But I love D&D-based computer RPGs. Anyway, just wanted to say something about people who take the rules way too seriously. D&D 3rd edition is probably the most complex edition, and therefore a paradise for rule freaks. In D&D 4th edition, things have been simplified a lot in order to put the fun in the foreground again, and the rules in the background. You might want to check into that if your friend annoys you too much. ![]() Many gamers also have "house rules" which differ slightly from the original rules. If the majority of you doesn't like something, just handle it differently...

How much the rules comes into play is much more dependent on the campaign style than on the system being used. If the campaign keeps resorting to hack and slash combat or a lot of skill checks, the game will be rules-centric regardless of the system, because going back to the rules is just going to happen to keep the game going. The solution really isn't to change the rules, but to figure out a style thats more appropriate to what you want. For example, two of the more fun campaigns I've been a part of involved solving murder-mysteries and acting as a band of thugs for a politician.
