basically, all points you want to patrol between must be hit with a patrol command. Originally I'm sure you guys are trying to patrol from A B C but only point B and C are "patrolled on to", so that's why you get BCBCBC. Some say it's impossible to tell a unit "patrol from A to B, then from B to C, C to A , then again from A to B etc..." , but... here's how you do it :
tell your unit to attack somewhere ( will be point A ) ; then, BEFORE it reaches that point :
press shift key, patrol + point B , shift patrol + point C etc...
after reaching point A , your unit will do the "multi patrol".
Maybe it won't win you any game, but it's pretty cool stuff ^^
edit : no need to use "attack" command, "move" will do.
It will attack move to A then patrol between B and C.
some use in a real game?? seems nice XD
uhhhh no. I just tried this, and all it does is attack move to A, then patrol to B, then to C, then B, then C, B, C, B,CBCBCBCBCBCBCB. it does not do ABCABCABC....... I think people would have figured this out by now if it actually worked -.-
csfield : why talk before trying ???
I tried it before posting, can you understand that ??? It does work.

Tested this out, and it does work, with practice it wouldn't hard to be particularly fast at it, but I'm skeptical of it's practicality- a scouting air unit would probably make the best use of this to check for expos, but apm would do the same thing, without the stops. Interesting nonetheless.
I'm sure this has already been noticed, but I wasn't aware of it.
caldo149 : cbcbcbcbcb.. is called patrolling from C to B, no need to write this...
you have to do EVERYTHING BEFORE your unit reached point A : is it too much for you ???
not much practical application to this even if it did work CABABACBACBACBACBACBAB
It may not be practical but at least the OP knew that. It's not going to win you any games but it's something cool to know ;D
Show some love.
I just tested it; it works absolutely fine.
good. Will use it on lings. Thanks! Op, don't talk rude, what the fuck give you the right to talk like that. Fear the ban hammer yo!
I just test it too; it does not work.
I did it exactly the way described in the OP.
The once the unit gets to A, it goes to B then C then continually patrols between B and C.
For those of you who say you got it to work, post replay?
this is kinda cool. could help with keeping track of expos with ovies obs ect
Wow this is something new I didn't know. Some situations this could be useful:
- Air units patrolling (against possible drops/recalls etc) especially in island maps. - 1 observer patrolling 3 or more expo sites. - Making your idle SCVs running around your mined out CC to mind fuck your opponent lol.

yay :D I'm glad that op posted it never the less. It's hard to make open posts, but in good time
brb i'll try it with drones + overlord...
Wow holy shit thanks Mzeg and evanthebouncy!, I always thought this couldn't be done, you have enlightened me!
It looks like the only limit to the number of locations you can patrol is the number of commands you can shift+queue.
Finally, something that I can use to detect that fcukin Arbiter's Recall.
Thanks.
It never ceases to amaze how you can still discover new things about such an old game.
OP, definitely add this to Liquipedia, and great work!
i wonder if koreans already know things like this already. they might be that far ahead of us
10 fucking years and only now do we learn how to patrol in a circle...
Wow. Any more secrets that need to be revealed about this game? Seriously, this is mind blowing that shit like this still hasn't been found yet.
Just tested, and it works. Nice discovery!
Idk, i tried it and it seemed to work fine, maybe you guys are doing it wrong?
awesome mzerg. i've been looking for something like this for a while. finally no more linear patrolling. perfect for expo hunting with observers. have it patrol between 3 or 4 expos with only 1 observer.

You can actually make it patrol in a 3 pointed L shape. Not necessary to make a path with only convex angles.
I tried patrolling 4 different locations and worked to make the ling move in a square, I see no reason why you couldn't add even more locations up to the unit queue limit.
Seems like a cool trick to do with one observer to scout for 3 expos at the same time.
Good to know there's another use for the waypoint function
the computers definitely like patrolling their overlords on paths around their bases, and I suppose it could be useful for mid-map observers/scourge?

More on this please. I bet you can shift-queue up to the limit (like 10 or so?). You could have a single unit (*cough*DTFTW*cough*) patrol every single expo on the map.

Hahaha, oh wow, just tested in SP, I had an observer going around the hole map, 9 jumps (if I counted correctly), over and over again.
This is coooooooooooooooooool.

Kind of a big jump the shift key to the p. Does the right shift key work for this? I know my right control key wont work for assigning control groups..

Right shift works 100%, that's what makes it so easy to do actually.
Woah I always thought that wasn't possible. Now I need to try it out.

TBH, I don't even think you'd notice it if they did.

oh shit the implications hahahah

Here's a rep where I have a couple observers floating around many expansions on a single patrol route, the one on the left side of python scouts all 7 bases on the bottom/left side of the map. I also send a few vultures on somewhat circular routes through the center.
I want to say this is extremely easy to perform and is actually useful in melee modes as a single observer or overlord is now not limited to straight back and forth paths and can be sent to cover much more ground. This improves scouting for sure.

I thought this was really neat and told my brother (UMS only player) and he said he's known about it for ages.

No but he's 10 years old so has a slightly different idea of "ages" :D

wow this is so cool
thanks mzerg

Holy shit, I'm going to teach this to every 2v2 partner I get from now on, and if we're winning, we'll just make our miners circle around the map while we hardcore micro vultures/mutas/bunkers/things that can't even move.

Because if he was, he'd obviously already been doing this for years.

Mzerg, I'm curious..where did you learn this?
wow this is really good. but more usefull for toss and zerg i think.

In fact... I did it by chance ; I sent some scourges ( attack ) , then told them to patrol afterwards ( I must have clicked several times ) : I saw the "multi patrol" but I didn't know how I had done that, and I didn't really care ; afterwards I wanted to know how it worked and I found it a few days later ^^ ( I knew I had used only "simple" commands )
Nice...thank god for your wasteful clicks lol.

this is definetly useful in real game to scout for enemy expos. Nice finding. Why did it have to take you 11 years since release to find out about this, though?
this is obvious stuff guys -_- when i play battleships on war3 i fucking pick trader and just patrol my way to mass gold then i feed my teamates and we win, or i just pick crusader and suicide their ass
TO JODOGOHOO : YEP! AND BLADEMASTER OWNS WISPS : SO WHAT ?

Nice! Great for overlords to make your opponent paranoid of drops! Used to be too much when the game go to a certain skill level to do that with my ovies.

This isn't war3, the mechanics are different

these threads makes me just wonder >_<

Uhm, you didn't know that??? It was like that forever... It's almost the same in every RTS...
