and I have been a fan of e-sports for many years now.
I started playing online games when I was 11 with World of Warcraft, and the flame for online and competition sparked from day one (all those years ago). I sound like an old man, but I'm only 21.
Anyway, I wanted to talk about something a little different. We all know the story of the kid who got in to games, believed in himself/herself, got in to the scene, became a legend in his/her own right. We also know the story of the lurkers who just enjoy games for the damn enjoyment. No, this is not what I want to talk about, what I want to talk about is the people outside of the scene.
I come from a family of professors and artists, father is an Art History professor, both older sisters are artists, mother is a Mass Communications professor but has been in the art world for nearly 3 decades. My girlfriend who I'm very close with and live with is an art student, as well as my other roommates and friends. Of the close group of friends, one person has played the campaign of StarCraft, others have played some games, but no one really is passionate.
I'm the passionate one. So I think here in a lot of these stories it turns in to this, I have kept my passion hidden because of XYZ. I want to debunk that idea.
I am a LOUD MOTHER FUCKER. I make my opinions known and let people know what I am in to. Because of it, I have never garnered resistance from friends or family alike. More often than not it is apathy, neither support nor adversely against my passion of esports. My biggest supporter is my girlfriend, she is constantly on my ass for not researching enough, not creating enough content, and not making my presence in the scene made. She was ecstatic when I told her I started publishing reporting at + Show Spoiler +
www.gamerscoverage.org
and has gotten into a habit of asking if I've posted a new video at + Show Spoiler +
So you're thinking "yay, great this ass hole has a nice girlfriend." Well, yes I guess that's true, but it is far from the point.
I question you now to think about if you have seen the World of Warcraft movie, "Race to World First". The idea of the documentary was to talk about the top tier raiding guilds, however it rapidly declined into an hour long promo of American guild Blood Legion... My personal opinions aside, and whether you are even a fan of Warcraft aside, I noticed something.. heartbreaking.
One of the members of the guild was so ashamed of what he did, that he kept his computer in his closet - a world contender mind you. He never told his friends in high school, college or grad school, and I'm not sure his mother (who he is close with) knew either. Eventually with the help of the documentary he was able to tell a few of his closest friends, who understandably were shocked. But I think they were more shocked that their he was unable to disclose such an important part of his life.
I get very long winded when it comes to words, so let me try to wrap this up.
You should be very proud of the things you do, and the things you care about. If you are a young player who is telling yourself that you're going to be the next number 1, I think you should tell your friends and family (insert other example of sports, music, art here). Firstly (even if you're 30) your family should know what's going on, because hopefully they care. Secondly and more importantly, if you are passionate about something, and someone else ridicules you for it, THEY SHOULD NOT BE A PART OF YOUR LIFE.
You go to a party, some dude offers you a joint, you say you don't smoke and he laughs at you. Walk the fuck away because that dude doesn't need to be your friend. The guy who says "ah right on, I got some beer if you drink" is the guy that should be your friend. The girl that says "ohh i love guitar" instead of "i bet your bad" when you tell her you picked up guitar, is the girl who should be your friend. I feel like this can be applied to just about everything in life.
TL;DR If you are passionate about something - anything - you should own it, and the people who don't support you are not people who need to be in your life.

Finally, a loud motherfucker who makes his opinions known. We need more people like you around here, because LORD KNOWS WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH OF THEM ALREADY.

That's exactly what I was thinking. What are you, a mind-reader? But I guess it's far from the point, which is that you're so passionate about esports that you need someone to remind you to be involved in creating content or something.

That last paragraph really didn't transition into this one well, but I'd rather jam an icicle into my left butt cheek than watch a WoW movie.

Sounds like his computer might just be gay and isn't willing to share it with its computer-family and computer-friends.

Yeah, you really went crazy with these 800 words. I don't know what you were thinking.
You should be very proud of the things you do,
Unless it's heroin
and the things you care about.
So if I tell my family that my life goal is to become the world's number-one Sims 3 player, and they aren't 100% committed to accepting that goal, which could just be a wild impulse generated by my developing adolescent mind, I should cut them off from my life? Okay.
You go to a party, some dude offers you a joint, you say you don't smoke and he laughs at you. Walk the fuck away because that dude doesn't need to be your friend. The guy who says "ah right on, I got some beer if you drink" is the guy that should be your friend. He probably laughed because you were turning down free weed. But anyhow, just because someone kisses your ass doesn't mean they'll make good friends. On the flip side, if someone berates you, it could be an attempt at humor, or they could be having a bad day. Even if their comment is genuine, and they're legitimately ready to place money on you being objectively bad at the guitar, that alone seems kind of interesting, and they still might to turn out to be someone you could make friends with.
TL;DR If you are passionate about something - anything - you should own it, and the people who don't support you are not people who need to be in your life.
Guh, you don't need to write "TLDR". If people are too lazy to read a few paragraphs, then the "TL;DR" version isn't going to help them at all.
1. Yes you are correct, the thousands of people that read articles, watch streams and never even speak their name are very loud.
2. I'm sorry no you can't relate
3. I actually know what you mean, it was a pretty horrendous movie that turned in to a lot of self promo. I was genuinely interested in looking at the real life of players at the top tiers but it became very uninteresting and hard to sit through the 50 minutes. Worked good for wasting some time while sitting at work however.
4. Why is it a problem if his computer is gay?
5. Sorry 800 words was too much, I like to get my points across after about 3000 =D
6. You're talking to a recovering drug addict homeslice, so the "unless it's heroin" comment is kinda falling of deaf ears
7. You seem to be taking the word ridicule to meaning not supporting just the slightest amount below 100%, not sure where you are getting that.
8. Again, drug addict, I really don't agree with the laughing for turning down free weed. Yeah, jokes are likely, but I think if you actually thought about what I was trying to say you would have realized I was talking about people who will honestly look down upon you for what you believe in. Not harmless jokes.
That dude who kept his computer in the closet was hilarious. If I remember correctly he was pretty much the only person from that guild in that doc who really had his shit together outside of WoW. Being in a world first wow guild is not that impressive of an accomplishment, but doing it while also successfully passing the bar exam is pretty sweet.

You're right. TL is like 99.9% introverted nerds who use 9-point font because we're too scared to write in normal font.
2. I'm sorry no you can't relate
I'm sorry that you're sorry.

Ok.
4. Why is it a problem if his computer is gay?
"If a CPU inserteth its USB cable into another CPU as it would a speaker or keyboard, this is an abomination, and thy CPU shalt be cast off a cliff."
~ Gospel of Bill Gates, 3:14
Sin.
5. Sorry 800 words was too much, I like to get my points across after about 3000 =D
Actually, you only wrote about 500 before saying "Let's wrap this up".
6. You're talking to a recovering drug addict homeslice, so the "unless it's heroin" comment is kinda falling of deaf ears
Then substitute "heroin" with "Chopping people up in your basement".
7. You seem to be taking the word ridicule to meaning not supporting just the slightest amount below 100%, not sure where you are getting that.
Sometimes, people have stupid dreams, like, "When I grow up, I want to invent ice cream!" and need some debilitating ridicule in their lives. :D

You're taking this way too literally. It doesn't matter if you did drugs in the past, the guy is still going to laugh if you pass up free weed. Plus, weed isn't a drug. It's an herb, man.
9. TLDR idc
I know you probably wouldn't care, not even enough to write a retor... oh.

I hoped you would have gotten the joke in the whole response...
I also say that you translate the gospel too literally. Our proliferator and Gates to heaven merely set upon us guidelines as to which we may represent our lives. Taking his words as to represent how we must conduct our technical world is against his wishes. We he set upon us all those decades ago, he recognized that his teachings would allow us to grow and adapt at a must more rapid pace, meaning that many ideas would become outdated or even irrelevant.

I don't have a good sense of humor, so that's why I missed it.

When you read the Holy Microsoft Word, it's not just "guidelines". If you are read "Ye are never to deleteth explorer.exe, lest ye plunge your OS into ever-lasting darkness" (Book of Jobs, 4:20) then it seems pretty clear when he says "NEVER" that there is no wiggle room.

See this is my point here. You can pick and choose Readings from the Gates, Jobs, Wozniak and other books to pontificate about how it is rigid. Yet you can take readings such as "Never trusteth unto you a computer as to which you can not throw out a window" (Book of Dos 2:21). This particular prophet did not literally mean if it can't be thrown out a window it can't be trusted, he merely means our control and adaptability towards the idea must be well developed.
You see, I think there are several readings that are rigid - as you pointed out Jobs, 4:20, however there are plenty other FULL books that can be interpreted for equal or greater effect.
where is the part about "go out and hug trees"? I really missed that part.
Also, your blog was a total eye opener. At first I was kind of ashamed to share with my friends, family or the colleagues from liquipedia that I'm into torturing small creatures in my basement. Only lately I decided to come out of the closet, so to speak (that's only an analogy, because my closet is filled with bones, internal organs and other memorabilia). I'm feeling a lot less stressed now.
