Hi my TL friends,
It's me, Justine Chowder again!!!!! This time I'm trying to save SC2 and I have a great idea.
In my humble opinion the major flaw in SC2 is that it gets boring and bland and it's too slow and unexciting -- it's too predictable, just like chess
Who the hell watches chess?
We have to reference popular games like DotA/lol/hearthstone, which are all the rage these days.
My analysis of the fastest growing card game has shown that we can easily make it more interesting. I mean, surely there's a reason why it shoved MTG aside in record time and hence it should be our reference case. Obviously we can put minecraft aside because it is a different genre altogether.
Here are my proposed changes:
Terran Stim has 5% chance of killing the marine but also a 20% chance to give it 30% extra attack speed and movement speed.
Yamato cannon has a 20% chance to split into 2 cannons, , which also have a 20% chance to split into 2 more cannons, targeting random enemies. They cost 10 more mana
Salvaging bunkers returns 70% - 100% of it's cost
Raven missiles have a 15% chance to dud or hit an ally unit but deals a larger area of splash damage
Mules last for 40-80 seconds
Nuke has a larger radiation AoE, up to 30 radius, that deals no damage but gives bio units within the range a 50% chance to have a random (positive or negative) buff.
Protoss Warpgate warp in has 10% chance of killing the unit outright because of psionic interference - and a 10% chance to warp an additional random gateway unit of any tech.
Colossi have a 10% chance to get stuck between the cliffs*
Psi storm does 5-30 dps
Chrono boost costs 10 more mana but has a 5% chance to instantly complete the production of a building
The Cybernetics core has a new upgrade for Sentries, which when upgraded gives sentries a choice to cast a normal FF or a "Rocking FF" that cost 100 mana but gives it a 50% chance to spawn Rocking Destructible Rocks instead of forcefields. These Rocking Destructible Rocks are share the same characteristics as normal destructible rocks and have the same effect when destroyed (as stated in "Misc" below), except that they are skinnable. Players have to press the first hotkey for forcefield and the second hotkey to decide if it's a normal FF or the Rocking FF.**
After blink is researched, stalkers have a 30% chance to shoot an additional pair of laser beams when attacking, which will hit a random target nearby. When blinking they have a 10% chance to blink in the opposite direction.
*They are already imba so there's no need to balance that with a buff **Has a 10% chance to spawn as Rocking Destructible Debris.
Zerg Zergling cocoons have a 2% chance to spawn into an ultralisk but they cost 5 more minerals
Banelings have a 10% chance to detonate suddenly, damaging everything around it. It's movespeed is buffed by 20% in order to catch up with the speed buffed marines
Larva inject spawns 2-6 larvae
Cancelling a a morphing lurker/baneling/overseer/broodlord cocoon has a 16% chance to immediately turn into a Mutalisk The resources spent are returned, and the supply count will increase by 1. The Mutalisk will also gain certain upgrades that the unit had before being transformed. If it doesn't morph into a Mutalisk you will only get 75% of your resources back.
Misc There definitely needs to be some collectible skins. You get skins by getting achievements or winning tournaments or reaching a certain rank and you can trade it or win skins from your opponent.
When destructible rocks are destroyed random sized fragments are randomly scattered within an area the size of a nuke. The rock fragments damage units that are within the area in relation to the size.
I haven't got into the balancing stages yet but these are a few ideas I have in mind.
Let us save SC2 together by bringing it up to date. Do you have more ideas? Discuss.
Best,
Justine Chowder
Changelog 1.04: added effect for stalker and nuke Changelog 1.03: added upgrade for forcefield Changelog 1.02: added destructible rock feature Changelog 1.01: added muta lottery for zerg

5/5 great blog. You're lacking the fleeing zealot though, such a feature would make SC2's popularity go beyond anything imaginable.
|
I think if you had terran receive a 40% damage bonus against protoss, toss gain 40% damage against zerg, and zerg against terran it would also bring SC2 more in line with other premium Blizzard ESPORTS titles.
I think "morph random unit" would be a cool use for larva too. Maybe make it cost 75 minerals and whatever pops out pops out. Planning out builds is way overrated when you could just get a broodlord off of RNG.
|
well hearthstone is all RNG and is super popular so these ideas are genius, thanks Justine
|
|
Sounds terrible pretty much lol
|
Saving SC2 by changing it so much is like killing it. I'll hate the game you want to create.

how is it so hard for people to recognize satire? especially when he literally calls himself "Justine Chowder", an obvious bad play on "Dustin Browder" rofl

What if it's not a bad play but an alias, huh ?

All the RNG elements just allow for worse players to beat better players. They already accomplished that with the changes from BW to SC2.

You know what? I think brood war is not fun to play. Its graphics are rubbish and outdated, the clumsy unit movement is more a bug than a feature ("warcraft crew trying to create orcs in space accidentally creating a masterpiece") and it's totally not playable for casual users because you need ICCUP or similar for a solid user experience. Gosh.
|
Time to put your money where your mouth is. Where is that custom map/mod?
Where you are at it, can you also make a map/mod where every second a unit spawns randomly for both players a you can just watch two AIs fight each other?
|
0/5, no randomly appearing or exploding rocks were mentioned.

Justine, I agree! SCII has gotten too stale and these changes are brilliant! Please keep them coming. We need more! Also, please add more rocks^ Rocks make everything better!

in all honesty, i think your preposed changes would beat sc2 completely dead lol
|
I don't know why there aren't more rocks listed in these proposed changes, add rocks, those will help.

in 2015, a random typical UMS game on korean fish server gets filled up faster than you can say "Brood war is ded"

Gotta say I'm also upset about lack of Rocks.
Floating Rocks - floating rocks impeded the path fo air units and must be shot down. They then fall and become destructible ground rocks.
|
Sounds fantastic. Someone make this a mod like Starbow.
Can't wait for 6pool Ultras.

This thread is ridiculous. JeiXian you're a hot, sexy, satirical mess.

and I can't actually confirm you are hot and/or sexy. You are satirical as shit though. And I like that

Someone needs to add the Giant-Muta-That-Shoots-Muta from the old SCII WoL Pro-mod. Best unit concept 10/10.

hahahahahahahahahaha thank you everyone
Asm you reminded me of something and I've added it to the log

As a responsible game designer, I cannot do that because I have to ensure my game is balanced, as much as I think Protoss is overpowered currently.
After all, balance is crucial to saving SC2.

Justine Chowder

The idea of floating rocks sounds interesting. Destroy them to crush the units underneath.
|
I'd pay good ESPORTS money to see these suggestions get made into an extension mod, and even more money to see a tournament with the extension mod.
|
I can't find the video now, but a while ago there were some casual smash bros players who said that tournaments should have random items on because if players were actually good they'd adjust to the randomness and overcome it. It was horrible and they were wrong and ignorant in every regard, and this kind of remind me of that. I had a good laugh OP.

Thank you for the suggestions, but your proposed ideas were too deterministic and the idea of floating rocks defies physics - we don't want people laughing at our game do we?
That said, I have been inspired by them and added you to the acknowledgement list.

Thank you for the support my friend. We can always crowd source the money to hire developers and give them free skins. (I'm more of the visionarist than a coder)

We should stick together instead of bashing each other my friend. Do not let them divide and conquer us.

And what a visionarist you are ! With you as head of sc2 design, I'm sure sc2 would be superior to all games & sports forever and ever.
Also, now that it has a rock suggestion, I can finally give 5/5.
|
ZvZ would be so fun.
So he is gearing for an attack and... ok my baneling exploded. GG.
Also you should add skins for rocks. And nukes should spawn diffrent mutated hostile criters defined by what the nukes killed. For exemple if you nuke a group of marines, it could spawn marines with 4arms, that could carry 2weapons. I want also a new spell that can melt a group of units and transforms it to another one. Then of course. Carriers should shoot void rays/oracles/phenix instead of interceptor. For the price of an interceptor of course
This also lack the roachydra
|
Should totally implement a real money auction house where you can buy random packs of destructible rock skins with a chance of hitting legendary INDESTRUCTIBLE ROCKS.
|
Really great update with the rocks! One thing I'm upset about since LotV was announced was the lack of LazorZ added to the Protoss race. Could you do something about that one? For example, Stalkers have a 10% chance to shoot a third lazor beam when attacking, inflicting 2d8+4 extra damage but also a 10% chance to randomly blink in the wrong direction.
Also Protoss severely lacks free units. Would be cool if you found a way to repair that.
|
I swear to God this is a troll, cause if you think this is slow then you haven't watched a single match. Granted the beginning is normally a bit slow but so is LoL.

Don't forget Stealth Rock, always gotta get those rocks up, make flying units take 25% hp for flying over them

Another heart warming post. I support all the changes!

I didn't really read the op fully, but are they suggesting that the reason why a game is successful or exciting or even fun to play is the random element? So that the true winners are really on the long game, playing the best odds every time, but still losing to noobs via pure luck occasionally?
That is how poker works, or any card game for that matter. And that can also apply to many games, including physical sports.
I wonder if the new wave of RTS will have to do something like this in order to kick the tried and true method of trying to achieve pure balance via unequal races and maps. And if something like that would be fun or even work.
I mean in BW we did have more random elements and bugs in the game, that made it always new and interesting. (50% miss on highground, glitches with stacking, tricks for doing things in game and with map makers, etc).
Maybe the problem with SC2 is that it's TOO clean.
|
Someone should make a map like this for the shoutcraft clanwars

My friend, as I said earlier, the problem with SC2 is that it's TOO predictable.
Armies traveling in death balls like a dung beetle rolling up shit is anything but "clean".
And if something like that would be fun or even work.
You don't even need to talk about poker or gambling card games. "Something like that" worked for DotA/LoL and hearthstone : The most popular games atm, based on a credible source -> DH. Even WC3 had small parts of this element, with crits and item drops.
Best,
Justine Chowder

Cancelling a a morphing lurker/baneling/overseer/broodlord cocoon has a 16% chance to immediately turn into a Mutalisk nice bw reference.

Appreciated suggestions, but I doubt this will make SC2 more interesting. Warcraft III has RNG, interesting hero, spell and item system, but it is still dead.

If these were real, I wonder what IdrA would think about these changes.
