This weeks pick is a wonderful piece that caught my eye as I was browsing for art. It stood out because of how original, captivating and beautiful it all felt. Reina captured the birth of, “The Queen of Blades” perfectly.
The brilliant use of the light engulfing its surroundings is stunning. It’s done in such an awesome way that it perched up Abathur into the rightful, “Creator of all things” position while faded into the background; that effect gives a perfect god like and ominous feel to Abathur as their new leader is coming forth into the universe.
What draws me in is how we see Kerrigan drawn with softer edges and looking less aggressive; casting her less of a monster and more of a beautiful creation.
One thing that I noticed, while searching for this weeks art, is that I did not encounter a single illustration with Abathur being involved with the creation of The Queen of Blades. Another reason why this stood out to me so much.
I contacted Reina for more answers as to how this art came to be:
Hi Reina! Chris here again! What’s the story behind this artwork? How did the idea for it come to be?
Hi! Well, I replayed SC1 and I have been reminded that Abathur isn’t mentioned at all in it. So, when Kerrigan emerges, you as a player don’t really think about who made her. So I thought, how about I draw her emerging from a cocoon, and Abathur lurking behind her like an unnamed creator. Thus, the green cocoon bursting. He’s basically observing what he made.
As we spoke a bit more I found out that her good friend Valentina helped her out when it came to the coloring. I asked how that process was like?
Basically what happened was I made the black and white drawing, she helped me fix the contrasts, and then block in colours. Since I’m not so good yet at going from b&w to colour, she showed me how to use Photoshop layer modes to achieve the result I wanted.
