Sounds cool. Reminds me of a more driving version of some Elias Viljanen stuff.
What are your major influences?

Jeff Loomis for this track, but I listen to a lot of Allan Holdsworth, Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, DispersE, Periphery, basically anything progressive that's interesting

Oh fuck, I LOVE Jeff Loomis. All of the Nevermore guitar work is PHENOMENAL, not to mention his solo work on Zero Phase Order and Plains of Obilivion.

Good stuff there. What about Animals as Leaders, CHON and Cloudkicker?

I saw Animals As Leaders recently here in Melbourne love Tosin, Cloudkicker, Chimp Spanner, Tesseract and every band in that scene very much.

Personally, I don't really like that style of music. This music doesn't really transport emotions, it's more about showing impressive techniques. I guess you've practiced many many years to get this good, and I really respect everyone who can play an instrument that well. I still prefer musicians who are able to combine their instrumental mastership with more emotional songwriting. (like Rory Gallagher or Omar Rodriguez-Lopez)

There's some lead work that's more based on feel near the end of the tune, but I get what you mean. This particular tune really was meant more as a "show off" style song though, I hope to explore many styles and ideas throughout the album

Not quite my style. Why is it called virtuoso album?
|
Cool stuff. I think it could use a bass guitar though to fatten up the overall sound. I don't listen to much modern metal, so I don't know what I'm talking about entirely, but I'm thinking of The Sword and Down as bands that have swampy bass sounds that would make this track hit harder.
Really nice guitar playing.
|
There is a bass there, but since I can only play it like a guitar I mixed it in a more subtle way, basically just to fatten the rhythm sound. It'll be more obvious in other songs though where the bass will be more crucial
I just used the word virtuoso to describe the genre and my goal with it. There'll be funk, blues, jazz, etc. songs and plenty of modal fusion type playing so it seemed fitting.
