It's been a long trek back to 1,000 MMR. I'm a lot more impressed by the internal cohesion at low rank HotS than DotA 2. Speaking from my perspective as a young game designer, I think DotA is moving in the right direction, although my experience with the original W3 release is limited.

Personally I think heavy support teams are seeing too much play at the 500-1,500 MMR level in lieu of the patches to Blade Mail. The new Jungle seems to heavily favor team compositions without much support, however, so as players adapt I wouldn't be surprised to see some stronger tri-lane compositions. I haven't had much opportunity to explore Alchemist in the new setting, but Brewmaster seems to have been overlooked in the talent trees while other heroes are doing well.

At low MMR having few supports or greedy supports is good since 2-3 cores aren't good enough to clear all the farm. As one climbs in MMR the cores get better and better leaving less room for the supports to farm. The supports also get better at zoning and ganking, making them more valuable. You pretty much always want 1 support that protects the most important core and one roaming ganking player that puts pressure on the opponent. The roaming player often farms a bit here and there.

I am not surprised you would see more cohesion in HotS since the game promotes it more than DotA does. In DotA you have objectives spread out and there is always something you can do solo and most kills or objectives only need 1 player if the opponent isn't contesting it, leading to a more split map.

The map in DotA is so much "bigger" - in travel time - than even the biggest HotS maps, that 5 man grouping too much is much less viable. Also at low MMR one good person can easily carry a whole team, basically regardless of their teammates, because unlike HotS your personal farming mechanics determine your character's power curve, not the team's ability to soak as a whole.

It is surprisingly not that different, but feels different because of game mechanics. You will be surprised how many players stay in lane when it only takes roughly 20 seconds to return to the base and TP back. There are a lot of small things in DotA2 that players are not doing right at low MMR, and probably the biggest one is not using fountain (relying on health % items)

those 20 seconds miss you a whole wave of last hits which is 250 gold and a lot of xp.

it is a brave move. i cannot really test such a thing. potions are very good on low health heroes, but at this stage in the game i am not sure of the suicide merit.
