Now I got your attention, this is mostly a rant on Japanese temples lol, advice is at the very bottom

Japanese temples are stupid. Seriously. Japan is a country that is extremely good at rebuilding its shit (think about Hiroshima), almost all of their older buildings have fallen at least once, instead of planting trees or building something useful, they would reconstruct it and declare it as a world heritage site and attract hundreds of thousands of loser tourists from all around the world to take retarded pictures and post in their blogs. Now, this wouldn't be a problem if they were all in one place, but no, they are scattered all over Japan, and even Japanese people take their bullet train across their tiny island just to see a couple of reconstructions of supposedly famous buildings once built by random Shoguns/Buddhists/emperors.

There are essentially three types of buildings in Japan -- Castles (former residences of Shoguns), Shinto shrine (these really random structures erected at random places) and Buddhist temples.

Looks great right? Now, imagine if you see a hundred of them. They are seriously scattered across Japan (concentrated in Kyoto and Nara), and temples in Kyoto look just the same as temples in Asakura or Kamakura, except those are only an hour away from centre Tokyo.

Don't ever assume all the temples are different. They’re not. See a couple in Tokyo and be done with it. Seeing all temples in Japan is like trying more than one Starbucks and expecting McDonalds -- they are not different!

If you are planning on visiting Japan, don't go anywhere other than Tokyo, it's not worth it (unless you are a billionaire and have years to waste, even then...). Visit Asakusa and Kamakura for cultural stuff, visit Hakone for hot-spring and see mountain fuji, visit akihabara to see girls dressed in maid costumes, and spend the rest of your time in Roppongi/Shibuya, they are seriously the best part of town (for single guys under 30 anyway).

When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.

I agree, but Kyoto has value if you go during spring or autumn where the colors are on an entirely different level, and it's something you can never get in Tokyo.

I'd rather visit Japan to see "cultural" stuff in the country instead of getting lost in a city life I can have here. Former residences of Shoguns? Hell yeah.

Kamakura has lots of red leaves, and it's nothing special if you are from Canada lols.

But yea, Sakura is great, too bad I missed it

I'd attend an anime convention. Still, I wouldn't mind visiting those places.

Yea, I agree the rest of Japan outside of the major cities isn't that impressive. If you're into culture and stuff it's really cool but all the temples start to look the same and going 2 hours out of the way to look at a temple (other than the super famous ones, like the Golden Pavilion) it's not really worth it.

I wish I can enjoy some of the nightlife sometime though.

I'm looking forward to touring Japan later in life with my wife. I might even life there are few years as an Air Force doctor on one of the US bases there.

Here is a question for those who have been:

Is sushi in Japan better than sushi in the US? I would guess so, but then again, you can get some pretty dang fresh sushi in California and other places along the US coasts.

I love sushi and wanna know if it is better in Japan and what the price is roughly (more expensive, less expensive or what). Also, is it significantly different than what we have in the US?

Thx

In short, it's not on the same scale.

I've had sushi at Morimoto's (ex Iron Chef Japan and Iron Chef America) when I was in NYC, I'd expect it to be almost top if not top American sushi (I haven't had anything as good in NY).

Then I went to Japan... the quality is about a notch higher. Super market sushi tastes like sushi you would get from sushi restaurants in NA, sushi at regular restaurants (not sushi bars) are only slightly worse than high quality sushi in NA.

And then there are sushi restaurants... the prices run sky-high, but you can bet your ass that those are the finest sushi on earth. I've been to a couple of really good ones (most of them are in Tokyo, one in Kanazawa, a port city). The best sushi I've ever had was at Tsukiji, which is where the huge fish market is (I have a blog on it). Lined up for an hour and half outside of the sushi restaurant starting from 6:30... but the sushi was AMAZING, best thing I've ever had in my life.

The cost of sushi at tsukiji is much lower than ginza (similar quality) -- ginza being a couple of streets over, and I paid 3500 Yen for eight pieces, very cheap for the quality.

edit:

There are definitely more types of fish, but no rolls.
