2 days ago, I was watching a VOD on youtube when suddenly my computer "went all crazy" and the screen started blinking, red pixels showed up all over the place and eventually crashed in the blue screen of death in about 15 seconds. I instantly restarted in safemode which worked fine, but since I am a total computer newb I had no idea what I should do in safemode so I just restarted again normally. Once again the desktop was totally fucked up with red pixels all over the place and I wasn't able to access anything (even the taskbar(is that what it's called?) on the bottom wasn't appearing). Strangely when I hit Ctrl-alt-delete that screen showed up fine, when i went to task manager and it went back to desktop with the task manager menu, it was fucked up again. I then turned off my desktop and had to go for a few hours.
When I got back my computer loaded up fine and windows gave me a notice saying there was a nvidia display problem. So I went to nvidia's site and downloaded the latest drivers for my GPU and the computer went fine as normal for 2 days. But last night right before I went to bed, the same thing happened. I turned it off and went to bed( I was about to do that anyway). Now whenever I turn on my computer, I have the same problems.
After a lot of google searching on my laptop(which I am using right now), I can't find much(I don't even know what to google). Usually all the results I get are threads made by people that start off with "whenever I load up WoW..." or "whenever I load up CS...". They also say that they have a lot of different colors showing up all over the place, not just red. I don't think it's a virus because of the inconsistency of it, and also all the threads I saw usually get replies saying that it's a GPU problem.
Does anyone know what might be my problem? I should note that my CPU has been really hot the last 5 months; it used to run just fine all the time, but now whenever I don't have the side panel of my tower off and a fan right next to it running on high, I can't run any games (even SC!) without it crashing. But even then it doesn't go through weird discoloration and blue screen of death, it's just the normal overheating problem of turning off suddenly.
I hate having to make a thread asking for help, but I don't really know what else to do. And all I know is when options are running thin, I can always turn to TL for help.

You might have fried your video card... events similar to these, but not exactly, happened to me after I fried mine. If there's any place around you that does computer diagnostics you should probably bring your comp there.

If you keep playing on it, it will gradually degrade. Believe, i had the exact same problem with my old relic of a computer that i was very reluctant to give up. It started out with pixels and artifacts, and eventually got to the point of giant orange lines going down the screen and the computer failing to boot. Just replace your GPU, it seems like the best idea.

your symptoms indicate that it's a hardware problem rather than a software related one. try out a spare graphics card if you have one, or ask a friend and check if the problem persists. as others have said before, looks like you have to buy a new graphics card (or send your current one in if you have warranty)

Yep, sounds very much like an overheated graphics card. If you are lucky, it isn't completely fried yet. Clean all fans in your computer and leave the case open. Maybe it's cool enough then and the GPU still works. Otherwise, looks like you'll need to buy a new graphics card.
