being a part of Fomos has given TL access to, but I really don't get this whole arrangement you have with them. Good luck.

I understand what you're saying and thank you for being polite about it, but hearing people say the work is redundant does put me off and does make me lose all my motivation. I also understand the Korean's frustration, but it was Fomos who hired me and Fomos who chose to let me continue posting my work there.

Don't retire from it... there's always going to be people who don't appreciate what you do here, but really its something that the site would really miss. People like you are the reason this site is so awesome.

I'm not planning to retire entirely, not this year anyway. However, I do need to decide where this internship is going (if anywhere.) and find out if they actually still want me around. I'm hoping to still have a decent relationship with everyone even if I don't work directly for Fomos all the time.

Has Fomos ever had a English journalist writing for their site before?

Well in one sense the entire ESPORTS scene is a bit frivolous, but in another it's really fucking awesome. I didn't mean to burst your bubble about the whole thing, lol, I just didn't understand why you were trying so hard to overcome the language barrier like that. I can't even imagine what it'd be like to be living in a foreign country in the first place, though, so that's probably just me.

Stuff like the backho get well soon card and the jaedong fighting card, I'm not sure how much that did for TL (letting people express their fandom is always cool tho), but I'm sure it made BackHo and Jaedong feel really fucking awesome. I bet they had no idea how much foreigners really appreciate their play -- well, jaedong's play anyway. I always read your articles and see all your pictures even though I don't always post, so it's not like I harbor any ill will toward you or think what you're doing is useless, I was really just confused by this one project and your astonishingly insecure approach to, well, looks like everything.

If it makes you happy, keep doing it. Don't make your happiness dependent on others' appreciation.

No, as far as I'm aware it's the first time. All their staff speak about as much English as I do Korean. Which is basic and it's often very hard for us to communicate specific things or feelings.

Thats unfortunate, have you thought about getting someone to translate for you so you can have a real conversation about this?
